  • I'm on Ubuntu 23.10 (I think)

There indeed is an app store from where I installed few apps before. I need to check if they have Mullvad there. I do much prefer installing apps thru a GUI. While I know how to follow instructions and copy & paste these commands into terminal, it's frustrating as I have no idea what any of these does. I might just aswell be unknowingly installing a keylogger or something.

  • That's even more confusing.

I just don't get why on windows and mac I can download the app from their site, install it and it just works but on Linux I have to do everything thru terminal. It's not that I can't get it done but it just seems insane to me that it has to be this difficult.

  • Sure, but I never claimed that they don't exist. I'm just very sceptical about the claim that it's getting more common. I don't even remember when I last time saw a proper skinhead. Even those seemed to be way more common 15 years ago. And yes I know not all of them are nazies either.

  • Is it though? Or are we just calling more and more things nazi that in reality aren't? I can only speak for myself but in my case that word has entirely lost its meaning. It's basically calling someone stupid.

  • I think you're making a lot more assumptions there than I am. In my case there's really only two and neither involves magic. First is that general intelligence is not substrate dependent meaning that what ever our brains can do can also be done in silicon. The other is that we keep making technological advancements and don't destroy ourselves before we develop AGI.

Now since our brains are made of matter and are capable of general intelligence I don't see a reason to assume a computer couldn't do this aswell. It's just a matter of time untill we get there. That can be 5 or 500 years from now but unless something stops us first we're going to get there eventually one way or another. After all our brains are basically just a meat computer. Even if it wasn't any smarter than us it would still be million times faster at processing information. It effectively would have decades to think and research each reply it's going to give.

  • Yeah I agree. The apologia for Russia, China and just communism in general (or what ever you want to call it) fucks with your mind a bit. If Lemmy is the only social media you use it quickly starts to seem like this kind of thinking is far more common than what it really is and it can make one question their own sanity when reasonable sounding critizism of this is met with huge flood of downvotes. Especially if the discussion is happening on a place like lemmy.ml. As an outside observer I find it interesting as I haven't really met people like this before but trying to engage with them is one of the most frustrating things I've experienced especially since a mod is going to ban you mid-discussion for "misinformation and bigotry" or something similar while it's clear to everyone it's just CCP level cencorship to silence all dissidence.

  • I've been slowly getting back into reddit lately. While I want Lemmy to thrive and will keep contributing to help it do so it's still hardly a replacement for reddit. Compared to it, Lemmy is basically a single moderately active subreddit. If I had to name a type of person Lemmy at its current state is ideal for I'd say a left-wing activist type whose into tech and politics. While that has some overlap with what I'm interested about it still leaves out all my deepest passions and to be honest I feel really uncomfortable knowingly being in such an obvious echo chamber. I'd really wish there was more of the kind of users here that most of you probably dont want. Just to even things out a bit.
