  • I agree I’d rather Trump shit the bed hard and early so we can contain the damage and show the public at large what his policies will really do to them.

But Tariffs will never be enough to offset income tax completely. I think he is going to use Tariffs to offset renewing his tax cuts for the wealthy. There are a good number of house republicans who will not go along with tax cuts if it increases the deficit. Revenue from tariffs would give him enough cover to placate those Republicans while directly pushing the cost onto US consumers who are primarily lower and middle classes.

Even after 4 years when he is out of office and the next administration reduces those tariffs and goes back to a progressive tax system. Even reducing those tariffs then will never bring prices down. Companies will never pass those savings entirely to the consumer they will pocket the money and everyone else will be screwed.

  • I agree, I doubt very much that price savings for any reduction in Tariffs will be passed onto the consumer. However any increase in Tariffs will immediately be felt.

I’d rather see an increase in a single sector such as microchips to show the public the costs of Trump’s plan in real modern dollars to help build opposition. Than wait until he pushes an across the board Tariff. Which would likely result in a stagflation for the population at large.

  • Trump is going to use Tariffs to try to offset making larger tax cuts for the wealthy.

It’s better that he does this now so that we have a solid recent example to point to of how this will impact what we pay for goods.

Never mind we have 100 years of data backing this up, people are idiots and won’t recognize the treat until it hurts them directly.

  • Stop buying his shitty cars. If his Tesla stock tanks the rest of his empire will crumble.

The US won’t let Space X go under. They will nationalize it and let current management run it. But the rest of his business ventures will go under without Tesla propping them up.

  • Elite centrists have dominated the Democratic party since Clinton. They love to take a “responsible” center left position and try to grab centrists. Unions, minorities and people on the left have no recourse but to continue to vote for them because the Republicans were soo much worse.

Trump’s super power has always been his ability to say anything it takes to get votes yet deliver very little. Because of this he can say appealing things to unions and minorities who have been disenfranchised which undermines Democrats.

The generation of boomers who have lead the Democratic Party since Clinton is literally dying out. These next few election cycles are going to be interesting as the next generation of Xers and Millennials have a different opinion of government and are much more militant and vocal.

  • Yeah no, Europe is toast. For most of the continent the demographics are terminal. In the US we have a large Millennial and gen Z population that can replace the boomers. Europe doesn’t have that.

People between the ages of 25 to 45 power the economy through consumption because they are trying to establish households and families. They do not have enough young people to support their own industries. Much like China they need export markets like the US where consumption is strong to stay afloat. The US is the only rich market that will be consumption driven for the next 20 or 30 years before our it’s demographics begin to fail.

However, Trump is all bluster, he will back down if he can score some kind of win even if it is small. He can’t start trade wars with most of the world’s major economies without inciting rampant inflation in the US. That’s why he didn’t implement his tariffs on day one of his presidency like he promised. Ignore him or give him something small and he will go away.

Stop giving him attention and taking his words seriously. He is just trying to dominate the news cycle.

  • No one can predict the future but Ukraine has caught Russia unprepared by rushing small but well equipped units to the front to take land during the Kursk offensive and then rush reinforcements in afterwards.

It’s not out of the realm of possibility for Russia to do the same in the Baltics.

  • The 14th amendment is very clear on this, and has been upheld by the Supreme Court on many occasions.

Unless you are the child of a a diplomat or an invading soldier you are awarded citizenship if you are born under the jurisdiction of a state I.E. US soil. Illegal immigrants are still under US jurisdiction and their children are awarded citizenship as a result.

  • Republicans are not a monolithic entity.

There are people like Mitch McConnell, Mitt Romney and Megan McCain who are all right wing Dbags but see Trump for what he is. Aside from the tech bros like Elon Musk there are those in the business community that do not support Trump because they don’t have a seat at the table.

They failed just as much as Biden and the Democrats did to stop this.

  • NATO is not a monolithic defense shield. There are weak points that Russia can go after.

The Baltics are made up of very small nations that Russia even in its current state could roll through in a few days.

Once they take those countries they can just sit on them and declare that they will use nukes to defend them.

That leaves NATO in a very bad position militarily of having to retake those countries with the very real threat of nuclear war. It will test the resolve of Alliance members especially those who aren’t immediately adjacent to Russia and are not threatened by them militarily. Will they risk the lives of their people?

Combine that action with China trying to take Taiwan and a US that is not very reliable under Trump and it’s not nearly as cut and dry as you think it may be.

  • I apologize, I stopped reading about halfway through your post.

A lot of the call outs in this thread to delete your social media go outside and touch grass are spot on. You’re way too deep in social media and the 24hr news cycle.

I work in an industry that is very much conservative. Even the devoted MAGA people I meet are generally very nice if you speak with them outside of politics. A handful of the ones that seek out and want to talk politics (which is rare) are calm and I usually can get them to acknowledge the shortcomings of Trump when I start questioning the inconsistencies of his policies.

Our politics have grown courser and more extreme because of social media and the news cycle. The MAGA politicians of the Republican party take extreme positions to get attention. Moderation is ignored because it doesn’t grab headlines.

Yes Republican policies and very bad for our nation. But it doesn’t mean common citizens share those views. Usually it is much more nuanced.

I wouldn’t trust many of the mods to be impartial arbitrators of what information is false and what isn’t.
