  • There's a jack rackam video on japan in wwii that's has a relevant idea here. War isn't a game where you run out the clock and declare a winner. Negotiating peace is a whole at in of itself. Something like that. More weapons, more negotiating power. Negotiations also aren't just win/lose, and they require more than one party. I think russia isn't planning on accepting the current lines either.

  • I hope you're willing to learn because that is historically incorrect. The first nation to abolish slavery was Hati around a decade before the first European country (Denmark). That is if we are talking abolish and keep abolished in all territories controlled. Persia is possibly the first country recorded to have used slaves but they would have periods of "abolishment" which were probably good for causing slave revolts in new areas they were thinking of conquering. Arguably the first country to have and to abolish slavery.

  • I don't remember the call to get rid of uncle Ben though. It feels like at best the company was trying to get out ahead of it, at worst they wanted to stop paying his family residuals and had an excuse.

  • A trump judge threw it out claiming they had no standing because the commission had formed. This is like saying that you don't have standing when someone public domains your car because it's theirs now. It shows you what kind of people he put on the bench. He's probably never heard of a chilling effect.

  • That is not against the decision unless this is a different one than on the 22nd. I don't belive the decision said new razor wire couldn't be placed. It said that they couldn't stop the federal government from cutting through it to do their job on the otherside. Texas wanted to block the border patrol from doing their job physically and legally then complain that they weren't doing their job. There seems to be another issue here about Florida law and using their guard outside Florida, but that wasn't the issue of the decision I was thinking of.

  • I was using jeroba unlogged in for several months, which defaults to lemmy ml. I logged in a couple of weeks ago which defaults to lemmy world which I'm guessing defederated those two so I haven't had my bid pressure go up from seeing all the hypocrisy. I know it may give me a view from a walled garden, but technically every lemmy instance is more or less a walled garden. If I understand it right even an instance that tries to federated everything will be one, albeit one that expands their walls to the edge whenever possible.

  • I would assume that being poorer both limits their voice when raising issues and makes their ability to leave harder. It sounds like the non white minorities are major victims and hit with a double whammy here. I suppose that happens a lot in history but I agree that it should be pointed out here as well.
