  • I think this is a really great response; I agree with you on a lot of this. I (personally) think we need more of this sort of dialog and less "American society is crumbling." I hope you'll agree here/try to keep that in mind as much as possible. IMO some outwardly expressed optimism and hope is really important and can go a long way towards fighting the collective depression and overwhelming feeling that we're up against an insurmountable force ... IMO we can get through all of this, we just have to work together and have constructive discussions on how.

There's definitely been some dropping the ball by previous generations, and I hope (and if we try, know) we can do better in the coming years.

  • I think as long as Lemmy handles this well in the software, it doesn't really matter(?)

  • This is definitely top 10 Linux memes of all time for me.

  • They're full of it, that's it. Maybe in their house which lacks sufficient insulation. Heat pumps (i.e. air conditioning) are/is extremely efficient at moving heat around, there's not really a practical limit on it, particularly if you go geothermal.

  • but its a symptom of a larger problem

    American society is crumbling

I've heard this before about a billion things, it's not a particularly useful take. IMO we've got a youth depression problem because of extremely hostile messaging about "how screwed our country is", "how screwed our planet is", and addictive mind manipulating social media apps.

I'm in my late twenties, my generation was plagued by hot take social media, and I think the current generation has it even worse. I'd love it if we could avoid these hot takes on Lemmy. Break the problems down into their pieces and attack those things; IMO, like solving any big problem, that's how we get through this.

  • I think the problem there is (likely) more the social media than the phones. I grew up with high schoolers having phones in the classroom in 2009-2013; Twitter and Facebook were the big two, and Instagram wasn't what it is now. Even then, Facebook & Twitter could kind of suck/cause drama way more than just the more basic things phones can be used for cameras, calculators, web browsers, and messaging family & friends.

"Addictive social media" in particular, is probably where congress's eyes need to be placed. That sounds like what this union is saying as well doing a quick skim, so 👍👍 .

  • The Polygon RSS feed

  • I mean... if you're running millions of sites on one box, and that itself isn't an issue, I'd assume your port saturation/traffic is pretty low.

  • I think it's acceptable, though I am working on my own ... for now experimental ... Lemmy client in C++/Qt/QML ... maybe eventually for desktop and mobile devices alike :)

  • Well... Part of that is just that web apps have much worse efficiency and performance compared to native apps. That's not to say their performance and efficiency is bad, but a native app will beat a web app everytime. The DOM and JavaScript are just not great models in terms of efficiency and performance.

  • If you vote in it or open it, it's marked read in most apps (the default web UI included).

  • Except that's not why this is a crime. You can do that all day everyday. This is a crime because of his intent to fight for what's in effect a hostile foreign terrorist organization.

  • I wonder if there will ever be Nvidia or Intel options.

  • I don’t personally, but it is another proposal, that’s why I mentioned it. There are some parts that seek decent but I have not read up on full explanations enough to understand the theory behind it.

    There are many better proposals

You literally claimed there are "many better" proposals, and listed two... One of which you yourself don't agree with, but only listed because "it's another proposal"? That's not a proposed better system, that's a red herring.

but how does a greedy person then get elected?

The same way they always have? They run for office and people vote them in? Do you think anyone in Ohio actually thought this guy was going to take 60 million in bribes?

Why aren't people removed currently when a majority of the country seems to agree a lot of politicians that are in Washington shouldn't be?

As for government and democratic improvements, since I’m assuming we are comparing against the US, we have a pretty shitty democratic structure and even governmental structure to some extent. First and foremost, the two party system and first past the post voting. Systems like ranked choice allow for a much broader set of parties and corresponding values to be expressed in governance. Other things like how shit of an institution the Supreme Court is, the electoral college, etc. A more European democratic model is much better.

Sure, but these same improvements could be made to our current system; why can't we even get that done?

And on top of that, the workers being in control will eliminate a lot of the motivations for businesses to do ‘bad’ things. Treatment of workers and profit distribution most obviously, but also things like quality of product or service, because the workers are also likely either direct consumers of it as well or more closely linked to direct consumers.

[needs citation]; genuinely not to be rude, but this is literally the same spiel everyone that's anti-capitalist gives. It's nothing of substance, it's entirely unproven. Even assuming it's true, you must assumes that you'll even be able to put and then keep the workers in power. Also, which workers, all the workers? Representatives for the workers? etc. That's a lot to take for granted.
