And they’re openly malicious about it. It’s a little different, but the extremists on the court are unashamedly against substantive due process. Thomas and Alito are on record saying that death row inmates deserve to be killed by the state if they misfiled appeal paperwork or want to make a defective counsel defense (an otherwise perfectly legitimate defense), even if it is clear that new evidence would be raised that might prove their innocence.
You deserve to die, innocent person, because the court just doesn’t feel like figuring out the facts. Doesn’t get much more evil than that, but I’m sure they’ll try to outdo themselves.
This is such a great description, and captures why I love DS9 so much. I think the fact that it doesn’t really take place in the Federation, and that the overarching plot is moved along by external forces from an entirely different quadrant, gives it the space to thoughtfully explore the depths of a well-intentioned yet exclusionary post-scarcity utopia from a darker perspective. Especially how the Federation’s ideals interact with the aftermath of a very familiar military occupation on Bajor at the same time as it stokes an external threat from an unfamiliar ‘other’ through the Dominion/Founders. And all of that is accomplished through some of the best character development of any show I’ve seen.
Based on all the weird downvotes in this thread, it seems Lemmy might be losing its taste for subtlety.
You are absolutely right that most are a bunch of self-serving asshats. In my experience, the sign of a mature adult is someone who can admit when they’re wrong and do the right thing even when it’s less convenient than doing the wrong thing. Dems do the wrong thing a lot, and calling them out on it is one of the few ways we can force change. They also do the right thing way more often than the GOP. Dem’s corruption often seems less flagrant than the GOP’s because they couch it in neoliberal pro-business language. It’s still corruption, and the GOP is still way worse. Both things can be true.
His trip to Argentina during the 1978 World Cup leaves no doubt regarding his support for these dictatorships,” said Miriam Lewin, a survivor of the ESMA death camp that was close by the River stadium where Kissinger attended matches. “I could hear the cheering when goals were scored, from inside the concentration camp.”
This makes me nauseous, especially because I personally understand the generational trauma of concentration camps, forced labor, and mass killing. Of all people, he should have too.
“I don’t see why we need to stand by and watch a country go communist due to the irresponsibility of its people,” he said. “The issues are much too important for the Chilean voters to be left to decide for themselves.”
Frankly this makes that incredibly ugly piece of hardware look really cool. I agree though, whoever thinks this is a bad thing definitely shouldn’t have kids.
I’m convinced there’s an attractiveness requirement for Mormon women who knock on doors. Every year or so, two incredibly good-looking women knock on my door to do their thing. It probably makes me the asshole, but I feel slightly more guilty closing my door in their faces than I would if they weren’t so hot. I give them my attention and only close the door after politely repeating “no thanks, I’m not interested in your joy” at least three times. I am a Jew after all—we love our thrice denials.
Seriously, it’s everywhere these days, and is so hard to stomach.
“Who is actually producing the carbon and the pollution in the world? It is the consumers of our oil.” -a big dumb idiot quoted in the article.
That’s such an absurd way of looking at things. Tobacco, guns, highly-addictive pharmaceuticals, alcohol, etc. etc. have all been on the wrong side of history with this kind of blame-the-consumer deflection.
It’s hilarious that it needs to be said, but: I can’t consume something if you don’t produce it.
Any government having this amount of data is bad, no doubt, but it may be scarier to me that any individual could use it for their own reasons. Imagine the devastation this could enable in the hands of a violent white supremacist, for example. Even a super-stupid one. I mean, any building with an address where communities gather is a nexus for identifying whole groups of people. Follow the dots home from a mosque or synagogue, and we’ve got ourselves a problem that I don’t know how we solve right now. I hope the widespread hate isn't as bad as it feels.
Ah that’s useful info, thanks! I’ve lived in the same apartment for as long as I’ve been using the litter, so it’s totally possible that I’ve just gotten lucky with my particular plumbing. Now that I know there could be problems for my neighbors, I’ll ask my landlord to see if he’s noticed any issues over the years.
Totally fair. The smoldering dumpster fire is very hard to watch. Actually I’ve walked past many an actual dumpster fire, and they’re much easier to stomach than the current state of things in the US.
I think she has more social capital now than ever before. She’s a well-respected activist working on important issues. Her willingness to speak openly and honestly about her experience, as well as her willingness to joke about it, and frankly to be in the public spotlight at all after what the media did to her, is downright inspiring.
I recommend checking out some interviews she’s done over the last few years. She has a uniquely relatable way of discussing huge societal issues. I’m genuinely impressed any time I hear her talk.
Totally forgot about this game! I messed around with it for a few hours a couple years ago, but the lack of a real narrative turned me off. Was definitely a fun power trip though!
It’s also fully flushable, since it’s just corn. I can’t stress how amazingly convenient that is. I scoop and toss the solids and clumps straight into the toilet, add my own waste if necessary, and flush. No heavy garbage bags filled with gross stinky clay. Never had an issue with plumbing since the clumps break up straight away on contact with the water. I’ve been using it for about a decade. Imo this is one product that lives up to its stupid name.
I want a third person single player Superman game, where Superman is actually as OP as he should be. No squish whatsoever unless kryptonite is involved (and kryptonite would have to be very rare). Because he’d be un-killable and have the edge in almost every situation, the game would have to be pretty creative in order to keep it challenging. And no, I don’t want a Clark Kent journalist simulator. I want to have full 3D flight, invulnerability, super-speed, and everything else. The whole shebang. With some creative storytelling and game mechanics, this could be so awesome.
Yup. Every single passenger, except for babies and small children (they’ll obviously always act out, and we just have to suck that up), should be required to be on their best behavior, somehow. I like the idea of pretending you’re in a library. Someone should hang up those Shhh! signs everywhere. Maybe a passenger rating system or something, like two strikes making a scene and you’re banned for 5 years? Dunno, there’s gotta be a way.
So many travelers get incredibly frustrated and worked up by standard crap that just normally happens when you try to organize thousands of people doing one thing in a shared space. Justified frustration much of the time, because the service sucks more often than not, but taking that frustration out on underpaid staff is never okay, and should be punished with real consequences.
It’s a transparently self-serving, irrational, and counterproductive decision to run again as a third party candidate. It just exposes her arrogance and lack of actual consideration for the health of the country. If she thought she could realistically win, then she should try to primary Biden on the Democratic ticket. Anything else is actively destructive. So disappointing.
This is my go-to as well. They’re expensive, but the design is well worth it imo. They’re so damn sleek! They have amazing heat retention, and I love the little splash guard they include. I’ve only used the standard lid, but I’d like to try the slide one at some point.
I just can’t stress enough how sexy this thing is. It’s the only Fellow product I can justify splurging on.
