  • You know, I had the shitty thought that at least back before chat communication, a robber baron (or it's equal kind) had to actually hire thugs and henchmen to cause local chaos. Now it's just some tech oligarch with some bots or a paid anonymous service causing disruption.

We really got fucked over on this one. I'm really not sure how America pulls itself out of this one with the state of education and political polarization. The federal part of our government definitely isn't offering up any solutions.

  • I live in an area where there is a monopoly of power supply by one of the worse polluters in American history, in a small area within a county there's an existing co-op power company that was basically grandfathered in because it's been in existence for so long while no other competitors are allowed in the area.

That co-op when I lived in the area was about half the cost of the monopoly company, a relative gets actually paid to be a member because they received their fathers account when he passed away and extra funds are distributed among all the members based on how long they've been with them (a little weird, but at least better than shareholders getting the profit).

You are absolutely right that the electric companies as a whole have failed, they've been allowed to amass too much influence and coverage while squashing any kind of competition. Why electrical needs aren't considered a national resource is mind baffling to me. Our country and citizens way of life would literally grind to a halt without it.

  • couple of things to note:

    1. Not every balcony is southern facing
    2. Most older European homes don't have A/C yet, so electrical costs are more during the winter months (that trend will change though I imagine)
    3. I think the numbers @Valmond@lemmy.world was asking about involved power output, that of course depends on the size of your array, daily/monthly/yearly differences in weather, and all sorts of little nuances that's hard to say without averaging out years worth of data.
  • Seems like phone games are a good match if it makes even %1 of their subscription's stick around. Gives you another excuse to not cancel a subscription that's slowly losing it's value over time.

Jesus, Netflix games.... my mind is still baffled.

  • I realize this is in the actual Steam community so I'll try to be gentle.

Why would they even want competitive advertisements on their product? They don't have official ad intergration buy one of our games, because it would be like amazon advertising ordering and shipping from Walmart valve must remain holy. They get advertisement dollars from the developers on their platform their actual customers, they get a cut of every game sale we don't want last a "last click" compensation, 30% from a successful ad is way more lucrative.

Steam already has plenty of advertisement plastered through it's entire platform you must login, I will default spam you with pop-ups and a store page that will probably crash. They've literally locked you into their advertising model already by forcing you to open their services every time you get an inkling to play a game you've purchased reinforced mental connection and integrated advertising ftw!

It's quite perplexing that Steam has such a huge ravenous fan club on Lemmy. You can take a singular aspect of how they conduct business to any community on here and find examples of how it's given a pass because it's "Steam". I believe it's convinced me that people really don't mind big monopoly companies, just not ones that openly are hostile to it's users (even then some don't mind).

  • Eh, I would argue you're only using the servers to access the content creators data. Youtube is the interface, algorithm, advertisement, comments, etc. If it's just the creators data being accessed with no additional contribution from youtube then I would just treat it as any ol' host server.

  • lol I don't think you're the target demographic if you can't imagine any scenario of this having a good purpose to exist. It's apparently rated by the Department of Defense, definitely has some applications people are interested in. Hell, you could recoup costs on harddrive failures alone over your child's lifetime, just need a reader. Would be a pretty neat present to give someone as well filled like a photo album with personal media/ favorite games/ music/ whatever you want backed up for your kids. People spend a lot of money on multiple backup options so this is just another ace in your deck along with other safeguards.

  • As a kid I was conflicted with the act of making symbols or such things illegal, like @yabai@lemmy.world said above it's all protected so I'm not sure what people wanted arrests for since it wouldn't hold and it's another victim complex for the poor white nationalist to hold or gives cops more leeway for future incidents.

Now as an adult who's lived most of his life in the southern states of America, we really fucked up the Reconstruction Era after the civil war. Things like banning the symbols of hatred drastically reduces the influence it has on vulnerable populace.

Instead, those same sadistic leaders who used humans for fodder got to stay in control and continue spreading their influence and corrupting greed in their domain. These are literal breeding grounds with school age children flying flags of enemy armies that sought to enslave and conquer the country.

Ban it, ban it all to make a statement that "Yes, this shit is unacceptable for a human society".

  • I'm not sure if I share the exact same sentiment as @mint_tamas@lemmy.world, but I honestly did have the thought of, "Who (or For Whom), does this format work for anymore?"

Like I get it, it's classical and all. A call back to a historic time where action was taken (just don't look into it too hard, you'll get disappointed if you learn outside the "Americuh" version). But, now it just feels a little ... disingenuous? Idk the exact word/feeling, maybe because it's been co-opted by so many bad actors or maybe that we're talking about social media websites.

I guess this format gives off a dude's "Love, Live, Laugh" version of righteousness, that even though the message may be correct, it just feels like a weird marketing technique.

  • That is possibly the worse hashtag they could've chosen and just confused me for a second (I know I'm not the brightest, but if I'm average then half of people would take even longer). Idk if the date would've been better, would have screaming matches on the format lol. Just seems like they're trying to setup a franchise instead of focusing on a singular date and informing everyone.

  • I honestly read it both ways. I was confused and looked at your further comments for clarity but people before me didn't have that luxury. What is a Los Angelenos? To a progressive it means anyone residing in the city limits (or once did), to a right-wing definition it would be the registered approved-citizens (blah blah).

This article also centers around the premise of the protests, so by saying "they don't need this right now", it seems you're demeaning the protests and not the ICE actions which have been on-going. It's apparent after reading more, but your first comment wasn't a clear, concise, and easily communicated premise or else you wouldn't see all of the confusion obviously

  • Am I still missing something? This is posted on the instance of .world, wtf are we talking about .ml and politics for? If your instance filters your comments on other instances than that's concerning and something I didn't know.

edit: removed the sarcasm in the hopes someone actually responds to what the problem is.

  • I strangely find enjoyment out of 100% something and I'm not currently the main player (mostly help my partner out in the difficult spots, collect items for upgrades and restock equipment). If it was just me I probably would've lost interest a while ago.

You're absolutely right about the assets. The variety was baffling, we wondered if they were able to import a large library or if considerable time was taken modeling all of it. Would explain a lot for the development, and our hopes is that everything can just be carried over to the next installment so other areas of the game can be concentrated on.

  • I really need someone to explain all the random marxist leninists bogey-man bigotry that happens on this site at some point. Like this is a completely weird-o comment, about a political ideology that's effecting a word filter for possible rascism? and on .world people still label it marxist?!

I'm aware there is deep historical connotations which I haven't spent years researching so I try not to defend or participate but it feels like since people push back against "instance hating", we've gotta pour on any political hatred we could possibly see in the shadows. I'm just gonna assume this is another bad faith comment striking up fear and hatred till I learn otherwise.

  • Fascism? What am I doing about fascism? The same shit I've been doing about racism, discrimination, misogyny, corruption, poverty, and class divide for the past several decades. It's called organize and educate locally. I don't go to an online social media platform and declare people should arm themselves inside of federal buildings. Even the Black Panthers weren't stupid enough to declare such actions, you guys are just bad actors.

  • I do still generally respect and like Jon Stewart, but even I found his piece this week on the Daily Show to be some real weak ass shit.

I'm glad you brought this up because I've noticed the tone change in all the media as well. I don't blame them and understand. They spent months or years screaming and calling out Trump after spending years during his first term pointing out everything wrong.

Everyone's burnt out, you can hear it in the jokes and the incredulous chuckles that come out from segments now. They all tried their best but it didn't change the outcome, that has to make you take a step back. I honestly would probably do the same, you can't keep bombarding people with multiple items a day and expect them not to tune it out eventually. They know it's time to switch to a better long-term strategy than what they've been trying to do calling out all the bullshit with intensity.

  • Is your political stance based off of policy or the individuals that make up the constituents of politicians that claim to be left? I don't understand how some rhetoric from "lefists" have changed your views on policy. Might want to step off of political discourse online if you're being swayed by "personalities", it's exactly the kind of discourse bad-actors are trying to implement.
