I don't think that's true. It was the bloodiest war in US history. The North probably wasn't going to lose, they had too much going for them, but the insurrectionists weren't a rambunctious group of terrorists. They had a trained and equipped army and the officer corp on both sides were equally well trained. If the British had intervened, as the South was petitioning them to do, we would have had an enormous problem on our hands. Lincoln declaring emancipation was, in part, meant to appeal to anti slavery activists in Parliament, whom at this point had significant political clout in the empire.
The idea that the North sat around and sipped coffee while their industrial and financial bases smashed the south is too simple.
If you don't use someone's preferred neopronouns you are LITERALLY committing genocide against trans people. That's right, not using the preferred neopronouns is as grave a sin against humanity as any famine, plague, or murderous policy.
Because to most people in Kentucky keeping America safe from Hillary Clinton is more important than healthcare, abortion access, or school funding. Those voters have shown us their priorities, time and time again, and they truly care more about culture war nonsense than anything else.
There is no hostile takeover of Islam because there is no centralized figure in Islam. The Muslims saw how politicized the early Roman Church became and intentionally took steps to prevent that. There is no pope. There are no bishops, archbishops, or any of that. Islam is intentionally fractured more so than Christianity.
Anyone can become an Imam (priest) and set up shop and start preaching. Clergy in a nation like Saudi Arabia maintain their religious authority through the government and social attitudes, not through a divine mandate (like the pope).
You and I are reading that title. That automatically means we aren't average American voters. Most voters do not watch the news, let alone read it, let alone go on a forum like Lemmy and get in the discussion thread and have an ongoing conversation about politics.
IMO because the average voter won't pay attention to some manifesto. Average people who vote Democrat don't get riled up to go to the polls because some Republicans wrote this document.
In Spanish you have one tamal but two tamales. In English you have one tamale, two tamales. We incorrectly removed the pluralization from tamales and now we have this hybrid word, tamale.
I never thought an extreme Leftist or five would openly and brazenly support a regime that literally made supporting LGBTQ+ stuff a crime only a year or two ago. It's wild.
Your view of what Leftist means is extremely biased within the modern American context if you are surprised by that. There are lots of definitions of Leftist and the 2023 American Left-wing definition is not the only one.
Some mental illnesses are "cool" or "accepted" now. They are socially acceptable to talk about and having one can even give you clout. Depression and ADHD are in this category.
The rest of the disabilities are still too taboo to talk about. You are better off just keeping it to yourself. Bipolar, schizo-affective, and borderline personality disorder are in this category.
Today, people will tell you with a straight face that they are a victim because they have one of the popular illnesses. It is "in" to be a victim now but, ironically, it's only socially acceptable to be a victim of some illnesses. If you have e.g. bipolar disorder it's so stigmatized that you will face repercussions for announcing it yet people still have the audacity to tell you they are a victim.
Don't bother. They've most likely only ever heard about stock buybacks on social media with little context otherwise. They have no idea the pros of buybacks, only a politically-charged subset of cons.
Loan forgiveness helps college educated Americans. The GOP has vilified college education as elitist. So blocking loan forgiveness is like a PR will for the GOP base.
We're old mate. Hype trains don't stop for people older than 22.
