  • If our species cared about our species' future, we would live with whatever energy generation our only habitat could environmentally tolerate/sustain, and we clearly wouldn't have bred to the point that the planet is pushing back. Instead we STILL demand growth/metastasis. "growth or die!" Oh the delicious gallows irony. Homeostasis should have been our species' business, but that ship has sailed.

Humans are so self-important that we don't even seem to care about how fragile our situation is, and we all know at some level we're going to be our own end.

  • Journalism is dead

Yep, buried between the arts and empathy, just behind public education. If you see the social contract's headstone, you've gone too far.

Man, the private profit motive sure does love killin.

  • There's no fixing this country. I'll vote for the band-aid yet again in Biden, just like last time and Clinton before, but we're bleeding out and Biden pulling it out won't change that, only buy a little more time with no path to not bleeding out.

The people without meaningful capital, most people, have literally no unequivocal advocates with significant power, even Biden straddles the line of trying to play to us while appeasing the political briber class.

They own the means of production, state violence, mass media propaganda, and even set curriculum from K-Colleges of economics to indoctrinate us to be our blatant con-game of an economy's defenders.

Things will continue to decline until the people accept this and revolt, or far more likely, our rigged market capitalist con-game collapses having conquered the board and having no new unexploited markets to metastasize/grow with. Our wealthiest will be fine, don't worry, none have loyalty to any nation-state, and they all have temperate places of escape to avoid the consequences of their actions, alls well that ends well for the ones that matter.

The capital markets that own you and I don't care what their middle managers in DC do to us, only what DC can funnel to them.

If that means glorious profit from rage clicks as Trump gets PEASANT women arrested for abortions and PEASANT minorities murdered by his mobs with impunity, don't worry significant capital holders will be immune as usual, then our capitalist owners only have one thing to say: "you had us at glorious profit."

And don't forget kids, market capitalism is the only way. That's why we used our intelligence agencies and military to topple entire regimes attempting something else for more than half a century to keep those markets open for our capitalist's exploitation, because market capitalism is the only way. Any other economic system will fail, we'll continue to use every tool at our disposal to make sure of that.

  • I think Harry Potter has been thoroughly milked. See the last attempt at a movie franchise.

I played Hogwarts Legacy, it was meh imho. I clearly won't be playing Hogwarts Legacy II, as it will be a live service game for no good reason.

  • "Old men yell at each other, both believing their opponent is a cloud."

I'm voting Biden to attempt to stave off the fascist, but having 2 senile men argue with each other would be entertaining to say the least.

Just let them both sit and have little snacks and Ensures available during it, no need for elder abuse.

  • The thing that always needs to be considered upon hearing a conspiracy theory: the entity or entities allegedly engaging in a conspiracy that has remained secret for an appreciable period must be hyper-competent enough to keep said secrets, and if that entity fucks up regularly, it becomes increasingly unlikely.

Or to put it another way, a successful conspirator cannot be both some evil mastermind and some incompetent fuck up at the same time if you want your theory to make any sense.

Unless you want to play games about that being staged to make you believe they're incompetent, in which case I wish you a great time in Wonderland.

  • He can put on a brave face all he wants, he and the Republicans and Neoliberals of the Reagan era declared war on facts when they got in the way of corporate profit ('climate change is hoax for scientists to sell books herp derp'), indoctrinating tens of millions of hateful, conspiratorial lunatics to trust nothing except conservative media, until it became self sustaining, the monsters they created stopped trusting anything at all except their own stoked hatreds, and corporate Republicans like McConnell found their party power structure and even chambers being invaded by some of the ignorant hicks their con-game was meant to manipulate as their useful idiots, not scuffing the floors of his halls of sophisticated right-wing power.

Trump just instinctually saw the con-game, and stole it right out from under the old money corporate Republicans by turning their well honed dog whistles into screeching bullhorns.

I have no doubt McConnell feels shame in his retreat and endorsement of his power structure's thief, not because he ever cared about the country, its people, or the future, but because their long-meticulous con of the correct room of sophisticated people manipulating the peasants for their portfolio's interests was invaded, conquered, and broken by a small time crass baffoon who stole their con out from under them because, though he is a baffoon and an idiot, Trump does have innate, instinctual con-game that can't really be taught, and that includes recognizing other's grifts and making them his. If Trump weren't born to money, he'd be the top earner at whatever shady used car lot he eventually landed in.

    Best laid plans, Mitch.

  • They want both victimhood and domination, at the same time, and being able to hold that wild dissonance in their heads without alarm bells going off is what makes them Republicans. Republican media has trained them into believing that being both victim and oppressor is a perfectly valid position to hold, and because it feels good to believe that, that they deserve to be powerful enough hurt others and also bear no responsibility for that power as they are the victims of the people they want to hurt, many do.

They aren't special or anything, critical thinking and reasoning must be taught. Without that, most people rely on their feelings. The Nazis convinced massive swaths of Germans that because Jews and other groups they hated were "victimizing the German people," scapegoating them of course, the German people should allow the Nazis to murder them in their name, guilt free because clearly the german people were the victims of these scapegoats.

Herd mentality is a hell of a drug. So is Schadenfreude. American Republicans are addicted to both. Not entirely their fault either, Fox "News" and other right wing propaganda made them into what they've become over decades. Free speech weaponized into a a cancerous means of indoctrination through appealing to fear and hatred.

  • Republican voters: "Does he still piss off the many, many, many groups of people we openly hate and wish harm upon more than any other candidate could?"

Well yes, but what does that have to do with effective governance?

Republican voters: "what the fuck is governance?"

  • I'm just a cynic who absolutely would, but understands that humans en masse are far more interested in getting mooaar than their fellow humans, and largely need humans to look down on to feel content, that what we want is incompatible with who and what we are, using all of human history, right into last century's most prominent genocide victims deciding genocide looks like fun and they'll have a go, as evidence.

I want humanity to get it's head out of its ass so that we can all maximize being a little happy instead of a relative view being gluttonously happy at the expense of most's misery, but I recognize that I might as well want humans to be able to flap their arms and magically start flying like birds, it's just as pointless and impossible, both are beyond our capacity.

  • I promise you that isn't the case. I'm not a fan of my species anymore, and have come to understand we have no interest in an equitable world that prioritizes human happiness, so I'm just here to watch and comment on the necrotic freakshow without hope or agenda, merely for entertainment.

Humanity largely doesn't deserve nice things, which sucks for the relative few innately kind, empathetic among us, but I have no power to help them, and most of my species would try to stop me if I did, probably to save the beloved economy or some similar drivel.

  • Reagan killed any chance for this nation to right itself as a representative democracy, to thunderous Republican and Neoliberal applause.

This is just left over momentum. It's a shame the oppressed people, some whom will soon be murdered by fascists, will still spend whatever time they have left be it years or decades, screeching about how we can fix this system while maintaining the current economy and power structures. Sorry cousin, doesn't work that way.

We can revolt and tear down this fully captured economic prison, suffer a lot of pain rebuilding, and eventually have hope for a better future if we succeed, or we can suffer under this prison until it collapses under it's own weight, damage done, and start rebuilding then with nothing, even the hopeful energy/momentum of purposeful revolution.

But I know how chickenshit and social opiate addicted we are, so we will wait for collapse and blame everything except our former nation's core values of greed, selfishness, schadenfreude, and sociopathy as we rebuild something with the same horrible values, but this time with a far more hostile planet so even more torturous results.

  • We're not going to agree on whether it's understandable to be a self-identified journalistic organization that prioritizes self-preservation over journalism.

I at some point tagged you as an apologist for capitalism, so we just have 2 very different world views and ethics on most issues. Have a good one.

  • Do you see this mess stabilizing without one? I want Republicans to have access to medical care, an equitable economy, and education, god knows they need it.

They openly prefer people like me were dead. There's no negotiating with that.

  • Journalism is more important than any journalistic organization. The NYT has clearly forgotten that reality. The best journalists often put themselves in harm's way to shine light on ugly realities, and their country doesn't usually need to be falling to fascism to do so.

The NYT is good at protecting themselves at the cost of good journalism. Better to survive as a shiny brand than burn out as as journalists at a journalistic organization, I suppose.
