  • Nothing you said was wrong, but the conclusion doesn't follow to me. Does any of that justify the bombings? The US didn't nuke two military bases, these were largely civilian city centers. Relevant military targets (within range of US bombers) had generally already all been levelled at that point.

Not to mention that it has been shown, time and time again, that the nuclear bombs were not integral to the Japanese surrender. Unless your argument is simply that murdering civilians is totally okay purely out of a sense of revenge.

  • Japanese permanent resident here.

Epidurals are very rare. They exist but they are not popular at all. Some is the belief that a "natural" birth is better. In some cases it is just availability of an anesthiaologist that is equipped to do one. Some people just don't even realise it is an option. The only people I know here who have had one were non-Japanese residents.

I don't think people necessarily look down on a mother who has one, it's rare enough that nobody would even ask probably, but it's just not a common procedure.

  • Technically the work week is the same, not factoring in commutes. Folks who work in Tokyo often live in neighboring cities like Saitama and commute in.

There's typically a lot of unpaid overtime though. There is the concept of "black companies" that force employees to work up to 100 hours a week. To some degree the government has been trying to crack down on it, and has met with some success, especially with the bigger international. My company is the Japanese branch of a US company, so we are a little better than most, but some of that still happens. I probably work about 45-50 hours a week on the clock on average, plus maybe 2-3 off the clock. I don't live or work in Tokyo anymore, so my commute is fairly insignificant.

Thankfully the "you have to go out drinking with all of your coworkers after work" thing has mostly fallen by the wayside. Those events still happen, but it is way more acceptable to just...not go.

  • Oh they'd spin it as a victory if that happened.

"Russian missile intercepted by statue's shield and trident. Reports on the ground say that the missile was heading towards an orphange full of children, nurses, and puppies."

  • This has always been my position. There is a close to 0% chance you are going to change the mind of the person you are arguing with, with the rare exception of people who have only a surface-level understanding of the issues and are not yet emotinally or intellectually invested.

There are always bystanders though who will see what people are posting. The Marxist providing rational and well reasoned arguments is going to seem a lot more compelling to people who themselves aren't invested, especially compared to somebody verbally running around in circles making unfounded claims.

  • America must scale up its efforts to ensure primacy on land, at sea, in the air, in cyberspace and in outer space sufficiently to deter any rivals.

Yes, America's problem is definitely their paltry military spending. They must spend even more on the arms industry, that will fix all their problems. For freedom!

Also in outer space? Is America planning another Space Race? Despite their claims of victory, the last one really didn't go that well for them.

  • Leave that poor straw man alone, he didn't do anything to you.

You can be opposed to prostitution and the exploitation thereof without hating sex workers. In fact, said opposition most often stems fro empathy towards sex workers.

  • yet one cannot seriously argue that what western media is doing isn’t propaganda for war.

Well you see, they are the Good Guys, so they can't do propaganda. That is only for authoritarian dictatorships, not enlightened democracies like civilized European countries. Otherwise, their totally free media would call them out on it.

  • They wear their biases on their sleeve for sure, but I wouldn't say they are anything like RFA/RFE. I wouldn't say to use them (or any singular source honestly) as your sole source of news, but they're not a bad one to have in the rotation.

  • They outsourced from the DPRK, obviously. No nation on Earth has a better drama program, did you know that 90% of the population are paid actors? It's an impressive dedication to the arts.

  • they should know something about how terrible the effects of depleted uranium and cluster munitions are,

I think in many cases, they don't. Alternatively, they are so far removed from the conflict that it's just a competition they need to "win". I doubt the cost of human life is something that they even really comprehend.
