Re-reading I can see you weren’t actually claiming English speakers needed to use the Italian pronunciation. Some people do claim that so I just kind of continued my lifelong argument with those people :)

I agree that basic sounds from one language that don’t exist in another language are interesting.

I mean, this word does have an English pronunciation that is distinct from the Italian pronunciation, which follows English phonology.

If he got elected and the trial wasn’t over, wouldn’t they try to argue that it all has to be put on hold while he’s president?

I’d agree with this if you were saying there’s a clear possibility of this, rather than treating it as a foregone conclusion. Because we don’t know for sure how it’s going to go at this point. But yeah, I don’t feel comfortable counting on these court cases taking Trump out of the equation at all.

Because:

1. The words “lose” and “loose” have the same vowel sound (and for some reason the extra “o” changes /z/ to /s/).
2. There are no other words ending in -ose that have the /u/ sound
3. Many words ending in -oose exist that have an /u/ sound, including the very common word, “choose”, which has the same /uz/ sound that “lose” has at the end

I never get these spellings mixed up but I can absolutely understand why someone would.

That's really all you have to say? Your statement that I responded to strongly suggested at least one, if not multiple, clear opportunities to make major changes to marijuana law that Democrats didn't take. Are you not interested in the fact that that is not true?

Your reaction is like if someone pointed out factually wrong statements made by an antivaxxer and the antivaxxer responded with "I guess I shouldn't try to protect my body". No, that part is perfectly fine, it's that you should just use actual facts or you could end up deciding on a course of action that is diametrically opposed to the outcome you want!

I hope you don’t consider the 50-50 split Senate to be one of the times we “gave Democrats Congress and the presidency”. Do you think they were going to find 10 Republicans and overcome the filibuster for that legislation?

The last time the Democrats had control that gave them a realistic chance of doing something like this, marijuana legalization didn’t even have majority support in the US. Even among Democrats it was pretty divided.

The time before that, Bill Clinton was president and was under fire for admitting he had ever tried marijuana in his life, and had to claim he “didn’t inhale”.

And those were all the times in my life that the Democrats had any sort of majority in Congress and a Dem president.

You make it sound like there have been these chances over and over. But there isn’t even one single time you can look back at and say “right here, you had all the opportunity in the world and we asked you to do it, and you didn’t do it”.

I get that you don’t think things should be this way. But you’re singling out Biden for criticism. All I am asking you is just some hypothetical course of action that the president could have been doing to make the school lunch thing happen in this situation.

The law was created by Congress (not the president) and it’s set up as a federally funded, state-administered program. Without some sort of explanation for how Biden should have solved this problem, I have to assume that you are speaking out of ignorance of how our government works. And the thing that frustrates me is that the GOP did this cynical move knowing that people like you will just put the blame on the president. They get what they want from their evil, bullshit political stunts.

And meanwhile, you direct your anger and energy in the wrong place, so that even if you got what you want — a president you think is awesome — you’d find that the problems aren’t solved at all because the government is so much more than the president.

You forgot to answer my question actually.

What would a federal school meal program that operates without the support of the state/local government look like? If schools were federally run then that would be one thing, but they are not.

(I’m really sick of people making absolutely horrible things done by the GOP into a criticism of Biden/Democrats for not doing something extraordinary or impossible to keep it from happening. Especially when the GOP deliberately and cynically does the horrible thing to harm the Democrats’ election chances.)

I think what they are trying to say is, how can it be that a person knows about and understands that loud sounds in every other context can damage your hearing, and yet never realized that loud sounds in video games are bad in the same way as everything else

The OED has been like this for at least 15 years (possibly longer but that’s when I first encountered it). So I wouldn’t consider this an appropriate example of the enshittification that’s been taking place of late.

I have YouTube premium and an adblocker and I don’t have this problem. I’m skeptical that it’s related.

Honestly, if they said only that part in a memo, it would still obviously be very bad but it would be so much better than embedding it within this video. If I were an employee watching this, when they reached the part where they play Iko Iko while people dance after the CEO delivered the ultimatum, I’d want to shoot myself in the fucking head.

I mean you could put dashes on either side of “all of them” potentially instead of commas, but commas also work, especially in more poetic prose. Where would you straight-up remove a comma from the line?
