  • And some states, ahem…Nebraska…don’t believe in the welfare of their residents, so they rejected millions of federal dollars that would have gone to feeding hungry children.

Insert tired quote about the absurd hypocrisy of right wingers only loving children when they’re fetuses. And even then….

  • This article is already so short, this summary really doesn’t help anyone. In fact it’s pretty confusing the way it puts quote after quote without attribution.

Maybe I’m the only one, but I hate these bots. I really think they should be disabled, at least for articles 500 words or less.

  • Geez, even the judge who wrote this facially absurd ruling knows it’s not right.

“It somewhat defies common sense to find the law permits a candidate to run for two offices during the same election”

So we really don’t care about common sense anymore, do we? It’s blatantly obvious that if Democrats and Republicans can’t run for more than one office at a time, then obviously Independents can’t either.

If any non-affiliated person can do this, then what’s to stop some asshole from running for every single office in their state in the hopes that they get elected to at least one? What if they get elected to more than one position? Do they get to choose which one they take? What happens to the positions they don’t choose to fill? It just doesn’t make any goddamn sense.

  • This Miles O’Brien is actually a solid science reporter for PBS. I’ve watched him on and off for years. A while back he lost his arm in some kind of freak accident, and ended up using the experience to explore prosthetics and bionics.

Solid dude, but what else would you expect with a name like that?

  • Frankly, writing this in Hebrew is a bit shitty. Most Jews in the world don’t live in Israel, and while Jews outside of Israel might learn to read Hebrew when they’re young, most can’t actually understand its modern spoken version. So while I can see how someone might think releasing an apology in Hebrew might show solidarity with the Jews, it kind of does the opposite, at least for me.

Actions speak louder than words in a foreign language.

  • Oh this man cries, often. And this man thinks it’s completely natural, acceptable, and often enjoyable.

  • I read this article when it was written in 2014, and it was the thing that made me delete my account. I was completely disgusted. I remember telling a friend about it the same day I read it, and they didn’t believe me, thought I was peddling a conspiracy theory, to the point that I had to find the article again to be sure I hadn’t imagined it. As far as I know, there were no consequences and no one was held accountable.

  • Damn that was hard to read, thanks for sharing. I knew Scalia was a POS, but wow.

the Court ruled that that the state did not have a special obligation to protect a citizen against harms it did not create.

What a ridiculous way of thinking.

  • This incident actually does a great job of illustrating one of the many problems with policing in America. The cops do something that on its face, to literally anyone watching, is incredibly embarrassing, and that any reasonable person would say was obviously the fault of the police. Instead of profusely apologizing and immediately determining how to make restitution, they turn it around and dehumanize and arrest the victim. They’re so suspicious, afraid, and spiteful of the people they are sworn to protect, that taking the least bit of personal responsibility and showing genuine respect for anyone but themselves is seen as weakness, when in fact it would be the ultimate show of strength to admit when they’ve done something wrong and to immediately try to make it right.

And they wonder why no one trusts them. Respect breeds respect. Show me genuine respect, and I’ll show it right back to you. That’s how human relationships work. But crash into my business with your patrol car, shoot my dog during a no-knock raid on the wrong address, detain me without trial in inhumane and tortuous conditions, pull over every single one of my black friends for literally nothing, all without due process or cause, and you don’t deserve my respect. You deserve my unfiltered rage, and that’s what you’ll continue to get until you show us some goddamn decency. Or quit. Just fucking quit. No one is forcing you to be a cop.

  • It's so exhausting, but this is the real antisemitism. When you retaliate against Jews for expressing our political opinions, you're the ones being antisemitic, not the Jews speaking our minds.

It's a damn shame that so many people are incapable of grasping that Jews can be just as critical of the actions of a foreign government as anyone else. In fact, it is antisemitic to assert that Jews must adhere to some shared belief that doesn't reflect our reality or values. When Israel acts like a monstrous murderer, this Jew will always call it out.

  • Just let me recalibrate the deflector to emit an anti-matter pulse on a rotating frequency and…….found it! It’s 100 meters off the port bow.

  • I’d even go one step further and say they don’t believe in individual freedom for women. This goes way beyond simply reproductive freedom, especially with how vindictive and amoral Paxton is acting. If Cox doesn’t get an abortion, she could die along with the fetus (which will die no matter what). She might also lose her ability to have children in the future. And that’s on top of all this absurd attention she’s getting for something that is no one else’s business.

I’m of the belief that women should be able to do whatever the fuck they want with their own bodies. And I do mean anything. My or anyone else’s opinion (other than their doctor), shouldn’t count for shit.

You’re right, this is 100% about power.

  • Yeah, I know what they were trying to say. The whole thing reads like a middle school research essay though, it's completely full of errors and very strange word choice. That wasn't even the only error in that one sentence I quoted. Regardless, it's a very cool topic, just the source (the website, not the research) is a bit questionable.

Granted, I'm usually too critical this early in the morning.

  • This is really cool, but I’m not so sure about the source.

Choice quote: “Previously, scientists used the size of the animal to determine their length.”

  • TerraCopy and FreeCommander. Fuck Windows Explorer.

  • Thanks for sharing! That was a moving and insightful piece.

This is my favorite quote, which really says it all:

I asked my eldest—now a teenager—what he remembers from his experience in first grade. He chuckled wryly. “I learned that some Jewish Israelis are nice and some are jerks, and some Palestinian kids are nice and some are jerks.”

  • The longer this goes on, the more danger we're all in, both Jews and Muslims. The longer this goes on, the more anti-semitism and islamophobia will become normalized, because the whole world will have somewhere to point and say "those people did bad things, so they must all be bad everywhere."

The longer this goes on, the more our speech will be limited to avoid angering the moneyed class, the evangelical rapture cults, and the arms industry. The voices that matter most will be harder to hear because they'll be drowned out by raw hatred coming from those who don't understand the history of the region or its people.

We need to tone down the zealous rhetoric, back away from unconditional support of unreliable regimes, and remember that empathy is one of the most powerful and useful emotions, if we all allow ourselves to feel it.

  • “Testing” for allergies or nutritional deficiencies by holding a sample up to your forehead and then applying downward pressure to your outstretched arms to “determine” sensitivity. Weird stuff like that.

Edit: I believe it’s called Applied Kinesiology, but that just makes it sound legit. Which it’s not.

  • Indeed. I’ve got a chiropractor in my family, and I actively avoid talking to them about their work because I’ve always been convinced that it causes more harm than good. I think they finally got the hint after the 1000th time I refused their offer of an adjustment. They do some genuinely bizarre stuff beyond the standard adjustments, and talk about it like it’s proven science.
