Not knowing anything about the source material, I agree with rem. I think the tells here are the eyes (the two are fairly consistent, but generative models tend to make them weirdly distinct from each other if they're even drawn well in the first place) and the keyboard (haven't seen a generated one that good yet).
I mean, you weren't really wrong about them catching on. Usage by everyday people is vanishingly rare and it's certainly not trending in a positive direction. They're just... worth a lot now... for some reason.
Probably also doesn't hurt that the US is generally far more reliant on driving to get anywhere. There's a higher tolerance for doing it dangerously since there's no alternative
