  • Therapists love CBT because it is easy and works for most people, but there are absolutely people and situations where it doesn’t just not work but is actively harmful. Like when you’re in a toxic relationship, trying to reframe all the shit making you miserable isn’t going to help you the way that realizing your relationship is toxic and getting out of it will.

And a good therapist will know that and not use it in inappropriate situations… but C’s get degrees, as they say, and when it’s just a high paying job rather than a calling a lot of people are fine writing off those it doesn’t work for as difficult or treatment resistant.

I don’t want to throw the baby out with the bath water or anything, it’s useful in many situations. Therapists just need to be more open to trying other methods as well. The best therapy I ever had was literally just guided talking about what I’ve been through and how it made me feel, no judgement or work sheets (BLEGH). Sometimes that’s what people need.

  • Yup. They’re already trying to define drag as inherently sexual, and will target trans people based on this. Just going outside while trans will be exposing children to sexual material.

  • He had emphysema… they didn’t specifically connect it, but I would be shocked if the fires had no effect on his health. Ash causing strokes and heart failure are some of the specific things they warn about in the air quality warnings. There’s still ash everywhere because it hasn’t rained and they don’t expect it to for at least another week, probably longer. So every time a car goes by in the street it’s kicking up ash that people are breathing in.

  • To add to this, the lyrics during the section where Johnny plays are about four traditional fiddle songs that aren’t played in the song itself: Fire on the Mountain, The House of the Rising Sun, Ida Red, and Granny Will Your Dog Bite. I think in the same way that the lyrics of Tenacious D - Tribute make it clear that Tribute is a representation of the greatest song in the world and not the greatest song itself, the music we hear from Johnny’s section is supposed to represent but not be the music he played to beat the Devil.

  • Neuroscience answer: Dopamine is responsible for (among other things) motivation and the feeling of reward when you do something. People with ADHD have chronically low dopamine levels because they have more dopamine transporters than most people do in their brains, so their brains burn through it quickly.

In practice, people who are unmedicated tend to do whatever they can to try and get a little more dopamine to get them through the day. It’s why smoking, risk taking, illicit drug use, gambling addiction, etc are also correlated with ADHD: all those things give you a dopamine boost.

So when someone is sitting there scrolling through memes on the phone, they’re hunting for the dopamine. The dopamine is almost never at The Task. It’s incredibly frustrating to understand all that and still not really be able to do anything about it until it escalates into an emergency, at which point you don’t really need dopamine to deal with it anymore, now that you have adrenaline. But that’s obviously an unsustainable way to do things on a regular basis.

  • Do those nets I’ve seen deployed against drones in videos not work well in practice? It seems like the least dangerous way to get it to the ground, short of hacking it.

  • Some medical tools look crude even at regular size… they don’t call orthopedics bone carpenters for nothing!

  • I hate it when woke makes the wind gust 100 mph and carry embers for miles, to the extent that a 100 lane road surrounding a building still wouldn’t have stopped it from burning.

  • Telling myself that this is metaphorical and not some boomer taken in by the AI images of the Hollywood sign burning to keep myself from going on an unhinged rant about the exact location of Hollywood, the Hollywood sign, and the fires.

  • The screencap in the article looks pretty dark to me? Is there something that needs to be dark that the example pic doesn't show? Asking as someone that turns everything to dark mode.

  • Always check what the manual says to do. If you don’t have it it’s almost certainly uploaded somewhere.

  • I’d be worried about my cat chipping a tooth again, but she’s also a bit of a dumbass.

  • You can’t read text and view a person’s expression at the same time, but you can watch signing and see the expression (sometimes because it’s part of the sign itself).

For some Deaf people it’s also an issue that they aren’t as fluent in written English as they are in American Sign Language. Text isn’t going to help them if they can’t figure out what it means, or it’s going by too fast to comprehend.

  • Gracias, México… We will try to not let someone fly a drone into the plane like what happened with the Canadians’ 😬

  • You don’t have to accept the racist conservative lie that looting is happening, actually.
