  • I was gonna comment on the items but realized that Buzzfeed just listed out the things people on Reddit said to some random's question, and didn't even fix the typos.

  • I don't know if this is naughty but I use bind mounts for everything, and docker compose to keep it all together.

You can map directories or even individual files to directories/files on the host computer.

Normally I make a directory for the service then map all volumes inside a ./data directory or something like that. But you could easily bind to different directories. For example for photoprism I mount my photos from a data drive for it to access, mount the main data/database to a directory that gets backed up, and mount the cache to a directory that doesn't get backed up.

  • By viewing the Local feed you can see all posts across the instance, and posts are almost always posted in the main NZ or NZ Politics communities, each of which are reasonably active.

What's the outcome we would be aiming for by doing this?

  • How's my day going? Well I toasted a hot cross bun, took it out of the toaster and put it on the hot cross bun bag, and the plastic bag melted to my hot cross bun so thoroughly that I just have to throw it away. That's how my day is going 🫠

  • It's great you found just what you wanted!

  • I'm not sure Lemmy has released anything since 1 Jan 2024. And I don't think C/NZ can submit a Motorhead song since they aren't from NZ.

  • It might be because it's late but I don't think I'm following. Watercare gave 24 hours notice that developments without resource consent would not be allowed to connect until 2031. But also they have capacity for 4,000 more houses, "Our current tracking of previous years - there's typically 800 connections made a year, so that's five years of connections available.".

So they have 5 years worth of connection capacity but they aren't allowing any new developments to connect? I'm really lost on what Watercare is trying to convey.

  • Sorry @eagleeyedtiger@lemmy.nz @liv@lemmy.nz I completely forgot about this. Gotta get it in by the end of the month, so I'll get a survey set up with your guys suggestions and get our entry in 🙂

  • I definitely think you're right that if your organisation doesn't make privacy an important thing then you get blind to it. I've worked at a lot of places over the years and have seen vastly different attitudes to this.

  • Even if the agency was well funded and well managed, I can't imagine working there is good for your mental health.

  • This is crazy but it does seem like this is a result of an underfunded agency. Doubly so when the staff are "too busy to think about privacy".

I hope this is not used as justification to cut funding or disestablish the agency when the opposite is needed. Most of these issues have technology solutions that could be implemented with some investment.

  • Rumor has it that it exploded.

  • Haha I knew what this was even before I clicked 😆

  • This reminds me of a toy one of my kids got given from my mum.

Apparently it was a giraffe. A giraffe without the one defining feature of a giraffe.

  • This has some nice Daniel Tiger's Tiger Cake vibes (but a lamb).

  • I'm not sure what can be done at the free tier. There is a switch to turn on AI not blocking, and it breaks federation.

You can't whitelist domains because federation could come from and domain. Maybe you could somehow whitelist /inbox for the ActivityPub communication, but I'm not sure how to do that in Cloudflare.

  • Yeah Bandcamp is great. They also do Bandcamp Friday events where all the revenue goes to the artist.

The problem is it's really hard to find any mainstream bands on there. Presumably most of them sign away those rights when they get a label.

  • How do we know there isn't a number that was named by a mathematician like googol or Graham's number, where unlike defining it as a 1 with a hundred zeros after it, it's instead defined by it's spelling?

Here's one: the number seven thousand three hundred and seven is otherwise known as Da...ve's number, which is spelt with a D and then seven thousand three hundred and three A's, followed by ve's. It's a made up name for a number but so is googol so I think it should be a valid candidate.

  • In terms of Lemmy instances, if your instance is behind cloudflare and you turn on AI protection, federation breaks. So their tools are not very helpful for fighting the AI scraping.
