  • as far as I could tell/search in 15 minutes, everyone was mad when they got bought by kape, but not seeing any evidence of decline in services by PIA. I have been using them for 4 years without a single issue.

that said - I am going to buy into the Proton package for drive & email, which gives me VPN "for free". meaning I was going to switch to ProtonVPN anyway, but from a consolidation/cost savings standpoint.

  • How did PIA fail? It showed a forwarded port but didn't work, or it wouldn't show a port?

If the latter, I had the same problem at first but it was a simple matter of changing servers. Not all their servers support it. After changing it appeared to have no issues and showed a forwarded port that I then used in qbittorrent.

  • There's no way Steve knew or intended this would blow up the way it did. After Steve's original 45 min video, the situation was still "recoverable" at LMG.

Then Linus dug in not once, but twice, and then the Madison post.

Has Steve said anything else recently? Hopefully he kinda backs off, honestly. It's gone way beyond the original scope of his video.

  • oh I wouldn't say I'm "adamant" - but to answer your question I was looking to unGoogle my Google Drive and GMail, and Proton popped up pretty quick for having both. I'm currently paying for Private Internet Access VPN, but once that expires I could also get a 3rd function out of Proton with their VPN. I also want my new mail service to allow custom domains, which Proton also does.

  • I'm a windows user, but I did play around when I built my media PC. Mint had problems right away with monitor drivers (AMD iGPU) and connecting to the home network (all SMB windows drives).

Before giving up, I tried Ubuntu, and with Ubuntu i DID experience the "it just works" and no problems getting everything running. That said, I still eventually went to windows, because I just dont have the free time to learn/adjust to another environment. But I did really like it. (Ubuntu)
