  • While this is an issue, there are more than a few "non-profits" that have come into existence in the past 5 to 10 years that are "saving the world by planting millions of acres of trees". These assholes are even more guilty than the lumber companies because at least the lumber companies are planning on cycling the trees, not trying to repopulate a forest the wrong way.

A more effective solution would be to mandate that all trees that are lumbered must be replaced 1:1 with saplings of the same species. It won't fix the loss of old growth, but at least it will give a chance for maintaining biodiversity so long as there aren't any overzealous moose or goats.

  • The price hiking to cover the additional "costs of doing business" are specifically why I included a formula-based localized rent cap in the suggestion. The cost of doing business is for the business owners to figure out, not the customers. People have forgotten that. Hence the inflation. Hence the corporate plutocracy for an ad hoc governmental system. If you send someone to a convention, that doesn't go into your prices, that is a one-time cost that you incurred trying to expand your business. If you have to pay the city to withhold a single-family home from being accessible to ownership by a single family, that is the base market entry cost for being allowed to siphon money from someone who actually does things to get that money. That isn't something that gets passed on. I also want to add in that only individuals are allowed to own the medallions and they at least have to be residents of the county, if not the city itself. Money moves from the community to the community and builds the local economy instead of being sucked out I to some global holdings company never to be seen again. But that us my radical dream of a way to fix housing and work on the economy in a meaningful way.

It didn't take much to radicalize me though. Finding out that my landleechs directly obtained 25 rental properties in the city I'm in from landleeche who was retiring, getting a special mortgage that is not even available to us common folk that has basically 0 APR and effectively withholding 25 houses which my wife and I could have probably purchased at the time from going on sale, forcing us to rent instead of own like we wanted. Then treating us like we are the problem when I assert my rights. Yeah. Fuck landleeches, people's housing is not a meal ticket.

  • Lol, I am supporting my assertion of the underlying reasoning for his decisions based on real and factual evidence. It is an inductive argument. Look at a problem, find a pattern, find a general description for the pattern, then execute the general description on further instances of the system.

I asserted that Elon Musk was a pompous assclown who looks down on normal people and thinks they don't deserve to be capable of the same things as him. You challenged that assessment, so I found a pattern of behavior and was able to support it with evidence that validates it, then generalizing the pattern of behavior and applying that generalization to my original assertion still yields a true output, so therefore 'ole Husky Musky is a pompous assclown who sees fit to punish the little guy and make sure we are all kept in our place. QED ∎

(to my math literate comrades, the redundancy is a joke)

  • Ok, so I kinda slipped right over your post looking for titles, but didn't realize that I had forgotten 3 of my favorites and you have them right here. FAQ, Primer, and Time Lapse. Time Lapse in particular I have been trying to remember the name of for years.

  • Ok, 2 down, one to go. This is fundamentally my favorite time traveler movie of all time. The whole thing is just so spectacularly written and performed to make it a guessing game all the way through.

  • This reminds me of the argument that US police shoot and kill more innocent unarmed white people than they do black people. A. Shut the fuck up, you have no concept of how to normalize statistics so they are meaningfully comparable. B. Why do you seem to be ok, at all, that police officers shoot and kill enough unarmed innocent people every year to even make this point something that is worth discussing?

  • The Christian god was never loving. He has always been an egomaniacal sociopath with an inferiority complex and some mood disorder. Maybe borderline personality disorder. He seems paranoid, controlling, and prone to manipulation and explosive rage when he feels line he has been slighted.

I may be misremembering the DSM negative characteristic map for BPD though. To anyone with BPD out there reading this, I apologize for making a joke at your expense. I know it is a very difficult mental illness to live with, at least when you recognize what is going on. I have known a few people who did not and it wasn't pretty for those in their life.

  • I agree, but please add the father in there. Not trying to derail the conversation, but he is losing his child too and the woman he loves's life is on the line. We do need to start remembering to respect partners during these types of events.

  • Oh.. Someone who knows my pain and hellscape. Would that I could escape it. My wife is pregnant right now and has some health conditions, so we have 2 major existential dreads on top of all the other normal ones. 1. That she miscarries or has other complications due to her autoimmune disease and 2. If she does, some asshole is going to arrest her for "being pregnant while ill".
