  • You are not wrong, but Kagi is basically still a baby. They started maybe like last summer or so? And already decreased their prices twice (well, relative prices.) I think if we give them some time there will be a good priced tier for everyone.

P.S. Search engine is not the only thing they have.

  • If you can dualboot (know how to, also SSDs are cheap now), then just give it a go with whatever you think looks great (gotta admit, Zorin looks real smooth.) Then if anything goes wrong you at least have a backup OS.

I am new to linux as well and dualbooting gives a huge safety net and peace of mind. I just looked at Manjaro, thought it looked cool, installed it and learnt the basics, and I am on a different distro now.

  • Agreed on the svelte part.

But I think solidjs has a real chance of taking over React, because its similar, meaning JSX and hooks, but without the footguns. After using React, its so much cleaner and easier to work with, i cannot recommend it enough.

  • If you just want to try frontend, not trying to get a job there are these frameworks you should try:

    • Solidjs (love it so far) for a web application so SPA with separate backends
    • htmx to have a decently interactive website, it can be integrated with any webserver
    • astro for generating static sites

And i think everyone should use either Typescript or JSDoc for any bigger application.

  • At first i was hesitant with kagi, like: Why would i pay for a search engine? Then i realized, on the others i am the product anyway, so privacy vs little bit of money. So i am a kagi user now! At the same time, kagi will keep getting better and better (just checked their blogs how much they upgraded in a year.)

TL;DR: Anone who sees this, give kagi search a try!

  • There is brave search, which seemed pretty good to me, even though i am using kagi search now. And to be honest, so far kagi seems really solid, and if you go past the fact that you have to pay for it (on most other search engines you are the product) then give it a try, the first 100 searches are free.

  • Im dipping my toes in self hosting and syncthing is just :chefs kiss:. I use it only with Obsidian, Signal & Aegis so far (and will sync my configs as well on linux), and the safety net it gives is just awesome.

  • Some alternatives you could try:

    • Search: Brave search / kagi search
    • Mail: Protonmail
    • Drive: filen / Proton drive
    • Maps: openstreetmap (there are multiple applications integrating it)
    • TOTP: Aegis (android)
    • Android: LineageOS
    • (Or self hosting, which can replace google services)

These are the things that just quickly came to mind, hope it helps :)

  • To be more specific, i mean uncontrolled capitalism. There should be a healthy middle ground as with everything, but people tend to go with the extremes unfortunately. There are good things in socialism (ex. public healthcare) and good things in capitalism (ex. free market.)

  • Everyone should use whatever their heart desires, and for me the voyager app is beyond perfect (Android, PWA.) I havent used Sync so it might be better in some aspects but I am content with voyager.

P.S. If you really like a client you should donate any amount to the developer(s) to help them keep their app awesome!
