  • My opinions and ideas have also stopped being so heavily scrutinised or as regularly challenged. Responses to my ideas have changed from a "No, because" or "Have you thought of" to more of a "Yes, and".

Genuine question: might this just be because he transitioned at 17 and went from being treated as a child pre-transition to an adult post-transition?

  • Yes, but you also probably don't repost screenshots of cringeworthy anime-centric posts other people have made so that you can make fun of them with other people. There's a difference between seeing something, going, "lol that's dumb," and moving on VS seeing something, going, "lol so fucking stupid," taking a screenshot, and posting it somewhere else so you and a bunch of other people can spend time making fun of it and tearing it apart in the comments.

  • Yeah, AI's biggest weakness right now is that it just doesn't work sometimes. It's very unreliable, but whether or not it's too unreliable depends on what exactly you need it for. The scope of LLMs is limited by this unreliability, but generative AI is wonderful at doing things that either don't need to be perfect all the time or can simply be redone if there's a mistake. That's why it's putting artists out of work, but not automating the boring, really important stuff yet.

  • Well, laughing at something in the way you described is kind of just a different way of hating on it, is it not? Even the way you phrased, "...calling out the stupidity of shit other people say," suggests a strong dislike of the statements showcased on those subs.

  • I'm not aware of communities like that on Lemmy, but Reddit's got r/terriblefacebookmemes, a bunch of subs with the format r/shit____say(s), r/therightcantmeme, etc. They're unambiguously posting the content because they don't like it and want everyone to hate on it with them.

  • That's a good point. Nobody has actually constructed a fully to-scale nether portal in the real world and tried to light it. We don't know with absolute 100% certainty that it won't work!

Edit: based on Hedgehog's numbers, a portal made of 10 blocks would "only" cost $130,000. For science!

  • According to CNN, "passenger vehicles contribute 29% of total US greenhouse gas emissions," and I reckon the vast majority of that is probably from people commuting. If we could cut vehicle emissions by just 1/3 (number I pulled out of my ass) by having people work remote when they can, it would be a fucking massive 10% decrease in overall emissions.

  • I installed it and gave it a whirl. I'm not sure if I'm just doing something wrong, but every time I disable it for a specific website (like with discord or lemmy, since those already have dark themes), I get a popup that says, "Settings application failed. Refresh the page and try again. Midnight Lizard has been updated. Please refresh the page." It also seems to make the extension popup switch to light theme, which is pretty atrocious lol.

  • It's not always for the benefit of the players. Gameloft, the makers of the Asphalt mobile racing series, was caught making the AI harder during special timed events that allowed you to win extra/special stuff by beating said AI. This was obviously for the express purpose of manipulating people into playing more and even though I once loved playing Asphalt 8 & 9, I no longer touch any of their games because of how shitty and disingenuous that is.

  • I think I tried that once and couldn't get it to work. I'm pretty sure my math was fine, I think it just either that it wasn't measured accurately enough or I was unlucky and the second eye ended up pointing at a different stronghold. Very cool that you got it working!
