  • It seems like there is disagreement within NASA whether it is safe for the astronauts to return on Starliner or not.

Boeing engineers did test on the ground to try to replicate the issue that is occuring on the thrusters. They found thqt the issue isndue to a Teflon seals bulging but they don't understand precisely why is the seal buldging and when it occurs.

However they feel confident enough that the problem would not happen on the way back to earth. Some people are NASA are not as confident as they are and would like to know the precise cause of the bulging.

About the software: there is a capability in the software for the capsule to undock autonomously.

However it would means resurrecting parameters that have not been used and updated since 2022, there is some reconfiguration needed and testing to make sure it still does what is needed despite the different hardware and software change that happened since then.

It is really not looking good for Boeing right now and I don't know if the Starliner program will survive this accident.

  • Not anymore, it was designed for 7 people in 2 seat rows using propulsive landing.

During development they switched to parachute instead of propulsive landing, since parachute can be rougher they had to lean the seat more back for the astronauts to be able to handle more G's.

In this lean back position there is not enough space for a second row of seats anymore

  • Applied to a real situation I've been through :

    • my pool 4.5m wide, 9m long and 1.5m deep, the current level of salt is 2.5g/l and a bag of salt weight 20kg. How many bags of salt do I need to bring the level to 3g/l ?
    • OR: my pool 14'9" wide, 29'6" long and 5' deep, the current level of salt is 2500ppm and a bag of salt weights 40lbs. How many bags of salt do I need to bring the level to 3000ppm ?

The answer to one is 1.5 bag, the answer to the other one is "fuck that, I'm getting 8 bags at the store and it should be good enough"

  • I love my steel bike, it's great on the road, on gravel or for a quick grocery shop.

I'm not gonna win any competition with it but it is honestly such a fun bike.

And with care it should last forever.

  • I think I'm on an accepting phase too.

I've been through a lot personally and emotionally since I started reading about collapse 9 years ago.

I had a look at this publication a few years ago, it put me in a rough place for a few days.

Recalibration of limits to growth: An update of the World3 model

Humanity will survive I'm certain of it, however our thermo industrial civilization will not and most of the people currently living in the planet will not.

It will happen whatever I personally do.

The best I can do now is to find ways to have the happiest life I can using as little ressources as possible for my family, my community (neighbors, friends ...) and me. It's a process that forces us to reassess a lot of things we were doing but it is fascinating.

Practically it means finding ways to lower our monthly expenses, try to consume local as much as possible and learning a lot of new techniques..

  • In 1988 already Jacques Chirac promised that in a few years everyone will be able to swim in the Seine.

It did not happened but it shows that there is already decades of work and investments to clean the river and it shows, the Seine is much cleaner today than few decades ago.

It's still not perfect but it's getting there slowly and the Olympics gave a boost to it.

  • Children of Hurin is an interesting read. Reading the Silmarillion felt a bit like a chore to me but Children of Hurin is well put together as a story that hold up on his own.

PS: For those that don't know Children of Hurin is part of the Silmarillion. J.R.R Tolkien's son (Christopher Tolkien) took this story, filled up the blank using his dad notes to turn this story into a full novel.

  • Yes, A dim bulb is extremely inefficient, it will use a lot of electricity for a very small amount of light.

On the other hand you can make very efficient lightbulb that will be very bright for a small amount of electricity but last only for a few minutes.

The 1000 hours limits is a nice middle ground.

  • You are getting downvoted because it sound to absurd for France. I would have have downvoted you few years ago but unfortunately this is really what is happening right now.

In this case the dangerous far-left extremist they arrested was just a guy who was planning a graffiti. The "far left literature" was a sociology manual because he is a student.

In the mean time the French police also arrested 45 XR militant, they all been release now because they have nothing against them except for one of the activist who will be judge for the dangerous act of ... Refusing to give the pin to unlock his phone.

  • A bit unrelated but I remember a drunk conversation with someone working in a had station in Geneva.

The sociological aspect of the gas station is fascinating, within the same minute you can interact with a homeless coming to use the toilet and a guy coming to refill his Lamborghini.
