  • What I think I'm hearing is there are "2" kinds of people, those who know they've fucked up, see it, own it, and remain humble.

And those who aren't as humble and are, instead, confident and possibly unaware.

There's more here, though. Calling oneself stupid isn't humble. It puts the focus on oneself. Keeps it there. The occasional flitter that swings and reminds us that we're all just trying.. Cool. Dwelling? Less cool.

I'm not talking about a continuum. I'm talking about leaving the "stupid" line and being less focused on that. And more focused on being decent, virtuous and not a chump, all at the same time.

Also, some "confident" people are very self aware and aware of their inadequacies as they see them. They just don't let that stop them from engaging. In short, all may not be as it appears.

  • But Google has earned that rep. And they aren't saying or doing much to change it.

Minimal vision, weak execution, MVP agile approach with strong emphasis on the "Minimally,* and no heart, soul, grit.

I know they're a business, but sometimes, I think, if they could just be okay losing money for longer, they'd turn some of the projects into something good.

I really don't like Zuck, but he's willing to lose billions a year on things he believes in. Google doesn't do that (much) now. AI and quantum computing are the only things that spring to mind.

  • Good question and maybe kind of brave to ask. Regardless, props for asking a very human, deeper question.

I don't have this figured out, but below are some of the things that help me. Many are free, or close.

Meditations. I used guided for a while and now if I know I need to slow down, I'll pause and meditate for a minute or so. It took a while to build the quicker slowdown, but it's often available to me.

Stoic philosophy. This isn't stoicism in the classic sense. It's about learning what matters, what you can control, and learning that that's just about all you can do. Extrernal validations are nice, but can't be expected or relied upon. Sometimes life sucks, but we can change our internal climate (with practice).

Within philosophical stoicism, I think The Subtle Art of not giving a Fuck helped. It may not be seen as stoic philosophy, but it's a layman's guy to that very idea. Helpful.

YouTube channels : Mark Manson & Daily Stoic

Other meditations that helped were things like Tara Brach. Kinda woo at times, but her voice and tone slow things down for me and the messages are often relatable. I'm not into manifestations or all that, but an easy, slow, modulated voice gets me. Especially if the message is about self forgiveness.

My wife. So much that. She's mine and I'm not sharing. But the idea remains. If you have someone supportive, who you also support, it helps.

Strangely, reading the Nauceous Nocturne within the Essential Calvin and Hobbies. I kid you not. Calvin's in the dark and all these monsters, events and catastrophes emerge in horrible, amusing, cartoonish form. Then? By simply existing and being noticed by a monster, Hobbes scares away the fears. Find a Hobbes. Be a Hobbes. The monsters are often in our head.

Support others. It gets us out of our circles and we see other (sometime worse) life events and we see people endure. Help them endure. Be kind.

Nest egg. If possible, having some amount of back up money in the bank that is there for major life events, even if it's not enough... It helps. Financial exposure and concern was one of my biggest - no, Is one of my biggest triggers.

Therapy. Did that for a while, got to a better place with CBT and such. Then if I see erosion, I do the above things and if I think I'm losing ground, or that it's time to gain more, I go back to my therapist for a few months of every other week sessions.

Journaling. I don't do it often, but it can help slow thoughts, reveal them, and upon rereading show us where we can or could turn the conversation we're having with oursleves. I see some of my anxiety as self abuse, so I'm trying to learn to be kinder with myself. I'm already, usually, kind (but firm) with others. I just hold myself to these standards that... They're lofty. I'm a person, too, so I have to give myself permission to be less than perfect.

I'm still learning. I think we all are. Hopefully something in here helps. Am open to dialogue here or otherwise. Regardless, anxiety sucks and I hope you find what works for you, chips away at it, and find a steadier emotional life. That roller coaster isn't fun.

Edit: Walks also help. More so if nature is involved.

  • I've stopped adopting Google products and I think I recommend it for others as well. They limp in with something half-finished, don't get the adoption a mostly finished product would, then throw up their hands.

Im tryinf to de-cloud all together and expect I can get mostly there within the next 18 months.

If you have patience and a Raspberry Pi 4 or 5, I suspect it's a better and cheaper (and more future proof) solution.

  • I think he's vying to up his VP cred. Would make him useful, but maybe less of an idiot. Immoral? Yes. Idiot... Not entirely.

That's why we gotta watch out for him. He gets VP and Trump dies? I think it could be worse than many imagine.

  • That and the dash cam.

If you're worried enough about police integrity, have a dash cam and have it on. I've seen videos (rare) where the cop lied about speed and the dash cam was used to knock it down.

Even cheap ones could be used to figure out speed based on landmarks and time stamps. GPS speed would be more conclusive, though.

  • I was referred to a Huberman YT about sleep. What immediately happened to my feed was astounding and an obvious onramp to toxic masculinity. Jordan Peterson, Joe Rogan, DISCIPLINE, Optimize this and that, Alphas do this, sigmas fail because... And it's still sorting itself out months later;×I use down votes, not interested and all of that.

YT makes it easy for people to end up in places they shouldn't. But I'm sure there are a lot of views along the way.

That said, balance, discretion and never turning I to a creep who can't not objectify... Those are traits we should all maintain.

  • I'm almost embarrassed to admit, I found an online image of the colors of the sky through the day, pasted it into excel, and then capture 160+ rgb values for the sunset. It was a tedious process, but no math got it right.

I set all those values (and a warmer and cooler set) in the script and then pass in the desired duration. Most nights we have a 45 minute sunset play out across 6 total lights. Three sets of values, so the bulbs don't match.

Starts as soft white ending in the darkest twilight blue my bulbs can provide. We remark on it regularly and I think it's helped ease us into the right frame of mind for sleep.

I run the same values in reverse for sunrise.

    Clearly, its my favorite one.

  • The video title is "Depressed" not "Depressing."

He based that on the suicide rate. It's hard to have a metric for happiness/depression, but that's a credible one.

The article took liberties with the message.

He spoke directly with many people across South Korea. Interview style and not coming at it with a load of certanties.

By the second sentence he said, "South Korea."

I don't know why so many people here have to imagine a slight and then react against it.

  • It's going through the courts and I'm sure simply escalating has its own constitutional issue.

The military is not a police force. You are asking that we activate the thing Trump wants to use for authoritarian rule.

I'd rather have the all the guardsman found in contempt and then issued arrest warrants that are enforced. That's one example of what could happen.

  • It's a Texas owned park. The Feds are claiming it for a processing area.

That's where Texas appears to be staking their claim: it's ours and you can't take it under the Constitution.

Everything else is people on both sides dreaming up fantasy scenarios with little basis in what's likely. Yes, Texas will continue to escalate, but they aren't going to try to secede.

    From the article:

"On Friday, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton refused the federal government's request for access to the border and demanded proof that the federal government has the authority to turn a Texas park into a port of entry. "

I know Texas is picking and choosing the framing, but the above is what the AG (corrupt as he may be) is saying. Because he needs to win a case.
