  • I guess they aren’t that major then?

Obviously not the people here. That's why I am puzzled. Wars, major policies being announced and passed by the government etc and nobody here seems to care at all.

  • I don't want to annoy anybody but why aren't people posting more stories here and other communities on lemmy.nz? There are major news events happening both here and overseas and it seems like nobody wants to discuss any of them.

What do you guys want to see in this community?

  • Deflection is needed in this case. Nothing good comes from focusing on goods created while ignoring all the societal costs.

Something comes out of it which is comparison with other countries and the past.

Again. If you have an alternative metric that is being used elsewhere and has been used in the past you should state it and we can use it to compare.

Cut down the remaining bush in NZ and selling it off would juice up the GDP, for example.

That's what we do in this country. We cut down trees and sell them, we plow wild lands and turn them into paddocks, we sell milk and fruit. Most of our economy is based on extractive industries.

  • That seems like a deflection to me. It's the standard measure every country uses and it's the metric we have used for decades so it's useful nevertheless.

If you want to argue that it doesn't measure the right things post the metric you are using and let's compare it to other countries and past governments.

  • Time will tell if and how much it matters. The fact is that the economy is slowing down and one reason for that is that the new government is imposing austerity measures on the country in order to give tax cuts to the rich. Historically austerity measures will result in deepening of recessions because a significant portion of the population are going to lose well paying government jobs. The ones that don't lose their jobs are afraid that they are going to lose their jobs so they cut back on spending. The rest of the country is also going to feel the pain when they try to get medical care or access any kind of government service. They are not going to be in the mood to buy a new pair of sneakers or that nice necklace in the window.

  • Or encourage families to have kids through incentives?

Wait. I thought you said you were not capable of coming up with solutions.

You do realize it’s not just me, but lots of countries and scientists around the world pointing to the problems that can arise from a rapidly aging population, right?

Yea lots of scientists around the world are also claiming the covid vaccine is harmful.

hey have the worlds lowest birth rate, and this year it dropped even lower to 0.78 children per woman. By 2067, it is predicted that 46% of the population will be over 65. Can you really not grasp how this will have huge ramifications for a society?

Yea it will not have any major ramifications.

When the working population is drastically lower than it is now? How will this affect the economy?

With increased automation and AI it will not effect the economy at all. If anything it will help because we are going to need less people to do the same work anyway.

If it isn’t a problem, why waste all that money?

Religion mostly. Also cultural norms to a lesser extent.

  • There are only three solutions.

    1. Implant babies in women.
    2. Allow more immigrants.
    3. Kill older people or at least urge them to kill themselves to solve this crisis that's going to destroy their country.

Then again I completely and utterly reject your insane alarmism over this issue. I don't think this is some massive problem that's going to destroy the country or GASP!!! make us like Japan. Imagine New Zealand being like Japan. Can anybody imagine something so horrible!!!

    Honestly your alarmism is unhinged.
