  • The command line is always going to turn people away from Linux. I've only had to use the command line to fix a windows issue once in the past 10 years while I regularly have to use it every time I have to work with Linux.

People like convenience and will almost always go with the more convenient option even if it's not the best option.

Until the majority of issues can be solved using point and click (and help forums show that method over command line), Linux will always lag behind Mac and Windows.

  • Exactly this. Most people care about convenience above all else. People want their software to "just work" without having to fiddle with settings or add-ons or anything else.

  • I hate how adverse so many democrats are to actually getting out to vote. I've voted in every election I was eligible to vote in yetso many of my peers will casually shrug their shoulders and say they didn't feel like getting out.

  • The Bullet That Missed by Richard Osman

  • I regularly rewatch Star Trek, primarily TNG and Enterprise with the occasional DS9 or TOS episode.

  • My thoughts as well. Telekinesis seems cool but 3 & 4 are a perfect combo to a great life.

  • For communities, I feel like a good solution would be to let mods link similar communities from different instances together, sorta like an automatic cross post.

  • It's been too long so I don't remember but there were several things I tried to install that required me to add a new repository, install from that, and then fiddle around with config files to get it to work.

Lots of people swear that Linux is easy but that's never been my experience. It's always command prompts and config files.

It's been years since I last used Linux so maybe things have gotten better. I'll likely be finding out eventually when Win 10 EOL comes because I don't want Win 11.

  • With all the problems lemmy.world has been having, I've been using the opportunity to test out kbin as well.

Hopefully the Lemmy devs will be able to sort out all the problems.

  • I've used both regularly for years and went back to Windows when I switched to PC gaming and it's just so much better. Everything just works on Windows.

Linux really needs to work on improving its user experience if it wants to be a true competitor to Mac and Windows. All these little config tweaks and command line prompts you have to do to get things working on Linux just isn't going to win a bunch of people over who are used to things being a few clicks on a wizard to get working.

Edit: it's been years since I last tried Linux so maybe things have changed.

  • I still use it. The HFY community is still on Reddit and I enjoy reading the stories.

The API changes haven't really affected my experience since I always browsed Reddit on my desktop through the browser.

  • There's going to be lots of those on Reddit with so many people deleting their past posts/comments.

  • It's not necessary. OP is most likely testing the various apps to see which one he prefers.

  • I'll get randomly logged out and then it won't let me log back in.

  • They're probably leaving due to all the problems this instance has been having. I've only just recently been able to log back in after several days of it just refusing to let me in. Although I'm not sure if it's an instance issue or a Lemmy issue since mastodon.world has been working just fine with no issues.

  • That always messed me up in Spanish class. Trying to remember the gender of objects so the rest of the sentence could be gendered properly.

  • I figure out what I was doing wrong. I was tapping on the picture which was taking me to the original URL (which was on lemmy.ml) instead of opening it up through lemmy.world.

Now I just have to figure out why I can't see your comment through Connect. I see the comment in my inbox and when I select it I get taken to this post but I don't see this comment or any of the comments in the chain starting with my original comment. I had to post this reply through the web browser.

  • We've really entered the Twilight Zone. I'm rooting for The Zuck to win this battle and I'm rooting for Disney in Florida.

  • Hmmm. I must be doing something wrong then. I've only been using the app for a couple of minutes so I'll have to keep playing with it.
