  • I was forced to realise before covid, that my family is dysfunctional and delusional. This obviously extends to family events such as Xmas.

I lost interest many years ago in the whole theatrics of it, it's a capitalist holiday and nothing more. My family touts that "it's about the thought and the people" when in actuality it's always been about the gifts (and by extension, money spent).

With that said, covid caused a pause in a lot of said family relations, and that was the straw that broke the (camel's) back. Most of my family is now rarely in contact, and Xmas as a family event finally bit the dust.

I'm on top of the world, and there's still money in my wallet, as well as less familial bullshit.

So yeah, I'll take it as a win.

  • This is what I did, I've been using windows since 98.

I am now on Linux Mint full time, it had it's teething issues (also not my first distro) but all it took was some DDGing and persistence. I actively cringe when I'm forced to boot into windows for something now.

As I've said in previous comments, it's absolutely worth the effort, spend some time on different distributions, every distro is a little different. On this note, absorb as many suggestions from the Lemmings as possible, regarding Linux and FOSS they really know their shit.

Basically, tread your own path, ask for help if you need it and do it at your own pace, in your own direction. Everyone's needs are different, the distro list is as long as it is for a reason.

You really do just need to fuck around to find out (what you like).

  • There are examples of exactly this occuring regarding renewables, there are community funded battery/solar farms here in Aus.

If it can be done on that scale, it can definitely be scaled up, it's just a matter of willingness of the community.

  • The majority of humanities problems are caused by shit government policy and billionaires' addiction to pollution and making line go up.

Overpopulation is a part of the issue, but pales in comparison to the rich, corps and corrupt politicians.

E: you're bang on about the existential dread being part of it, if folks are poor or have little going for them, the likelihood of having kids drops significantly.

  • I nearly got Monster Hunter: Rise, but then just played some MH: World again and the urge disappeared.

At this rate I'll be waiting for the next sale too, most games I had my eye on either got no discount or <20%.

If I hadn't already bought Prey the other week I'd be buying that.

  • I've had similar thoughts and sentiments in my (short) Linux journey, my only advice is to distro-hop a bit as many Lemmings preach, find your fit (in VM/live mode or separate machine) and dive right in.

Side effects may include hair loss in early introduction, stick with it, it's worth it.

  • 100% on the TLDR there, I'll edit as such, that comment is open source ;)

I've been running Ubuntu on a separate machine for a little while now, and it works great, just not a good fit for me.

I'm happy to say within 2 weeks of my dual boot I'm already on mint 90% of the time. It just fucking works. (Without waking me up at 2-4am sending the fans to mach 7 for a damn windows update).

  • I've been experiencing Windows' degredation since 98/XP, it's been an extremely smooth transition from Windows 10 to Linux Mint.

Still working out the kinks with my game library but apart from new user errors it's worked flawlessly (unlike Win10).

Thank you Lemmings for showing me to the light!

Edit/TLDR: it's kinda like windows, but functional and user control is king.
