  • But, how well has the "let's not anger Turkey otherwise they'll get closer to Russia" approach worked out? They've been literally getting closer and closer to Russia, they're still denying the Armenian genocide and are helping Azerbaijan commit a new one, they didn't hesitate to destabilize Europe by weaponizing refugees to help the far-right rise to power, and they've been illegally occupying part of Cyprus.

So again, how well had the "let's not alienate them" strategy worked out?

  • Yep, my comment was meant to suggest that maybe it's also time for Turkey to leave NATO.

  • I oscillate between heippy and mack tbf

  • wrong Muslim sect

There's a bit of that but only as far as Lebanon is concerned, because Hezbollah is Shia and Palestinian Muslims (and especially Hamas) are mostly Sunni and there will likely be a fight for power between Hezbollah and Hamas if the latter ever infiltrate Lebanon, because for the past 13 centuries there has never been peace on the same soil between Shia and Sunni armed groups, which is why Lebanon is not opening its doors to Palestinians.

With regards to Egypt, sect isn't really the issue as both are Sunni. However, the military that is ruling Egypt has a very rough history with the Muslim Brotherhood (which was very violent back then, almost nothing to do with Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood) from which Hamas was born, so they likely don't want Hamas terrorists infiltrating Egypt either.

So neither Egypt nor Lebanon want Palestinians as they're placing their security and more importantly their political interests above Palestinian lives.

  • While that's likely true as a hostage at that age is fragile and might die on them if they're too harsh to her or she doesn't get her meds and as you said a dead hostage won't be worth anything to them anyway, it's also true that if anyone of us was in her shoes and had a loved one still in captivity we wouldn't say a single negative thing about the captors before they release him/her. There's a reason why they kept their husbands, it's very likely a "you better say something nice about us to the media or you're going to kiss your husbands goodbye" situation.

  • Check out LocalSend for sending files between any device running it in your local network, it's also FOSS 😁

  • For time management, there's the Pomodoro technique where you basically break your work time into small sessions of 20~30 minutes where you work on just one thing at a time separated by short 5 minutes breaks. If you vibe with this approach, on Android there's the Goodtime app. It's FOSS and you can find it on F-Droid.

I also maintain to-do lists using the Quillpad app, also on F-Droid. You can also take Markdown notes with it.

For my work emails they're obviously in our work computers and you can't access them outside our intranet, so not accessible on my Android phone, but I still mark important meetings on my phone's Google Calendar as I pay attention to my phone much more than my work PC's Outlook calendar.

Also not sure if we can count this as a productivity app, but whenever I'm under too much stress there's also the app Smiling Mind I turn to for some meditation and breathing exercises.

Finally, for all these things I find that a phone stand is also very useful. I'm using Tonyhoney (you can find it on Amazon, it's very cheap, or someone well-versed in these things can 3D-print something similar) and it does its job very well (though not very practical if you want to charge your phone).

  • can confirm this issue with the 1.15.6 version on Android 14

  • Seconding the Brother laser printers. I have a Brother HL-L2350DW, a monochrome laser printer, and it's just awesome. Works with Linux and Android on Wi-Fi without any issues and the print quality is amazing (those writing documents in LaTeX will love it as they look just great when you print them). Also, 3rd-party toner works fine with it if you want to save some money (obviously the quality will vary, the official ones have the best quality so far).

  • but that’s because a lot of the news is “Isreal claims this” and “An IDF statement that” the sources themselves are biased

It's also important to keep in mind that when you read "Gaza health ministry claims", in reality it's the same as "Hamas' health ministry claims" since Hamas has been ruling that area since 2006 and tortured the Palestinian opposition ever since (https://www.amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2015/05/gaza-palestinians-tortured-summarily-killed-by-hamas-forces-during-2014-conflict/ ). Same thing with claims by Al Jazeera since Qatar hosts Hamas' leadership and funds their lavish lifestyles there so it wouldn't be right for them to suggest in their own newspaper that they're hosting terrorists, thus their news will rarely be critical of Hamas.

What's the solution? There are a few choices you could make. You could cherrypick pro-Palestinian sources like Al Jazeera, Middle East Eye or Electronic Intifada and automatically dismiss whatever Israel says as disinformation and it could make you feel good about yourself as it's very easy to oversimplify the conflict as just one big high-tech state abusing poor people fighting back with stones. You could also do the same cherrypicking for a pro-Israel position. Or you could dismiss any pro-Palestinian or pro-Israel source and only listen to news sources that provide a "balanced" account of the events (Associated Press is indeed very good). Or, much better but will require more thinking on your part: you read all of them and you dismiss none of them.

  • Cool thanks! I also played around with Waydroid and it's amazing, it can run Android games at near native speed provided they have x86 binaries (otherwise it's going to be using Arm emulation, which is very slow). I pasted your script on termbin to get rid of the & escaping by Lemmy: https://termbin.com/x704

  • Didn't Steve Huffman praise Elon Musk and say that his handling of Twitter was an example for him? Perfectly natural for him to think it would somehow be a good idea to make account creation mandatory on Reddit.

  • Ayaneo Flip DS

    It's not even hiding it.

More seriously though, I always loved the form factor of the Nintendo DS (I'm still rocking a 3DS) and the dual-screen setup allowed for amazing and unique gameplays that you don't find anymore in today's games where the focus is more and more on 3D graphics. Try to watch a Kirby Canvas Curse playthrough and you'll get what I mean: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=006aQg2JIvI , it was also good as a Kanji learning tool for Japanese learners (see for example: https://2think.org/japan-ds.shtml).

  • I didn't get through the whole article. But I wonder why these people didn't just defect

Because Russia and China are North Korea's allies and just recently China has been sending defectors back to North Korea.

  • Dolphin (GameCube emulator) works really well on my Pixel 7a and for now it's running Zelda: The Wind Waker without any issues or slowdowns. My Gamesir X2 (USB-C) gamepad is also automatically detected.
