  • My understanding is that it's related to the decline of three and four engine planes. Originally airlines preferred them over two engined planes because they were safer, had greater range, and could carry more passengers. On the other hand, they were more expensive to operate due to requiring more maintenance and fuel. Additionally, these planes were larger and couldn't get into places that smaller twinjets could. Eventually technology improved to the point that the (literal) costs of more engines began to outweigh the benefits to airlines. These days most passenger airlines only operate twinjets and the remaining tri- and quadjets are relegated to cargo.

  • I have a huge physical media collection. I don't feel like I actually own something unless I can touch it. The only time I buy digital is when something isn't available any other way. I think in my case it's an autism thing rather than an ADHD thing since I'm both.

  • I wasn't aware that there's a paid version. Based on their website it does look like they have a lot of standard stuff locked behind Pro. Is it just like an additional repo or something? I'm also not too keen on the fact that the upgrade doesn't carry over to the next major version.

  • I'm pretty sure that's Zorin. I've never used it myself, but from what I've heard it might be a good choice for OP's person.

  • The reason the US doesn't do that is thanks to lobbying by companies like Intuit and H&R Block.

  • That's basically what rabbits do. From Wikipedia:

Easily digestible food is processed in the gastrointestinal tract and expelled as regular feces. To get nutrients out of hard to digest fiber, rabbits ferment fiber in the cecum (part of the gastrointestinal tract) and then expel the contents as cecotropes, which are reingested (cecotrophy or refection). The cecotropes are then absorbed in the small intestine to use the nutrients. Soft cecotropes are usually consumed during periods of rest in underground burrows.

  • For Japanese I use an IME (input method editor), specifically Fcitx. Basically it lets you type in romaji and converts that into kana or kanji. Just note that it needs an additional package (like fcitx-mozc) for each language.

  • I got distracted and forgot there were two guys halfway through the sentence.

  • At some point in the early 90s my mom's American Staffordshire Terrier was stolen. About a week later a pair of guys show up at the house with the dog. "Lady, please take your dog back!". He shoves the dog through the doorway and they take off as fast as he can.

  • I was doing some quick research and saw someone suggest installing each OS with the other drive disconnected. That way you can first get each one working individually and there's no chance of one messing with the other's bootloader.

  • Do you have the os-prober package installed? I haven't used Fedora in over a decade, so I don't know if it's a default or not.

  • Mom's side of the family is Catholic and my dad's side is super reserved, so I got nothing. Anything I know comes from school health classes (which were actually really informative) and the internet.

My mom also believes that this sort of thing shouldn't be taught in schools (at all) because it should be up to the parents to decide what their kids should know about the subject. She also says that her parents never taught her anything.

  • Okay, so for some context .ml is run by the Lemmy devs and the devs are openly tankies (authoritarian communists). .ml, along with Lemmygrad (also run by the devs) and Hexbear are known as the Tankie Triad. While not as bad as the other two, .ml still has a lot of tankies compared to instances that aren't part of the triad. Additionally, .ml used to be the recommended instance (until .world came along), making it one of the more populated instances. Most other instances defederate with Lemmygrad and Hexbear, but not necessarily .ml.

Basically, there's a lot of extremely opinionated and often combative people there and provoking them (intentionally or not) is very easy.

That's my understanding of the situation anyway.

  • I believe people from Moscow are called Muscovites. I don't know about Versailles though.

  • This reminds me that I once read about a Thompson Twins game that was distributed as a flexi disc record. In order to actually play the game it had to be copied to a cassette first. Apparently it's pretty rare, since it was only available as a bonus with a specific issue of a magazine.

  • I have a Thinkpad T480 that I'm very happy with. I believe it's around 7 or 8 years old, but it works great. Unlike most laptops, it doesn't have soldered RAM, so it's easily upgraded. One downside is that most units don't come with a lot of storage, so you'll probably want to get a larger drive. I spent around $200 on mine plus another $100 for the SSD. It's a great inexpensive laptop that'll last for years.
