  • I think it has a bit to do with a lot of firmware or drivers being closed source too. I feel like a couple years ago I ran into that issue with camera my old Android phone had

  • Maybe the blog that is hosted on a Nintendo Wii. It's not the most practical hack but I find console modding really neat and the "because I can" style projects are particularly fascinating to me.

Some other favorite hacks are a bit more practical and have to do with extending the life of existing products. RebbleOS, for example, is an open source firmware that took off after Pebble shutdown following their acquisition by FitBit in 2016. It's allowed people to continue using their e-ink Pebble watches largely unchanged. They can still do things like fetch the weather and voice dictation.

  • On a related note for anyone interested there are a lot of programs out there for using other peripherals such as webcams, Xbox 360 Kinects, PSVR cameras and headsets, and so on for VR on PC.

iVRy Driver and Driver4VR are some pretty popular paid programs on Steam that assist with the setup process.

/r/PSVRHack is neat if you are in that ecosystem.

  • It depends if I feel the death is deserved and if I'm having fun.

If I'm playing something like Battlefield and keep dying because of someone's skills with a plane I'm fine with that and it definitely feels like it's on me. If it's someone sliding around shipment in Call of Duty mobile killing me as soon as I spawn and I'm lucky if I end their kill streak I feel like that's on the game because of baked in mechanics being frustrating to counter.

I would say it's definitely the most noticeable with games like Elden Ring. I suck so bad at them but I feel like I deserve each death and don't feel irritated by dying.

It's only in situations where someone is hacking that I would actually blame another player.

  • Isn't an initialism a subcategory of acronym by definition?

  • Is that correct? I think by definition an initialism can be considered a form of acronym. The way I worded the question includes those subsets of acronyms

  • Mount Your Friends is an Xbox 360 era go-to for me. Very easy to get into and gets people competitive (in a good way). The only downside is it's probably not the most appropriate game to play with kids for your situation

  • Not the best to any degree but just wanted to shout out the Pimps at Sea mod for Halo MCC that adds boats

  • Is Black Flag good to play if you don't like or follow the over arching story of Assassins Creed?

I felt like it kind of pulled me out of other games in the series

  • Another one that came to mind is TF2. I like Titanfall 2 more than Team Fortress 2 but I associate the acronym with Team Fortress 2.

  • I wish there was an option to turn off link-only posts. At least have something in the body of the post. Maybe a quote or a TLDR. Otherwise it just feels like a bot posting.

  • I am not a fan. I don't like link dumps. It doesn't create a discussion and the article or whatever is being relayed might be total shit and there could be better or more direct sources.

If I saw a Hackaday article about a neat project on GitHub I wouldn't just post the article with the original title. I would probably link the GitHub page and in the body of the post link the article with a quote and maybe post similar projects in case people are interested.

I specifically dislike the bots that repost content from Reddit. The communities they post to feel fake and end up receiving so many posts actual Lemmy users posting to them get washed away in the flood.

It's not a big deal for some communities (ex. Nature photos) but doesn't make sense for discussion focused ones.

    I block those bots

  • Ask Lemmy @lemmy.world

What acronyms are you annoyed to see take on other meanings?

  • Is anyone surprised by this? I feel like similar things have happened in the past with back breeding

  • I've done this a few times in different Civilizations games to see how the computer would react to things like an abundance of gold or over powered for the current turn units.

A lot of the time it was underwhelming with them not really utilizing what was given to them or switching up their strategy. With gold they wouldn't buy units or tiles and would still demand gold during trades or for peace for example.

  • On Bedrock you can just edit a text file to increase the loaded distance. I feel like there's probably something similar for Java

  • I wonder if they would reuse the scraps similar to how Lego reuses defective bricks

  • Maybe it has to do with how the card is setup. For example if the phone believes it's a portable device versus something for internal storage it might not provide the option in case someone encrypts the card not realizing they will need decryption software on other devices they want to use it on.

  • I believe they are sold in the same size box as any other soap so I don't think transportation would really matter.

  • Yeah. "Dairy products" and ice cream is an example I feel like more people are aware of.

That was what I was getting at. From what I've read online Dove's use of synthetic detergent and claims of moisturizing are reasons why it can't be labelled as soap under the FDA
