  • Based on posts from from various Devs working on HA, I suspect something will get announced on July 20ths Year of the Voice - Chapter 3 stream.

If I had to put money on it I bet they announce some new ESPHOME features or something for hardware setup.

  • Paper maps -> printed map quest directions -> early GPS device -> Google maps with live updates.

    Used them all.

Towns and Cities with numbered streets and avenues are super easy with regular maps.

Trying to find ANYTHING in a city of only named streets requires a huge amount of memorizing without search.

  • Ya that is the other major point. Toyota doesn’t have a charging network, and they didn’t build out a hydrogen network for their hydrogen car.

So even if they have this battery it would not be able to do what they claimed in practical use.

  • Repost of a my previous comment on this elsewhere:

They have been “claiming”/ “announcing” this breakthrough since 2017 repeatedly. They STILL haven’t figured out how to mass produce it affordably to make it meaningful. They keep pushing out the date for when it will arrive for many years now.

  • Tesla controls the car, protocol, charger, and payment processing.

They support CCS as the protocol

Everyone else outside the walled garden is openly handling a much bigger market with many more variables in more countries.

Tesla has more cars than just about all the rest of the market.. Name a charing provider that operates in a country tesla does not?

Forcing customers to use an app for each brand of charger is also an accessibility nightmare.

Funny enough a large number of these charging providers require that ON TOP of having poor monitoring and security for the charging terminals.

Fear mongering about skimmers is a dumb reason to remove traditional payment methods.

Didn't really suggest removing them, I pointed out it is already an issue at nearly all gas stations. Not a new problem.

If I can break into a Tesla charger wirelessly and fuck with your car

Already started to happen with ICE cars back in 2015 are already vulnerable to wireless exploit, no charging network or gas station needed. At least with a Tesla you get quick wireless security updates, no waiting for a recall notice and trip back to the dealer.

  • You mean like all the cars skimmers already found at pay at the pump systems or ATMs? Shocking.

Recalls that at least one brand of EV charger has no screens or keypads and works completely off vehicle hand shake or app unlock, has high uptime from constant monitoring.. Can’t remember the name… hmm

  • If battery health is the ONLY problem with your phone and it is in otherwise great shape then yes it will get you another 2-3 years out of your phone and apple typically supports full OS updates for 4-5 years. Again only if you are fully happy with your phones performance etc..

I got 4+ years out of my iPhone 7

  • If you are single this sounds like it might be an interesting opportunity as long as you find a GOOD place to settle in the US. Much like every province is very different in Canada so are the states.

However keep a few things in mind:

    • you will be a foreigner ( make sure you know your rights / or lack there of)
    • your employment terms may change immediately from being fairly safe and having severance in Canada in law to changing to at will termination in the US depending on the state and situation.
    • find out ALL the details of your company medical coverage and its cost before going, everything will cost you money medically in the US but you might get faster service
    • If you are thinking about buying a home find out what the laws are for foreigners on a TN visa.. Also find out what the property taxes are as in some states they are VERY high, while the price of the home is attractive.

Alternatively look into low cost of living places in Canada and consider moving within Canada. You may find that there is a lot of difference in the provinces and major cities.

  • Once we have a native / scalable (multi room / multi device) hardware option for voice with wake words these new features for phrases and such are going to be great.

Other than the text to speech which I already use for announcements most of the speech stuff I am holding off on till I can full circle replace my Google Home Minis for basic commands.

  • How many people are going to still post death threats, character assassinations, or make racist or sexist comments.

Have you seen twitter and what named public figures say all the time and the comments from verified named accounts below?

I don't believe we should have to link our personal info, but I do think we should have somewhat consistent ID that are confirmed linked to a person in order to gain some form of trust.

When you can just spin up random throwaways you can say whatever you want at no cost of time or money to you.

  • PRINGLES ORIGINAL

Dried potatoes, Vegetable oil, Corn flour, Corn starch, Rice flour, Sugars (maltodextrin), Mono- and diglycerides, Salt, Citric acid, Wheat starch.

    RUFFLES ORIGINAL

Potatoes, Vegetable Oil (Canola, Corn, Soybean, and/or Sunflower Oil), and Salt.

    Old Dutch chip Original

    POTATOES, VEGETABLE OIL, SALT.

Would have to compare the actual weights offered by buy weight you will always get more potato in other brands.

  • Rental costs in Edmonton rose 11.3 per cent from June 2022 to June 2023, but the city still offers the most affordable housing out of any major city, according to data from Rentals.ca, a large online real estate network.

Prices are rising but it is still the most affordable.. Not shocking.

  • Surprised no one mentioned the native option of paying for the native Nabu Casa tunnel, you also get some other benefits. It is by far the easiest option but not free. It does however support Home Assistant development.

Personally I just expose my instance behind Opnsense with an SSL cert, and some web application firewall rules using nginx but that is a more technical configuration.

  • Why does the 2FA not work like "ANY OTHER" 2FA SETUP.. if you are on a desktop and normally use a phone app to auth the link does NOTHING on the desktop when most system provide a QR Code or something.

Also as someone noted it enables without confirmation (easy to lock yourself out) and does not provide one time recovery keys or anything like most systems.

I copied the URL and then was able to add the key and algorithm setting manually but this experience is dangerously bad for a typical user.
