  • Some of the autoststems are dead ends too that hang up on you. When i run into those I've started just telling them I have a billing issue or that I need to purchase some additional product from them. The phone system will push you to a person really fast if they believe you're buying something. Then the sales person can transfer you to the department you want to talk to rather than trying to navigate the maze of dead ends in some systems.

  • Doesn't that one also present a problem for the popular knitting theory? Aren't the holes supposed to show the finger size or something? (I'm not positive, as a knitter this seems really unusual for knitting).

  • I always assumed they were for a game. Why have a different face on most of the sides if they werent some sort of dice like game piece?

Honestly though I'm glad archeologists went with "mittens" rather than their old standby "human sacrificing sex cult worship".

    Edit: fuck spelling is hard

  • I don't understand what kind of magic bullet people think a constructive discharge lawsuit is or what kind of powerful uno reverse card it would be. Winning a constructive discharge lawsuit is basically being legally fired instead of quiting...they'd probably get less from that lawsuit (not even counting the time and legal fees) than if they just accepted Apples package. What is a constructive discharge lawsuit supposed to do here?

  • If they are offering a relocation package, and it sounds like they are, then this likely doesn't fall under constructive discharge. Also in CA a constructive discharge lawsuit often only makes you entitled to the same benefits as if you were fired (i.e. severance and unemployment). These guys aren't being fired for cause so they still qualify for unemployment and the severance deal Apples offering is probably already worth more than many would get in a lawsuit. A lawsuits not gonna force Apple to move the office back.

I don't know why everyone always jumps straight to "constructive discharge" and "this must be illegal". Guys, we live in a legal hellscape, Apple may be being shitty but they aren't doing anything illegal.

  • Mass has a lot of employee protections that other states dont but this is also really company dependant. Some big companies also dont fight unemployment claims, ever. I was HR at both a large and small company. The small company fought everything the large company had a policy of never fighting an HR claim no matter how egregious the firing cause. They felt it wasn't Wirth the cost of defending a potential suit. So this is heavily dependent on state and company. Sometimes also on the HR, I always tried to find a way not to contest but other HRs may not have put that much work into pushing back if they were told to contest it.

Also references are often just dates of hire and title in most companies. But that's totally separate from unemployment reaching out to HR Unemployment has a series of official questions you have to answer and one of them is "are you contesting this claim". You're friends companies may just be saying "no".

  • I worked in HR for a while and 80% of the job was telling managers/execs "you can't do that to an employee". It was defending the employee, arguing for better programs, planning events for employees/associates/team members. I paid for a Christmas event out of my own pocket one year because I was told there was no funding. I never got badmouthed or trashed by a manager. But after fighting everyday for associates it was really disheartening to see them say stuff like the person youre replying too. It's one reason people who aren't corporate shills get out of HR. You spend your day advocating for people and they turn around and spit in your face. After awhile you just ask yourself why am I turning myself inside out for these people who hate me?

  • So this is a trope called women in refrigerators. Basically a women in the Protagonists life is killed or attacked in some way in order to give the Male lead the initiative to do something. Once you notice it you'll see it everywhere. Action movies are the worst about it.

  • I pay $5 a year for dropout even though I don't watch all of their content enough to probably warrant it some months. I tend to binge D20 and Um, actually mostly. But they're a good company, making good content, and trying not to exploit anyone in the process. We need more of that and I've been lucky enough I can afford the $5 a month sub.

  • This is true in office work but less automated professions may be closer to 50/50 still. It is true though that non-office work environments are also less likely to care about writing than reading comprehension though.

  • The Zap Brannigan approach has long been a Russian strategy. It's essentially what their plan was in WW1, Putins just doing a shitty remix.

Also Iknow this isn't the point but whoever drew that image of knitting has no idea how knitting works.

  • I knew a guy who worked in wallpaper, he insisted that sales would stay up after 2020 because this was the "new normal"...would not listen to anyone who asked him what would happen when the post-pandemic housing market slowed and the government stimulus checks dried up...he couldn't even conceive of a market turn, this guy was teaching night classes to college students...

  • I'm just here to plug for Um, Actually. If anyone wants to see pedantry be funny it's a great show. It's mostly behind a pay wall at Dropout.tv (formerly collegehumor) but if you like DnD actual play, whose line is it anyway, or game shows it's well worth the $5 a month to support a streaming service that isn't evil and makes great content.

  • I've found that any project my Ryobi isn't suited for is a project I would have opted to hire a professional anyway. 99% of people can get away with Ryobi 99% of the time. That remaining 1% really isn't worth the increased price from brands like Dewalt.

  • You may want to talk to your doctor. That frequency is not a common issue and there may be something going on with your diet or stomach. It's not uncommon for people to go far longer than 1 highschool class without farting and most farts don't smell. If all your farts smell that likely means somethings wrong with your diet or stomach.

  • The young population is really high in Gaza too. You often see that with poor nations.

Not to bang on about this but, how are you building the infrastructure to get reliable internet (that the men won't let women access anyway) to remote afghan villages that don't even have running water?

I think you're wildly under estimating the control men have over women there. You also may be under the impression it's just the government trying to control and crush these women, it's not. The average man in Afghanistan is not only complicit but active in subjugating Afghani women. This isn't about lack of access to education, it's about lack of personhood and autonomy for women. Afghanistan has education, women just aren't allowed to be educated.

Edit: so I just realized you're probably really young given the solutions you've proposed. (I reread and suggesting to send a full family/guardian can only be someone young or a troll.) I apologize if I'm coming off really harsh. The reality is just that men are actively trying to subjugate/control/own/deny basic human rights to women in some of these countries and your comments completely missing that got under my skin. My apologies.
