  • Yeah it's pretty rare so whatever system they are using is surely working fine most of the time.

  • I'll have a look, thanks!

  • Any in particular?

The idea is to get some census like data to learn about the kids of people who use our instance/Lemmy. We've put some effort into trying not to scare people off while still yielding useful data. If there is any feedback I'd love to hear it! I can't change much after the survey has started but I'd love to take feedback into the next time and help other instances too.

It's worth noting that no question is mandatory. If you're not comfortable answering a question you don't have to (and it's fine to e.g. skip the "census" style questions and jump to the questions about how you use Lemmy.)

  • Correct. If I had a lot of stuff open (I like to keep stuff open for when I get back to it) then the whole system was slow and would sometimes lock up completely. I needed to close things to keep it stable.

  • Wait, everyone is saying cached is part of the used memory but yours shows more cached than in use?

  • Mine was definitely not handling 16GB...

  • The study starts:

In Japan, folklore says that uncommon appearances of deep‐sea fish are an earthquake precursor.

I guess if three show up in a short time (as in the article) then there might be something else going on? More likely to be climate change than earthquakes though.

  • This site says Linux calls cached RAM "free" but in my screen shot it's definitely being shown as "used". I guess this is a choice of this app?

  • I love that there's an actual study on this. The link in the article is paywalled but you can download it here.

  • The swap is zram in this case.

  • Well having 64GB RAM has been a huge boost to how fast everything feels so this checks out.

  • Ah that makes sense.

  • What would you suggest as a starting point for someone who has never run an LLM before?

  • I dunno but the extra RAM was like a night and day difference.

  • I've had 64GB only a month or so and have not even broken 32GB before today. And now I find out this isn't even real, it's including cached RAM, so it sounds like I'm gonna need to get into LLMs! Shame it's on a laptop with integrated graphics.

  • Yip, got that now. I misunderstood, as it's different to Windows, which shows cached memory as free since it's available to apps as needed.

  • Thanks, someone else also mentioned this. Cached is considered used in Linux, where as in Windows it's considered free since applications can use it if they need it even though it holds data.

  • You don't want to know

  • Someone else pointed out cached RAM is shown as used in Linux, so Firefox is probably showing actual usage and the process list probably includes the RAM cached for Firefox.

  • Windows shows memory used for cache as free. Linux per default shows it as used.

    Ah thanks for the explanation!

Also I would disable swap, it is no longer 2004.

I'm using Bazzite as of recently, and learnt the first day not to touch the system. Anyway, it's zram not an on disk swap file.
