Depends on how you define "state". IIRC, Marx drew a distinction between "state" and "government", where the former is all the coercive institutions (cops, prisons, courts, etc). In this framework, you need a "government" to do the things you refer to, but participation in that government's activities should be voluntary, without the threat of armed government agents showing up at your door if you don't comply.

But if teachers were paid well, more talented people might decide to become teachers, and then children would receive better educations and possibly start to question why our society is structured the way it is. Much better to solve the problem at its root and keep everyone ignorant.

Three other competitors didn't survive what were supposed to be non-lethal qualifier duels on the day before the finals. One player tragically died right after winning a duel to a random explosion from their Goblin Rocket Boots. Another Goblin malfunction killed a player who was an official spectator for the fights.

To defend its 2017 repeal of net neutrality rules, the Pai FCC argued that broadband isn't a telecommunications service because Internet providers also offer DNS (Domain Name System) services and caching as part of the broadband package. A judge said the Pai FCC was entitled to deference on this opinion—even if it didn't make a lot of sense.

Basically, Trump's lackeys legally classified broadband as an "information service" to screw the American people and the question is whether the Supreme Court will go along with this blatant nonsense.

This is the only experiment that comes up from Googling Manitoba UBI, and it doesn't seem to match what you say. A study of about 2k people, definitely not the whole population, and this article lists quite a number of positive statements about it.

The problem is the definition of "work". There's lots of things a person can do that both require a lot of effort and produce real benefit to society that are difficult or impossible to make money from, and therefore they aren't "work". Raising children being the most obvious example.

Every single study on UBI finds that it is a good idea that benefits both the recipients and society as a whole, but because it contradicts the dominant ideology it can't be allowed to happen.

Completely reasonable. I'm a Millenial and I also have a lot of anxiety about the future. Previous generations screwed us all really hard.

I'm not quite old enough to have played it on release, but I think you're right that System Shock was a game with a lot of amazing ideas that was limited by the technology of the day. I was very happy to see such an authentic remake, which was clearly made by people who cared deeply about the source material.

Interesting that you interpret leaning to peek around corners as a modern convenience when it actually was in the original. The portrait in the top left of the original UI shows the player's current posture.

The US economy (and much of the rest of the world) actually went into recession after ww1. Then after ww2 you have to consider that the US was one of the very few industrialized countries that didn't get its cities blown up. The war was 'good' for the US mostly because it was much worse for everyone else.
