  • As someone from the USA, spending enough time in Cuba taught me to not walk unless I can see the ground right in front of me. I noticed once after a trip. I was at Home Depot with a friend. We were looking for an item, and when we would look at the aisle signs, I would stop walking while they kept going.

I guess maybe people are used to having perfect floors in certain environments, so they walk as if nothing could be there.

  • I understand trilateration, but what's "oracle trilateration"? How did these dating apps share the proximity distance of a user and to what precision? Like if it said the user is 5km away, that is still going to give a pretty big area if someone were to trilateral it because the line of the circle would have to include 4.5-5.5km away. Do that three times, and we'd get an area of about a square km. To get it down to 2m, the app would have to be precise to the meter, such as "user is 5,000m away".

  • I just ran a test on my stock Pixel 8 Pro connected via Proton VPN:

    1. I opened Firefox and searched DuckDuckGo for "pool heater".
    2. I scrolled down until I saw an Amazon link, then closed the tab and Firefox.
    3. I opened the Amazon app. I scrolled through the "deals" on the app's home page and did not see anything pool related at all.
    4. I typed "pool" into the search slowly, to see if and when "pool heater" was suggested as a search. I typed in "pool" entirely, yet "pool heater" was never suggested.

I don't know what that implies, but it seems like if I am using Firefox, DDG, and Proton VPN, Amazon isn't monitoring my Internet searches.

  • If you had to explain it, how would you?

  • That had to be some serious schadenfreude. Congrats!

  • One of my awesome repeating jokes was to tell people my telephone number as one number. So say my number was (305) 558-9151, I'd give my number as three billion, fifty-five million, five hundred and eighty-nine thousand, one hundred and fifty-one. I made sooo many friends that way.

  • First, think about when you see something in film that doesn't make sense. For example, the final season of Game of Thrones when Danerys goes bonkers out of nowhere. Everyone thought that made no sense because in their own lives, personality is generally stable. People don't go from being altruistic to genocidal because of a bell. Watchers then blamed the producers for making a terrible decision with the season due to ulterior personal motives.

Think about what a racist's life looks like. What do their social environments look like? They likely only have a few people of color (PoC) around if any. They may have interactions with PoC at work, but since work is somewhat of a forced experience because their coworkers were chosen by someone else, that's what interactions there feel like: imposed. So to them, life is a bunch of a White people and PoC are impositions. This is reality for them.

When they see a movie that doesn't reflect their reality, they notice it and try to make sense of it. Applying what their reality is, they see the PoC as being imposed. The right-wing media then plays off of this and tells them that it's because a progressive boogeyman is trying to make reality different for nefarious purposes. Progressive people are blamed for their discomfort and so it goes.

  • Kinda like this sentence?; because it starts off as a question, but I explain it afterwards with a statement.

  • Why not just stay away from lemmy.ml then? You can start the same communities on another instance. It would be like me going to a Nazi instance and pointing out that they ban anyone that celebrates diversity. Like, yeah... that's what they do. It's in their ethos.

  • I just looked at my weather app (Today Weather), and the report of the current temperature varies by 6°F depending on which data set I choose. I go with the National Weather Service (federal govt).

As far as predicting precipitation, the radar seems pretty good for the next few hours. I press play on it, and it tells me what it thinks the radar will look like for the next 7 hours in 15 mins increments.

I think that predicting the weather beyond a day gets pretty difficult because the weather is too chaotic. The best they can do is to gather data from local weather stations and see how often it rained when they had these same data in the past. So basically, it's like saying, "When the temp has been 85°F, humidity 62%, wind from WNW at 5 kts, pressure at 1016 mBar, and the date was July 29, it rained 6 times out of 10."

  • that's how my ex-wife used to chat with my former best friend

sounds like they deserve each other

  • I just learned that this is an unpopular opinion. In my head, I can't imagine how someone would think that a thoroughly tested medication that was made with impeccable precision in a lab is not considered safer than a "natural remedy" that legally can't even claim it treats anything specific because it would be a lie. If that natural thing worked, we would call it medication.

I have to be missing something. Can someone please explain to me (1) what is a natural medication and (2) how it is better/safer than a synthetic/isolated medication made in a lab?

  • I've heard it as:

What does Snoop call light rain?

    Drizzle

  • That's a solid R voting bloc, but not what tipped it. Florida was a swing state, but the influx of retirees started tipping the scale towards Republicans. Once COVID hit and DeSantis was the prominent conspiracy governor right-wingers started coming here even more. Further making the place worse, MAGAs have made politics their main identity. It's their hobby and find others to socialize with. Since the governor declared that "Florida is where woke goes to die," these people are coming here to establish their new lives.

  • How'd you get ChatGPT to read the file?

  • No way, especially not in the past ~4 years. There is only one ex that I consider, and she's specifically on my to don't list because it will end in disaster. But damnnn, she's on the list for a reason. She wasn't particularly gorgeous, sweet, caring,... particularly anything except physical intimacy.

The best description I can give is to imagine if before we are born, we all are given a certain amount of points that we can spend on building our character. Our souls can spread points on a spectrum of traits: intelligence, speed, love, charisma, agility, physical beauty, openness, fine motor skills, music production, etc. Al "Tico" Einstein dropped a majority on intelligence. Leo The Vinchi put a bunch on ingenuity and painting. Great Alex put a bunch on military strategy. This girl, my ex, put a few on looks, a few on being annoying, and dumped the rest on sex. She then used a cheat code to get more points and put those on sex too.

Tho she is quite skilled with certain intimate behaviors, she doesn't do any one thing mind-blowingly well. Her strengths are her attitude, disposition, and desire paired with a body physically fit enough to actualize them. It's like imagine your favorite adult actress, but she's not acting. She is really like that all the time. She could be mad, sleepy, hot, hungry, whatever, it doesn't matter. You could be in the outside pool of some hotel in downtown Tampa during a lightning storm while she is in the middle of one those passionate borderline PD fights with you where you are seriously asking the universe, "Wtf is happeningggg‽😫" It.doesn't.matter. She will flip like a switch and be ready to go Riley-Ried-on-ecstasy wild. That's what this girl is like.

She's kind of ruined sex for me since I keep pointlessly comparing everyone else to her. It's like having a Ferrari for a while, then going back to regular cars. Most of the time you get an Accord, sometimes a Carolla, and when lucky, you get a Nissan Z. Sometimes you get a Mustang, and you can slowly mod it to ride better than the Z. They're all cool and get you there, but no matter what, it'll never be anything like the Ferrari. Even when you're with the Nissan Z and you open the throttle wide, you'll still wish it rode like the Ferrari.

Despite that, I still don't engage (even tho she hits me up ~once/6 months) because all the points she dumped on sex left no points for sanity. She is crazy. Call-the-cops crazy. Use-furniture-to-barricade-yourself-in-a-room crazy. Flinch-when-you-hear-her-open-a-door-followed-by-her-foot-steps crazy. That's why I have her on the to don't list. So yeah, I'm prolly going to capitulate sometime soon and meet up with her to "catch up".
