  • You Americans being so dismissive of other people is exactly how this happened in the first place.

Remember when people were calling out how gender affirming care policies had gone too far and those people were written off as bigots? Then it turned out that a bunch of ideologues had hijacked the processes in several countries and were issuing puberty blockers and hormones with barely any consultation, then suppressed evidence that unchecked use of puberty blockers and hormones was actively harming people?

Remember when it turned out that droplet theory was bullshit and cloth masks don't actually block COVID but we kept trucking along like they did?

Remember when Democrats told people facing hard times that the economy was doing great, even as the number of homeless was shooting up and inflation was going wild?

These and others are the kinds of lies that make people lose trust in authorities. Doubling down on them only made it worse. And before someone chimes in with a list of Republican / right-wing versions of this: yes I know they do the same thing, but telling people that as if that makes what "your side" did any better is stupid. The idea is to tell them about the lies on both sides so that they realize you're not just another tribal moron. Tell the truth, gain some trust, and maybe you'll see you share more in common than you've been lead to believe.

  • For Canadian Right to Repair advocates: CanRepair is a brand new advocacy group started by R2R advocates from all over the country. The first Annual General Meeting is on March 25. Sign up to be a member and go to the AGM!

  • My washing machine has a version of this. When on a support call you can hold your phone close to the washer and the phone microphone will pick up ultrasound error codes from the machine.

You have to be pretty close for this to work though.

  • I had a kid and was working at the office 5 days a week during COVID so my experience wasn't nearly as peaceful lol. But I could see how much some people thrived from it and I hate so much that our societies have taken that back from them.

  • Here in Canada we had a similar system and I had friends on CERB for some time. Many of them didn't know what to do with themselves. The ones who took it well were already accustomed to finding their own fun in the world, and did everything from DIY renovations to prototyping products they want to sell.

I wouldn't know personally, I was working the whole time. Longest I've been off for was 3 months and I was more concerned with survival than keeping busy. But I'd like to think I have a lot of projects to work on. I'd love to move out of the suburbs into the country proper and have a workshop. Making custom furniture and electronics is so fun but I barely have time for it.

  • AtkinsRéalis (known as SNC-Lavalin at the time) is a Canadian construction company that was at the centre of a huge scandal in Canada. They were caught bribing the son of Libian dictator Gaddafi to get a contract to build a prison, allegedly for political prisoners.

While the Justice Minister was having this company prosecuted, the Prime Minister (Justin Trudeau) demanded that she give AtkinsRéalis a slap on the wrist and a deferred prosecution agreement. When she refused, she was driven from her position.

Canada's government has a history of propping up bad actors like this, and goes out of their way to support several oligopolies that run significant chunks of the Canadian market. Bell/Rogers/Telus own most of Canada's mobile and internet offerings, Loblaws/Sobeys/Metro own most of Canada's grocery stores, much of Canada's produce and meat are controlled by cartels, etc.. The maple syrup cartel is very powerful and wealthy and yes you're reading that right, there is a maple syrup cartel and even a maple syrup black market.

One special mention goes out to the Canadian Real Estate industry, which is full of actual crooks all over the place and just disgusting. Did you know in Canada it is legal for a real estate agent to represent both sides of a purchase? Agents also will refuse to work with any of the bargain agencies that charge less than the standard 2.5% commission, basically locking them out of the industry. This crap is part of why housing prices have bubbled so hard, and together with price fixing by landlords they have managed to keep Canadian housing prices at levels so stupid homelessness has increased several times over.

Canadian people are often too fixated on not being seen to be a problem, what some call "politeness", to the point they won't even stand up for themselves. That unwillingness to protest or try to change things has allowed this to happen for a very long time. Because of this awful "politeness" many Canadians are even cheering on new laws limiting union action.

tl;dr Canada is a banana republic and Canadians are cucked

  • If a user wishes to know more about why an instance is defederated, then they should just make a post asking about it, or they should dm the admins.

I think the obvious counterargument is that being transparent-by-default increases trust and cohesion. I for one would be more willing to support an instance that is transparent in this way. Understandably there is an increased burden here and if it's a problem I think a few users would have some suggestions about how to handle it.

  • The bigger issue is people thinking that voting is the only way to influence anything. Reality is that it is the absolute bare minimum you can and should do. People need to be getting involved in their local communities, their unions, the campaigns for local politicians... you cannot change the whole country and you need to stop trying. Change your immediate area, and let those changes become the new base voters are starting from when making decisions.

  • Join and/or fund Right to Repair advocacy organizations people. For my fellow Canadians: check out CanRepair, they are currently registering members and will have their first ever AGM March 18
