  • Haha, I'm right there with you. I'm off Twitter & Reddit, I had no alternatives until Sync came back...

  • Exactly. The other end of it is that a lot of the app-specific advanced functionality made the transition for Day 1 - unless Infinity/else has some tricks i'm unaware of, its currently the most customizable/feature complete app - actual tablet modes, foldable support, biometrics for subaccounts, user painting/tagging for sub accounts, profile backups so you can carry customizations to other android devices - etc.

Its all auxiliary & definitely not required, but losing these features made Lemmy a no-go on mobile for me. It's also missing some real basic stuff like mod tools & the ability to make posts at all, but i've used the app for a decade & the dev is quickly pushing fixes/new features out the door.

  • Hell yeah. Special shout-out to Sync for Lemmy for reeling me back in as a daily user.

  • Absolutely - our local smoke shop in my towns plaza.

  • Feels odd that we are unquestionably on the verge of losing this form factor. I like the Pixel Fold approach, but I've become fond of the candy bar exterior display. It's a bit less fun for texting, but makes scrolling social media timelines a treat

  • Aside from the polish, it's also the familiar UX that many of us have used for a decade. It just feels familiar & right now!

  • Exactly my point :) This platform is unstable & the userbase isn't dependable, especially so in the context of 3PA customers

How do you make this project viable/sustainable? Price it appropriately. I've already completed one decade with LJ & Sync, so I'm happy to bank on this app. And if it doesn't, that's the gamble - nobody is forced to agree, but it'd be odd for anyone to argue Sync should be priced in accordance with any expectation that the platform dies in the next year or so.

  • The whole pricing debate is so exhausting. Anybody who feels $20 is too steep for an app they might use for the next decade is welcome to their opinion, but they'll never have the same perspective as those of us who enjoyed a decade of improvements to Sync for Reddit. LJ is a class act, Sync is leagues ahead of all other 3PAs, and I'm happy to pay my share.

There are so many FOSS & alternative options. LJ is dedicating his full attention to a niche platform and has set up a subscription model that allows this project to remain sustainable for him & his team (yes, team). Feel free to go with any other option, but let's not pretend that Sync is the antichrist for being the first Lemmy 3PA developer that is prioritizing sustainability after a decade of supporting users who paid $2

  • Update with one time ad free option in review process right now

  • I love Lemmys existence, I am devoted to Sync. The release guarantees I will be active daily moving forward.

  • Am I missing something? This article is 7 years old & mentions nothing about keylogging

  • Inversely, why tolerate squatting? If you want to build the community up, great, but reserving is stupid if it isn't done in good faith

  • ShareX and it isn't even close

  • Thanks for the suggestion - Liftoff/else we're great, Connect is outstanding until we get Sync.

  • Absolutely floored at how active this instance & community is. It's like I never left Reddit.

    Cheers!!

  • Love this article - it hits every nail on the head. Still loving my ZF4 - have to give a special shoutout to the new Samsung Care plan. It took me a bit longer to get my phone repaired, but I got the inner screen repaired for $29, which is outstanding
