I like that it's more isolated from the rest of lemmy, the vibe is just different in those comms and I have to imagine it's related to not constantly having people rolling up to sealion about reactionary/anticommunist shit. I do still like to interact with the rest of lemmy at the same time, which is why I'm pretty happy on .ml.

I'm trans, and like actually hate these people, they deserve ridicule. However, if I'm willing to tolerate bigotry on my behalf towards people that are in some out-group, there's no guarantee that some day I won't be among that out-group and subsequently targeted by that type of bigotry. Do you understand the issue I'm raising?
I can't tolerate people misgendering Caitlen Jenner or Blair white because while they suck, it only contributes to an environment where that type of insult is then considered acceptable.
I appreciate the clarifying question, I actually have an Iranian friend that explained to me that in Farsi, that the slogan 'Marg Bar Ameriki' or 'Death to America' (farsi does not contain 'down with xyz' in it, 'death to xyz' is the linguistic equivalent), it's is not commonly intended as a literal death threat, but an expression of political opposition, or opposition to a state of affairs.
One might say 'death to traffic' for example, that doesn't mean you want to literally kill everyone blocking your car or whatever, it's more a statement of exasperation and opposition. As a political slogan it isn't intending to mean death to Americans, but to the American government. It does sounds edgy in an english translation though.
To your question, 'white' is not a race, it's more a self-identification and class signifier. Non-white ethnicities (Irish, Italians, etc) have a long history of assimilating as 'white' by becoming cops, landlords, and other active participants in American settlement/ westward expansion. That's not to say there aren't poor people who also identify as white, but if they are ever going to really have solidarity with other nonwhite people they really need to kill that white settler in their head.
I read 'death to whites' in this context as a poster complaining about, and expressing opposition to the bias in narratives/social media platforms - the thread was originally someone venting about racist comments on reddit, and white lemmmy users felt the need to get defensive about the most surface level reading.
For reference I said 'death to america' just the other day in a reply to a post about how florida prisons are going to be forcibly detransitioning prisoners, because it's a fucked up situation and at this point I don't see a way to really fix the bigger problems at play without some fundamental changes to what 'America' is.

The display names option does limit your actual name length combined with pronouns, hexbear it's a separate field. I do appreciate the arguments against having it mandatory/integrated into the main lemmy. Here's the github post about it, the lemmy.ml admins agree with your line.
That said, on hexbear I see plenty of people keep none/use name and they've also got specifically agender ones like null/void, undecided, any.
There's still plenty of instances run by people willing to tolerate misogyny, racism and transphobia in the name of extreme centrism and defending capitalism.

Anyone on the train on LGBT rights being 'western decadence' or imposing over other cultures has actually internalized the (misogynist, homophobic, transphobic) social order imposed by western colonization and industrial-era "westernization" is the natural/traditional way of things. Westernization for many colonized countries meant importing or reinforcing a more misogynist order as that kind of hierarchy was more compliant with capital.

I have a lot of experience (too much tbh) with people that position as communists or revolutionaries, but still have conservative brain worms about gay/trans people. Some will self crit when confronted about it, others take the criticism like a personal attack and double down on bigotry.
That response is where the key difference is between someone that's principled but uninformed and someone who's just a 'patriotic' socialist leaking brainworms.
The instances routinely smeared as 'rife with tankies' have generally been the best about actually consistently enforcing rules against bigotry on Lemmy, and in the case of hexbear have been pretty ahead of the curve when it comes to trans inclusion at least from my experience. I only thought to start including pronoun tags in my display name because I liked seeing how normalized it was in their comms.
fwiw I'm a trans woman and I think that it's still bigotry even if the target is a shitty person. Come up with a more creative insult, it's not hard to mock shitty people for being shitty without being misogynistic or transphobic.

I do hope the support for community/server specific flairs gets some traction, it seems like it would actually have a pretty broad appeal and could be used for pronouns in addition to other things.
