  • Recuperation

I don't believe reclamation has a particular political definition, though leftist projects will often speak of reclaiming things from capitalist culture, which is "reverse recuperation" or what the Situationists called détournement.

  • Imagine being stranded in space after you were already nervous about taking a Boeing vessel up, and then learning your only hope of rescue is Elon Musk.

If I lived to get home I'd never fly again and devote myself to fixing NASA, what a fiasco.

  • In the Unknown Armies setting, McD's was infiltrated by a magick cabal called the Mak Attax, who "bless" burgers with random magick effects in order to trigger a slow broad awakening to magick in the general population.

  • So garlic has fewer protons... chemistry is finally starting to make sense!

  • Oh you have no idea how deep my paranoia on this goes! We've been implementing Dynamics 365 at my office, MS made software that manages your entire business from the accounting ledgers on out. Copilot AI is everywhere in it, trying to encourage you to teach it how to do things.

MS wants to offer the next generation of knowledge worker. No more accountants, no more senior managers of inventories and all those many miscellaneous titles it takes to run a company. Certainly no more technical support. AI is going to do it all. MS wants to tell every business how to do business.

  • Weirdly compelled to construct and then climb into the joctopussy jair. Is this what being driven mad into an Old One cult feels like?

  • Damn, cool and wise alien!

  • Voyager (on android) puts a little cake-slice emoji 🍰 next to people's names. I get tickled because I joined during one of the big exodi from Reddit so I share cake day with a lot of other people.

  • I think it's important for developers to stay active within the community and try to understand how the community uses the tools available and what additions or changes are desired or would be beneficial. Obviously people disagree about what those things are at times, but I think with patience and empathy we can iterate ideas and get to better places.

I see people posting more and more news on Lemmy and I enjoy that, but it does make the need for tools that fight disinformation. Maybe that's the source-checker bot (feels like a stopgap to me) or maybe that's a combination of new ui and api features that draw from Twitter's community fact-checking and how some instances are use bias-checkers.

Moderation tools are always in need of improvement too.

Hey I even think silly shit like emoji reactions and awards have a place for people that prefer less verbal forms of interaction but still want nuance or whimsy.

  • I think Dracula would be considered a cult classic. I love it, the ridiculous acting, MFing Gary Oldman Dracula, the extreme stylization, the costumes, there's just so much to love.

It apparently has a tomato score of 74% which is perfect to me. All movies should strive to be 7/10s: not too polished and clean, not trying for mass appeal, but doing something so good and weird that it hits just right for some people and completely turns off others.

  • Jimmy?

  • Probably thinking of radioactive Carbon-14. Uranium-238 and -235 are the most common isotopes of that element. Uranium-14 would be tricky, since the negative 86 protons (electons?) would make it highly unstable, and also a different element.

Also you are correct that asbestos is dangerous when you breathe it in, but it's banned widely because it's brittle and very easy to get particles of it into the air through accidental damage.

  • I hope they sing "Goodbye Trump" not only because Goodbye Earl is a banger of a song but also because i want to laugh about Ben Shapiro complaining that The Chicks threatened to murder Trump and open a lesbian jam stand over his secret grave.

  • Similar to programming.

    stares at monitor

    scrolls mouse wheel

    fuck, cocking shit, unbelievable

    scrolls mouse

    what moron wrote this?

    ctrl+f, typing

oh. fucking imbecile, dunce, fuckballs, ass

    types 3 letters, hits "run"

ah fixed! another shining golden piece of God's own perfect code completed!

  • I was curious if (since these are statistical models and not actually counting letters) maybe this or something like it is a common "gotcha" question used as a meme on social media. So I did a search on DDG and it also has an AI now which turned up an interestingly more nuanced answer.

It's picked up on discussions specifically about this problem in chats about other AI! The ouroboros is feeding well! I figure this is also why they overcorrect to 4 if you ask them about "strawberries", trying to anticipate a common gotcha answer to further riddling.

DDG correctly handled "strawberries" interestingly, with the same linked sources. Perhaps their word-stemmer does a better job?

  • Hmm, an intriguing idea, an adventure game but you have to use a fantasy version of git or svn to mine through old source code repos looking for erased clues, abandoned forks, and other hints of The Truth hiding in the code. Using file diffs to compare versions of a .finger file found on two different VMs where some significant detail has changed (a file hash or a phone number or something).

Could be good in several genres too. Secret romance in the all queer dev team, lovecraftian digital dieties hiding in the archives, counter-espionage trying to locate a critical secret under time pressure, etc

  • More exciting to me than finding one of Hemmingway's typewriters! Ah, imagine if like the original id software NeXTSTEP machines had been preserved? Or the devkits used to make NES classics? What a treat, to boot up and look through the scattered virtual desk of one of the founders!
