And this is where unregulated capitalism and the constant craze for GROWTH GROWTH GROWTH comes into the picture. With a failing demographic AND an aging society, economic collapse is inevitable. I mean, it could be just a long, smooth slope in theory, but not with this dystopian economic system where you have already spent the money you're getting back in 10 years' time, with the greedy shareholders dictating everything.
I mean, these demographic changes will happen regardless, but the effects of currently having such a flawed and short sighted system will be painfully drastic.
I was gifted Robert Merle's The Day of the Dolphin once. They told me it was a great book. I'm still sure it is, but I couldn't get past the 2nd page. The lack of punctuation made it awfully cumbersome to read.
I remember having played it on Ubuntu around S3-S4. It didn't look the exact same, but it was definitely playable (could have been just different graphics settings). A few weeks ago I found a comment saying it's not playable and/or buggy as hell now. I wonder what broke it.
As long as it's single player or you're lucky to not want to play League, PUBG, CS2 or Valorant (or RS6 or... basically any of the biggest ones), you should be fine, and there are plenty of games working under Linux.
If you do... Well, not now or in the past 20 years.
There are applications that still don't have a proper Linux port, or any at all. Or maybe the ones that exist are cumbersome to use. I really hate that people downvote you for pointing this out. If you were wrong, Linux would have a much larger share already.
I understand that some people have alternatives for everything they use; I'm happy for them, and I wish to be them. But assuming that if I can do everything I want on Linux in the same quality/convenience/whatever, then others must, as well...
Windows, of course, that's out of the question. And yes, the problem wouldn't be as annoying if proper corporate solutions were developed for Linux, as well - which is an investment, and they look at the proportions between the two, and choose the one with the larger user base. Which sucks as well, because the Linux user base is small exactly for the above reason (among others).
Again, I'm not debating the whole issue at all - I just didn't find the initial comparison fair, that's all.
While it does feel like that from a Windows user's perspective, you're comparing running Windows executables on Windows with running Windows executables on Linux - no wonder it's not as simple on Linux. Do you know what else is not that simple? Running Linux executables on Windows. In order to do that, you have to...
Apart from the problem of my friends sticking with the same games I play regardless of my decision, the other problem is... yes, most people usually play the games that most people play. I also happen to be in that (high) percentage, so there's not much room.
BTW I've been playing League for a long time, and while cheaters have been a thing for a while, in my experience it practically became a nonexistent problem recently. It doesn't prove anything, just saying that League isn't in the 'cheaters all over' category anymore (imho).
Thankfully, Rocket League is actually pretty decent in this regard, so that's a "safe" one - but there's several more that still necessitates Windows, so I don't see the point of going back and forth in dual boot every time I switch games.
I wish it was that simple... though I do like my games enough that it's a pretty unpleasant choice either way, my friends who play also refuse to change games just for my sake, and they don't mind using Windows. Therefore I can basically stop playing with them, or stick with this rubbish.
I couldn't find it in the linked article either, but unfortunately it's less jokey, as in, the vocalist that also sang this song passed away tragically early in 2011, and apart from the systemic corruption, it was also made as a tribute to him.
...which is a completely valid point if you don't mind not playing those games. But if you do want to play them (for example because back when you got to love them, they didn't have this), you have yourself a dilemma.
Unless you want to play against a shitload of cheaters every day (ruining the fun whenever you have 30 minutes to wind down), your game should have a decent enough AC to detect when someone loads a cheat, including the lowest level. And guess who doesn't have a problem with 3rd party programs accessing ring 0.
So there you have it, you either stop playing all multiplayer games (not even just competitive ones!) entirely, or stick with Windows and all the awful things that come with it. I've been wanting to switch to Linux for the past 20 years, have been playing various multiplayer games over the past 2 decades, and it was always either the AC or just the sheer incompatibility (especially in the earlier years). There was even a time when people could happily cheat on Linux and get away with it in Counter-Strike: Source, because VAC simply didn't work on Linux.
Thanks for the clarification. So it's probably the first point.
I know about blocking communities, and probably will do - I just feel that blocking a community is a bit overkill, especially if otherwise I don't mind seeing posts from them, just not that many. Also, if I want Lemmy to grow, prematurely blocking communities before things could get traction seems somewhat conterintuitive to me. I also use the Subscribed feature when I get bored of random/spammy content, but my curse is that I'm interested in niche, slow communities, so I can choose between these two.
It's alright, the rest of my problem is not relevant here anyway, and you answered my question, so thanks a lot!
Not just counting, but sometimes I might say a word or a phrase in another language because I find it sounds humorous in the moment. Poor Italian gets ridiculed the most 🤌🤌.
