  • Mr Chester said the dog-swimming events were fundraisers that contribute to the restoration and sustainability of the lido and subsidise swims for humans throughout the season.

It is thought this year will generate about £60,000, and it is estimated some £250,000 has been raised since the events began in 2017.

That's great! The dogs have fun, the humans have fun and the swimming pool gets some money.

  • Fun facts:

We finished paying off our World War 1 reparation debt in 2010.

Although we're going to pay Namibia 1.1 billion, although those are explictely not reparations officially, because we also don't want to set a precedent on the matter.

(and needless to say we're still actively paying for the Holocaust)

  • Yeah, and generally governments around the world pay a lot of subsidies to all kinda of industries. There are a lot of jobs on that, not just the factory itself, but the whole structure around it that delivers parts and services to the factory. Then you want to secure some important technologies and productions in your country.

E.g. in Germany we are going to invest a lot in semiconductor factories. We won't see a direct return in tax from those factories for quite a while or even ever. However, securing that technology and production in the country is worth it.

  • It's kinda funny how this is the opposite problem of the usual "they all look the same!"

I would probably unable to vote in the UK, given that I am not white and have IDs with various stages of hairlength and glasses. I look quite different in every photo.

Btw. this doesn't seem to be much of an issue in Germany, so this looks more like growing pains with people who are not used to IDs.

  • I think the issue here is simply that you two are seeing two different versions of what "filler" means.

"Filler" in terms of anime often refered to original content that was "filled" between the actual adapted content from the manga. This is from a time where some shounen series were running perpetually next to the manga and once caught up had to do something to fill the time. This lead to very loooong series like Dragonball Z where you had to fill an entire episode just with the content of a 20 page chapter and to filler arcs that were often scourned. The issue was, that nothing there could be of any lasting consequence as to not throw a wrench into the actual story developing from the manga.

Now, you use filler as in stuff that apprently fills time in the source, as stuff that doesn't really advance the story and characters in your view. I am not agree with that, but that's another matter.

  • I think the meaning is to not murder, so not "wrongfully" kill. There were quite instances even in the bible where the Israelites did kill "rightfully", starting with wars.

So, as long as you just make it legal, it's alright to genocide people.

  • The Vietnamese people did a while ago, and so did a number of American soldiers who actually fought in the war. Most of the folks still trying to see a conflict are people influenced by propaganda war movies and have never been to Vietnam where people were open to people from all over the world and that includes Americans, and where American ex-soldiers returned to heal their souls and to help to make good on what they did.

E.g. American veterans from the war raised money when the American government still pretended they did nothing wrong in the war and they help in cleaning up e.g. minefields the Americans left behind and that endanger especially children.

And also, the US government already reconciled with Vietnam and it actively helping in matters of China. Japan also have their eyes on it.

  • When it comes to China? Vietnam is very motivated to be there if some funny business with China happens. It's one of the countries constantly dealing with Chinese aggression.

What makes you think that Vietnam wouldn't be there when it counts? It is quite proud of fighting multiple countries that were above its level.

It's not all that strong, but of all things, it's tenacious.

  • I am reading very fast, with about the same retention and lack thereof as regular readers. It's a simple speed advantage with me being neither better nor worse in retention.

I consider this a simple skill that's useful sometimes. e.g. in exams I got a few minutes more than most other people, simply because I read the questions quicker.

But in the end we have all our different talents and aptitudes, it's not a contest. I have a harder time copying what people show me physically than other people do for example. Other might be amazing at that and very quickly pick up something that is shown to them
