  • Ok I've been wanting to ask this and all the articles don't really address it so I'm confused.

The whole rhetoric is that Trump's tariffs will impact the citizens with increased prices and it's really just going to cause economic harm. Like cool, I can understand that. But why is Canada then performing the same action effecting their citizens? I get it's retaliatory, and suppose to expedite (hopefully) a return to normal trade policy. I just don't get why this is the move when it's a bad move in the first place (two wrongs don't make a right and all). Please be gentle, I'm honestly just confused.

  • wha? I thought it was known that walz was actually pretty young (60) compared to how he looks lol. Definitely on the older side of average age for president looking at the stats, but he's 2 years younger than jon stewart and even gavin newsom is 57.

  • Here's my dilemma:

    • Been without cell service since the pandemic (eventually stopped using the smart phone altogether)
    • All my digital needs are satisfied, devices and functionality in every room for every purpose I need
    • Have multiple forms of solid and satisfactory communication channels (don't need a cell number)

I've thought about buying a model I could jailbreak, but again it's just to use a system that's abusive. "Download our app!", "Use our digital coupons!", "Link your phone number!", "Scan our code!", "Let us track your location for your convenience!".

I'm really a niche subgroup though, I already need other devices while at work that a phone wouldn't suffice for. I kinda see more people going this route though. If your transportation has a computer, then what's the endpoint in carrying a phone? If your job requires digital devices, the phone is basically reduced to a large brick of a communication device. I see more and more equipment being specialized and having added communication aspects for more complicated machinery, cell phones are not going to keep up with it in a general sense.

tldr: cell phones are just a fad with an abusive system that will die out one day and be remembered like rotary phones. They're generally subpar for any specific task and are only a place holder till we figure out better systems.

  • I guess I'm just legitimately confused about how to feel about it all. Lemmy is free, signing up on an instance is free, people are posting/creating content for free, moderators are taking care of the space for free. No one's locking in to get "fed" through the entire chain. The arguments about abandoned apps doesn't really compute since plenty paid and advertising friendly apps go under/stop developing further as well (and the entire Lemmy eco-system is free so silly points of "capitalism better"). There's also the crux of "Apps just replace a webpage", they're really not reinventing the wheel here.

But, if people prefer paid apps, if the developers want to construct the apps in that manner, have at it. I do think spreading awareness of what apps are out there is important, and how they operate (this is YSK after all). I also wouldn't spend time in my day coming into defend organizations that want to monetize on open source community projects either.

  • Have you, as a foreigner, been caught up by the American political-polarization bugtm!? Here are a few warning signs that you may be affected.

    • Do you find yourself often injecting "left-wing" or "right-wing" into titles?
    • Do you have a perceived notion that anything negative being said must involve a certain political party?
    • Do you feel the need to bring Trump up in a post that has nothing to do with him?
    • Do you find yourself in the comments blaming "sides" without having read the article or watched the video?
    • Have you found yourself demanding answers or change that's addressed in the post? (he literally brings up Dahl as his first example)

If you suspect that you or a loved one suffer from this syndrome, please turn off the devices and go outside.

  • lol why did you reply with the exact same comment but doubling down on how much of a douche perspective you have? I wouldn't say you hit a nerve, some decent people just tend to call out bigotry when they see it.

"They lie about their goods, it’s almost always straight from China and marked up like 10x." .......so like all the other stores? You're entire shtick is illogical and I don't tend to trust bigots so I doubt you have the experience.

"There really are (only)two type of people". "They lie". "These people". "That demographic". "They often"

This is how you detect bigotry everyone. It's like if I said "Corkyskog probably thinks he's better than others because his brain is broken or got smacked around to often". I'm just assuming his brain is broken with no real facts because of his shit comments

"Corkyskog sucks two types of dicks, shit covered and piss covered" like your demographic might lean that way but to just label you as a "dirty" removed is kinda unfair and also unrealistic, you could just like sucking regular cock.

"Corkyskog is a pompous prick who is probably projecting, often scared and isn't comfortable around people he deems "lesser", is a piece of shit human being the world would be better off without" but I'm just guessing, like the "they often borrow or trade".

  • Eh, I would argue Obama was a better candidate but I don't want that to be the focus. I want better policy and follow-through with a group that will actually speak and engage with constituent dialog. I think even if someone like Sanders would've been elected that the Dems would drag their feet as a party with trying to pass anything effectove.

After the whole Debbie Waserman-Shultz (sp, I know) thing, I've been very interested in the individuals who run the day-to-day operations of the party and if they're legitimately promoting progressive candidates and policy with their procedures. If we don't hold the Dem party responsible for the people running it, not just elected individuals, it's going to remain a power hungry organization only interested in their continued thriving (and whatever fucked up metric they're using to determine that).

  • Holy fuck, it's obvious you don't feel comfortable around people you perceive as "less than you" lol. "illicit script of oxy on them and think bathing is an option" Do we have a Lemmy Uppity Award for fake narratives?

If you actually walked around a flea market, as a human being, you would see it's mostly families and senior citizens. You've selected a few "characters" for your narrative and have grossly stepped into some pompous position of enlightenment. Anyone that loves cheap electronics to tinker with absolutely gets thrilled to go to a flea market with some disposable income.

It takes a special kind of drug induced "sketchy" person to wake up at 6am on a saturday to try and make some income, damn shame there's people like you out there that wouldn't give the location a chance but will walk into any corporate store without a thought to "all the shady, drug ladened CEO's you don't want to get into a van with". But you can't see them so I suppose that might make it better for you.

  • I"m horrible with names of programs and mess with a lot of junk comps switching out OS's and just tinkering around so I'm always using crazy utility programs. BalenaEtcher is used in a lot of tutorials or guides for installations, I think recently both Elementary OS and even Ubuntu had instructions pointing towards BalenaEtcher.

I never thought it was a great program, it was finicky to use and errors out quickly multiple times. Looking back I saw the signs, weird new program being promoted above other "well established" burn programs, ads, and now scrolling down their webpage it's just a bunch of promotional subscription bullshit. I think I just threw up in my mouth a little bit looking at the "balenacloud" and "balenasense", like if they're collecting your data through etcher then all of that shit is probably compromised. Another fucking google wannabe corp.

  • I thought the entire SNL50 shit was kinda gross when watching a few segments of it. Every skit (especially the adam sandler song), had references to "Lauren's" horrible work ethic and how much of a psychological shit storm working on that show is.

    • Multiple references to Norm Mcdonald being fired for speaking out about OJ
    • the loss of members (some from drug use because of the industry and the show they're now continuing to promote).
    • turmoil and treatment of the staff and writers
    • obvious racial bias, especially for the weekend update teams in the past

Like it just kept going on and on with little jokes telling how much of a crap place it is, then everyone smiles and says, "Thank you Lauren!!" I honestly doubt if George Carlin was alive, that they would've asked him to come back and host (he was the first host).

If this would've been the last show, like they all decided to hang up the towel. Then sure, treat it like graduating from a crappy ass highschool you're just so thrilled to be out of, you can enjoy the last day. But all the appearances and references just reminded me of how shitty SNL has really been over the decades. Sure some great writers and performers, but those have been squeezed and mutilated out of creative individuals for decades for our entertainment.

I really have nothing to say about the "outrage from conservatives" lol, that just feels like clickbait for every side.

  • how the fuck are we near 10 years later and I'm just now seeing what should've been the DNC's campaign motto from the start? People, politicians, and pundits can argue about "flavors of fascism" till the cows come home, but the hatred is plain for anyone to see.

  • I think the analogy will hold only because the problems you've presented should get worked out over time. I feel the same with how fediverse links work and how it interacts with your Lemmy account (like it's super easy to link a fediverse comment/post, just a little harder to get from your account instance to that link where you can interact with it).

My first Lemmy account was on a little instance where I had to go through subscribing, like you said, for those instance feeds to pop up. I also see that as just another wrinkle that will be ironed out over time, as the setting up and hosting of instances becomes more mainstream (well from at least it's current state).

  • @JuxtaposedJaguar@lemmy.ml commented above with a good experience of why it's a crappy idea (I was thinking a randomzier would be good too.

I just clicked the first option it showed, which (for me) was a non-English instance. The second option was that LGBT-focused instance that defederated with lemmy.world a few months ago. Of course I didn’t know anything about either community so I just picked randomly.

I could see that happening a lot. I've messed with other randomizing systems and sometimes you forget how many niche or non matching picks can pop up when you really look at it. Even a 10% match with language barriers wouldn't be good for a reliable system of placement.

I also don't like the "what harry potter house" do you belong to quiz stuff or anything that asks to crawl or input your data (no thank you). Definitely more complicated than I thought.

  • Oh, I was hoping more for an article or a statement made by a person of authority that was saying "The procedure was done according to this report by our intelligence officials and thus we conduct ourselves this way" kinda link. I mean what you're saying sounds plausible but that link from 2015 even says it was just social media kinda data if anything was actually real to begin with (nobody would confirm the validity, etc). I could see them using the scare tactics, just would like to see someone actually stating what the situation is.

  • I question that because I remembered reading articles that had discussions with the photographer from the before times. Alas, the internet is dead and every search result for Eugeny Hramenkov is either copy/pasted AI mouth gargle or articles talking about how "Elon Musk used the meme!!" (fucking christ I wouldn't put it past the dude that all these sites are his own promotional shit). It's so completely sad to have had the internet information age for just a small hopeful glimpse before it all came completely crumbling down.

  • I get what you're saying, if this was a hollywood "Carry-on" kinda movies. But, something doesn't pass the smell test.

Why would a gang target a service member performing a deportation flight to another country? What benefit could they receive from being exposed going after a private who's just guard duty on a plane? If it's just a, "there's no benefit, they're just evil and target people for fun" I would need some actual evidence of something like this being done and the procedures put into place after to just trust any ol' internet stranger proclaiming subject knowledge.
