  • The automation is because it’s always been a felony not to register, same as it is in virtually every country with mandatory service, so to avoid the horrifically needless societal effects that come from giving someone a felony for a random crime, they simply automated it.

Basically what they did with social security years ago. Used to also be a crime to not sign up by a certain age, so they just started immediately registering all children at birth.

  • I could actually believe that.

For the socially right wing people, we’ve seen them on the grad constantly. They’re the people who might be full marxists, but then despise LGBT people because they’re devout Muslims or Christians, or they were raised in an environment with those ideals and never shook them. Or they’re the people that are so extremely anti-racist that they end up becoming racist themselves. Or people that want socialism but only for chauvinist and protectionist reasons while hating foreigners.

For the economic right wing, I blame that on the right having good optics with their “bootstraps”, “individual freedom” and other such slogans that entice people on the surface. Or they know nothing about economics and they choose right wing options because they simply sound good despite being disastrous.

  • Twitter changed their API and killed the service purposefully.

  • This is a complete blindside. Your politics have always been an enigma and you’ve left many baffled with where you lie on the spectrum. Especially with the suspicion right wing post yesterday…. Hmm

  • Say what you will of Islam, there have been ethnic groups with ties to Islam in China for 500+ years, but before 1800 no meaningful Christian presence.

This is not true. Christianity was introduced to China by Syriac (Syria and Iraq) missionaries and believers of Nestorian Christianity who traveled the Silk Road in the 7th century in 635. Literally 1400 years ago, and 20 years after Islam was even founded.

These missionaries settled in Xi’an, the capital of the Tang Dynasty, where they met with Emperor Tiazong, who was extremely interested in the religion, and allowed the missionaries to settle. They then built around 20-30 churches across China, translated the Bible into Chinese, and established a significant presence that would last the next thousand years. There are silk portraits of Jesus, thousands of tombstones dating to 700-1200 with crosses and Christian iconography, and so on.

It’s also an extremely unknown portion of history, but the Mongol Empire was significantly influenced by Christianity and was in close contact with the Papacy. This only spread Christianity further in China.

  • Honestly I think it’s because everyone expected it to be Ukraine, and having ISIS or Chechens appear was absolutely not anticipated at all by anyone.

It might be reasonable to say that Ukraine had no part in this and ISIS saw a target of opportunity while Russia was distracted, and that’s something that no one expected.

  • What do you mean when you say “you can’t imagine ISIS planning attacks on European soil?” That is their absolute bread and butter, do you not remember the various bombings and shootings that killed hundreds of people? The Paris shooting, the Brussels bombing, the Nice shooting, the London bombing, the Manchester Stadium bombing, etc.

There have been dozens of attacks in the last 10 years.

  • I hope the surgery went well, wishing you and kiska the best of luck!

  • There was a conversation about this a while ago on the grad when I asked the exact same question funnily enough. If you can find the thread the discussion there was very good and would probably answer your question. Not much has changed since that post was made.

  • I wouldn't say malicious, but this reads like it comes from person who either doesn't have HIV and doesn't understand the nature of the disease and its history, or a person who is incredibly privileged and unaware that anti-virals are horrifically expensive, rare, and unobtainable for the vast majority of people.

  • Thanks for pointing that out! I worded my point poorly and I'll go edit that. What I was trying to say is that HIV progresses to AIDS and causes severe damage frequently due to its hidden nature, and the "low consequences" depends when the infection is caught. If it is caught during the acute infection stage, or early in the infection then damage would be minimal. However, the vast majority of people are not getting regular STD or blood testing and for some people it never crosses their mind because they've only ever had a tiny amount of partners, or maybe only one as in the case with 50% of Gen-Z.

Further, why would you get tested if your partner looked healthy, all you got was a bad case of the "flu" that was "definitely" unrelated to the sex, and your partner never told you about their status? We cannot also discount the social stigma surrounding testing, which while improving in recent years, still carries the stigma in large parts of the world that, "Why would you get tested if you aren't dirty or a prostitute"? Or the general unavailability of testing. Organizations like Planned Parenthood or college STD labs are invaluable, but not everyone has access to that.

For that reason, what are the odds of that person finding the disease in the Clinical Latency or chronic stage before it develops into AIDS or a more devastating secondary infection takes hold? Even without a secondary infection, AIDS has its own list of devastating symptoms.

  • I lurked for over a year and so when I joined I jumped in quickly and hit the ground running. Might have made me seem like I was an even longer term user.

  • In my jurisdiction putting an non-consenting individual at risk for HIV is counted as sexual violence at minimum and attempted murder if the person is doing it maliciously or is attempting to cover up their HIV positive status. This must be disclosed by doctors to the police or the doctor will lose their license.

  • Not disclosing HIV status is classified as sexual violence and a heavy crime in many jurisdictions that can land a person in prison for over 10 years.

A person cannot consent to something they are not aware of, and purposefully not disclosing HIV status can change the course of a persons entire life or kill them.

Also the Hep -C comparison is a terrible one. Damage such as whats mentioned happens only with long term infection without treatment. Same with STDs such as syphillis. HIV is incurable, will cause severe damage in the stages it is normally caught, even if the person uses all options that medicine has, and will irrevocably change their lives. Also, they can now spread it to other people unknowingly. Comparing HIV to other STD’s is a Coughing Baby v Hydrogen Bomb scenario.

Also HIV antivirals can cost from 700-4000 dollars A MONTH, for a person with HIV. The medicine is rare, difficult to develop, and must be fine tuned to each person or they not work. What if a person cannot afford this? Or they are in an area that doesn’t have access to that extremely rare medication?

    ALL STDs should be disclosed.

  • Wow, it was almost a year till I joined? I remember lurking on the Reddit for two years, then lurking here without an account for almost a year to test the waters. Time flies.

  • Lemmygrad premium currency microtransactions when?

  • Do you guys wonder if they allowed Navalny to run against Putin, and Putin got 55% of the vote while Navalny got 45% of the vote; would liberals still laugh, cope, and seethe at the “rigged Russian elections”? Despite that being identical to how western elections look?

  • Isn’t this pretty common? When traveling, backpacking, homeless, or without general access to a washing machine; isn’t it fairly common for people to dump their clothes in a bathtub with some detergent and then scrub and mix them around?

That’s what I always did at least. Does the same thing as a machine just a lot more tiring.

Good to hear you’re no longer in that situation though.

  • Also happens in Starship Troopers. All the veterans are missing limbs and are confined to wheelchairs, crutches, arm slings; as prosthetics are all but unheard of because they are perversely proud and happy to have gotten their disfigurements and disabilities.
