  • It was closer to $10, but Wandersong was worth every penny. It's a puzzle/platformer game where you play a bard, the main gimmick of the game being that you have to sing your way out of any problems you encounter. It feels like something that should get stale, but the game is always thinking up new ways to use the mechanic from communicating with ghosts, to making plants grow, to convincing bugs to move rocks out of your way. Great characters, great story, good soundtrack. Definitely worth trying if it's sitting in your library from a bundle or a sale.

  • Not a big golf game fan, but Death's Door looks like it could be fun. I'm surprised Dreams hasn't already been a PS Plus title. Given the focus on game creation, you would think Sony would have wanted it in as many hands as possible.

  • It's a shame we didn't get a proper sequel to Mania. Still, at least we're getting a spiritual successor that hopefully lives up to its predecessor. And I'm excited to see what Evening Star does with an original property.

  • It feels weird to be watching this conference in such high quality. I had forgotten just how many memes this conference spawned, but I do miss that awkwardness a lot of the mid-2000s E3 presentations had. They weren't just a guy in a suit talking about sales figures anymore, but they were still a long way from the more polished showcases we have today.

  • I've been playing Doom 2 and getting into Doom mods. I saw a video about the Ashes 2063 mod and decided to try it out. It's a post-apocalyptic mod inspired by series like Fallout, Stalker, and Metro. I've seen a lot of mixed reactions about it online, but I'm really enjoying it so far, especially the second episode. It's almost like a Bethesda-style Fallout game built in Doom with little side quests and hub areas to explore in between the shooting. I keep having to remind myself that it's a free Doom mod and not an indie throwback shooter built from the ground up.

  • I'd say so, but then again Morrowind has a lot of quirks that make it hard to get into for modern players. Like the fact that the game doesn't have quest markers. Instead, you get directions like "follow the road and turn left at the fork, it'll be the first cave you see" and you have to follow those directions if you want to find anything. Or how the game uses a dice roll-like system to decide if you hit with your weapon or succeed at casting a spell. At the same time, there is a lot to like about Morrowind if you give it a chance. Unlike a lot of modern RPGs, you don't start out as anyone special. You're a nobody and you stay as a nobody for a good chunk of the game. To advance in the various guilds you have to actually level up your various skills and do enough quests to earn a promotion. So when you do reach the rank of guild master or complete the main quest and people call you a hero it feels like you've really accomplished something.

    So yeah. Definitely worth playing, but it's not for everybody and you have to remember that it's an RPG from the early 2000s. If you play it with OpenMW there's a great site called Modding OpenMW that catalogs mods that are compatible with OpenMW.

  • Exciting stuff! Not having to manually edit the files when setting up mods is a welcome change and I'm excited that they have started implementing the Lua scripting. Obviously, there is still a long, long way to go until OpenMW reaches parity with MWSE when it comes to Lua, but it will be interesting to see what mods people come up with as the features expanded in subsequent releases.

  • Well. This certainly has me reconsidering buying any Ubisoft games. I get that we just license all our entertainment now when we purchase it legally, but most companies are smart enough to not remind you of that fact and how easily they could cut you off from everything you've bought.

  • Not all that surprising that piracy has become so big in Russia. If people can't access something legally they'll still find a way. Wasn't there a proposal to essentially legalize piracy back when Western businesses started pulling out of Russia? Or at least loosen the restrictions against piracy? Not sure if it ever happened, but it's hard to see that percentage of piracy go down unless relations between Russia and the West normalize. Or unless Western businesses quietly start doing business there again once they think no one cares.

  • Oh man, I played so much of this game growing up. Yeah, a lot of the flak it gets for repetitive gameplay, poor controls, and edginess is somewhat justified. At the same time, I feel like this was perfectly aimed at mid-2000s kids who wanted a more "mature" and "adult" Sonic game without really understanding what that meant.

  • Maybe? There are a lot of them and the quality varies depending on the book. You can't go wrong with the original Thrawn Trilogy by Timothy Zahn. Heir to the Empire, Dark Force Rising, and Last Command were considered the unofficial sequel trilogy by some fans and they started off the entire Star Wars Expanded Universe, which got rebranded to the Legends continuity when Disney took over. Besides the Thrawn Trilogy, I'd also recommend the Revenge of the Sith novelization. I went in not expecting much, but it really expands on a lot of things the movie brushes over, and witnessing Anakin's story from his viewpoint was a lot more compelling than what we got in the movie. From there, it really depends on what you want to read about.
    The Star Wars book finder is a neat tool that lets you search by author, topic, or genre if you're looking for something specific.

  • All the hype around the My House Wad last month got me interested in playing Doom II so I'm working my way through it this week. I played through the first Doom ages ago, but just never got around to the sequel. Looking forward to diving into the Doom 2 modding scene when I've played through it.

  • Disappointing, but not surprising. I was hopeful when Square sold off their properties to Embracer, who at least seemed like they wanted to do something with Deus Ex, but with their recent financial troubles, it wouldn't be surprising if they scaled back any plans they had for the franchise.
