It doesn't last as long, that why. Actually good denim is really hard to get now on jeans without paying a fortune.

I love eating lions mane as well (taste and medicinal properties), also king blue oysters seem to be the most reliable strain I currently have. Lions mane can be used as a sub for crab, or you can press it for a steak sub. King blue oysters are a relatively newly bred strain, good oyster taste with maybe a hint of shrimp. I generally either fry mushies in butter with some salt and pepper, or actually follow a recipe if I'm trying anything more complex. If you are planning to grow them, the main equipment is start with is a pressure cooker for sterilizing spawn (I use a wild bird seed tek for my grain jars). Then just use hardwood fuel pellets and pasteurize them with boiling water in an autoclavable bag for when moving to bulk.

Hiking, kayaking, swimming, gardening, and mycology! I love growing Gourmet mushies to eat, as I'm vegetarian and some of the varieties I grow I can't get in my area easily. It's not too hard for some basic mushrooms (blue and pink oysters are where I'd start), and it is fascinating to see the mycelium grow.

Plus after growing up and living in a red state (NC, mostly purple but gerrymandering dropped a can of red paint over the state), I'd also add that very, very few of my classmates were even considering getting a job in education, and if they were, they were going into it knowing they were not going to get rich. I went to a decent high school after my freshman year, but yeah, working at a poor/rural school is kinda risky and often not worth the effort. One of my aunts works at the local somewhat rural/poor high school, and today I heard her make an offhand remark about how when she retires, she will have to get a supplemental job.

The issues with education mostly boil down to how the current field is pretty much scorched unless a decent amount of money is involved. I went to a middle college after my freshman year, and I know a lot of those teachers were paid pretty decently for the area. That is mostly because our scores majorly boosted the avg for the county, so some better funding and support was provided. Even then, I remember hearing about the work/life balance of grading student work and kind of accepted that it wasn't for me.

Assume that meta starts managing the largest instances, and makes a bunch of changes that give actually useful features that other instances don't adopt (assume they require some meta oversight or other bs). What happens when meta starts using their clout to start suggesting more changes moving forwards, further alienating those instances and maybe getting less people to use them. Then you have issues maintaining some niche communities that are not under meta's instance, so info is naturally funneled back into a meta instance. And then meta does something to essentially lock down the use of their instance so you have to give them your personal data in order to view the data generated by the community in the meta instance.

I've actually seen this happen personally with people growing cordyceps mushrooms. There is a big active group on Facebook that discusses their tips and tricks, but you have to log in to be able to see their info now.

Despite a lot of people here being more or less fine with the current growth, there absolutely needs to be growth so that some of the niche communities will migrate here so that info can't be locked down.

Out of curiosity, how likely do you expect those reddit mods to move to lemmy? I see a bunch of retiring mods posts, but not many that have said they were moving here.
