I think encryption at rest for account data should be a thing, but there are better ways to communicate and organize if that's what you're trying to do
I think the biggest thing would just be making sure that it's not easy for the government to get user data. So making signups without personally identifiable info would potentially be worthwhile, so that info can't just be subpoenaed to identify users irl
I really like it personally, but I've heard some folks have somewhat mixed experiences with it
I think it's more of a different kind of Internet culture from Twitter than lemmy is from reddit (in both cases I'm ignoring obvious political differences)
Some folks have reported having experiences with that culture clash or crummy instance leadership. I never used twitter but I've heard it's more serious of a platform and culture (which in part might be that it's a fairly political culture like lemmy is).
All of that sounds negative but that's all second hand, my experience has been wonderful 😅. Granted, I mostly just use it to tell people I think their art is pretty and occasionally chat with splatoon folks (a competitive game I like). But I know lots of folks are very happy with it.
Like with much of the fediverse, getting unlucky and picking an instance that has leadership issues can cause problems for you, and picking a bigger instance generally gets you a kind of a more "vanilla" experience, but doesn't lean into the decentralized benefits of the fediverse as much. And Mastodon, although not as big as corporate platforms, is a fair bit bigger than lemmy/kbin I think
I have a bunch of lemmy accounts on various and have bounced around between them figuring out where I wanna be (thinking I might switch back to lem.ee), but with Mastodon I just picked mastodon.online and have never had any real issues so that's where my account is :)
Edit: actually, I wish the character limit is longer. I type too much (as you can see lol) and I'm not used to having a limit cause I never used twitter 😅
Hope this helps, if you have any particular questions feel free to ask ☺️
I've never felt inclined to regard bluesky with hostility, but definitely wouldn't call myself a fan; honestly that was a really thoughtful reply and improved my impression of bluesky as a platform
I hope they can avoid the pitfalls of venture capital funding and build a platform that doesn't suck, even if mastodon will be my microblogging home on the internet :)
Could you elaborate? I'm not a developer but the repo does appear to be populated. Someone in the Mastodon replies said he might have forgotten to push some commits, are y'all alluding to the same thing?
I don't have the requisite competency to see what you're saying so I'd love more info on what you mean and why you think that
That cultural context is super interesting. Here in the US I feel like I more often hear the shitty people of that type labeling themselves men's rights advocates
It makes sense that different places would have picked up different terms for that movement and as such would cary that unpleasant connotation, but I hadn't really thought about it
Thanks for sharing your thoughts, it gave me new things to think about :)
I don't entirely disagree but I do think it would help if he could work on stuff full time. He has like 4 separate projects he's running in his spare time around a job
I don't think it's smart of him to take on that many separate things in his spare time, and I agree that building it closed source first isn't a great choice, but I have no agency over those choices other than to tell him I think he could be making better choices on Mastodon
Ultimately, I don't expect people who build foss stuff I want to be perfect, or make the choices I think would be most optimal, or to be the most capable developer in the room. I don't see anyone else building it, so it's his project and he can make choices I don't agree with. And I don't even really think it's an issue of dev competency; the pixelfed app was literally on its first release when it started getting attention. The biggest problem is that all of his projects are moving at the speed of molasses, because he has four of them and also a full time job.
I want all the things he's building to exist, and he's the one who stepped up to the plate, so what I can do is donate as I'm able, talk about it so others know he needs funding, and continue offering feedback on Mastodon when he's discussing stuff.
I don't even particularly like the guy, but I still wanna see his projects succeed
Piefed is another fediverse link aggregator project, like lemmy and kbin
https://piefed.social/
You'll periodically see piefed accounts if you pay attention to user instances here :)
