  • The problem is that we don’t yet have a practical alternative to jet fuel, except high speed rail and Zoom. The technologies are all too young.

And it’s not just cost, it’s trying to make them useful enough. Batteries will not take you across a continent, for any cost.

We’re more at the stage of “fuck the cost. Give me another option to try”

  • It is a society thing. There were many ways I never got along with my ex mother in law …… but one of them was that if I forgot my soap or shampoo and used my wife’s she made a big deal of it. I mean I would thank her for (passive aggressively) complimenting my scent but that’s annoying.

It’s just soap and shampoo. I generally prefer unscented and strongly prefer something that doesn’t trigger my psoriasis but the bottom line is getting clean

  • Can older ones be had in reasonable condition for reasonable price? I never looked into those on the assumption they cost more and are not very common.

While I liked mg’s when I was younger, more recently I was a fan of Miata’s.

  • This is why we can never have good things. There’s always someone who doesn’t care about their fellow human beings, doesn’t care about acting shitty, doesn’t care that their choices impact others. Run into enough anti-social people who will not cooperate with society and the natural reaction is to establish a rule.

I would much prefer we have a civilized society where people care about their impact on others and equally care that others have a right to their preferences and we can all figure out how to live with each other. But people suck. Or too many people do

And yes, people do complain about excessive perfume, body odor, and flatulence. I personally would not legislate these because it’s a lot less frequent, a lot less potential lung damage to bystanders and people show shame. If I complain about someone having too much perfume or it triggers a perfectly normal allergic reaction reaction, you can bet they’ll be embarrassed and likely to try not to reoffend. If I complaint about smokers too close to an entrance stinking up my clothes, making me inhale their ashes, ruining my dining experience, do you really think they’ll be as accommodating?

  • If you’re a smoker you may be surprised at the distance your smoke impacts other people. The smell, the cloud, The ash extends far beyond a mere ten feet. Where I live the law is 20 feet from an entrance and that’s just not enough.

The problem is you can’t change your path from an entrance because you may have to enter and exit. The problem is further that multiple smokers tend to congregate at the mandated distance so the smoke is much worse. It needs to be significantly farther.

But then it’s worse again in a city area, where the sidewalks are also a bottleneck. I can’t always cross the street to avoid smokers but frequently have to pass right next to them. And I’d like to point out they are the ones inflicting their vice/addiction on others. It should not be my responsibility to get out of the way of their bad habit when their reasonable accommodation would not inflict it on others

  • Yeah, on the one hand I don’t like vapes as an enabler of bad habits, especially as edibles are so much more available now. Anything you breathe in is going to have a negative impact on your long term health. However vaping means you’re not inflicting your vice on anyone else and you’re avoiding most of the long term health impact of breathing in burnt leaves and chemicals. Vapes still stink but so much less and I can’t really claim second hand smoke danger

But so much the better that you show that courtesy to your fellow humans. Thank you

  • I came really close to doing that as a younger adult. At one point it was almost a club, so many co-workers had an older mg. Unfortunately they are no longer as plentiful or cheap.

Now I’m tempted from time to time but would never spend the time to care for it myself, which is one of the reasons to get an older vehicle.

At the moment I have the practical needs that both my kids are driving but sharing one car and can’t yet afford their own. This is the first summer that coordination will be a challenge. I took a Quick Look into long term rentals and short term leases and they’re just too expensive. I don’t want to buy them a car that will just sit and rot for 10 months they’re in college. I am so tempted to get myself another fun car. Maybe a project or classic. For the summer I’d have one more vehicle to share for the family. If there was an issue with my main car, I’d have an option. And if it’s a fun car for me I don’t mind having it the ten months of the year they’re in school

That Slate is so promising, but obviously more expensive than an older used car. I’d be tempted to get the open air configuration despite living in the northeast where it’s not practical most of the year

  • Roosevelt had time, that no other president ever will, and a much simpler world.

I’d argue there are a lot of parallels with what Biden was building. The investments made during his term could have really built our future, really changed our posture on the world stage. Not only built a better tomorrow but keep us in a position where we can lead, can influence, can bring the world together. Maybe I’m too naive but my biggest objection to his presidency was so many investments that really would have set us up in the decades to come, but not quickly enough to get him reelected. Not quickly enough to stay the course long enough to deliver the results. Now it’s all undone. All that investment thrown away, turned into a waste of money because it’s not allowed to deliver on its investment

  • I can remember all of my life the press ridiculing him for his ego and ostentatiousness, remember gold toilets, his name everywhere? I remember when it seemed like every other year he was taking another casino into bankruptcy. I remember continuously complaints where he stiffed employees and contractors, daring them to sue against his team of lawyers who would make it far more expensive than the money owed. I remember allegations of tax fraud over years and decades that somehow never got investigated.

I remember ridicule over the stupid tv show he funded to rehabilitate his image: did that actually work?

I remember the laughing the first time he wanted to run for president, and he crashed in flames as no one would take him seriously as a candidate

How did such a long history of incompetence, self-servicing corruption ever get turned around?

  • We very well may not recover the science and technology lead we had. Or medical - we may have a horrible system of healthcare but top notch development of treatments and technologies.

Or more importantly, we’re squandering the possibility of developing manufacturing for the next few decades on the attempt to develop manufacturing of the past.

And yes, immigrants. So much of what has made the us great has come from immigrants coming here to build a better life for themselves. So much of our economy, our innovation, our research, and yes our culture. If we succeed in driving away that flow, then we’re just another aging has been, with too many old people, not able to afford to maintain everything we built in the past

  • The thing is you can’t deny they are a center of science, research, innovation. Harvard is one institution that makes US stand out globally, and drives so much of what we think of as our exceptionalism. This truly is an attack on our future.

When my son was little, he had a very aggressive form of cancer. He came through it with treatment developed by Harvard research. In the couple decades before, Harvard directed research had driven mortality down from 90% to 10%. Now Trump wants to punish Harvard out of personal spite and one of the first things he does is cut research at Children’s hospital? How can you still call yourself human?

  • True, true, this is me too. I’ve got to admit to having to hold myself back from a full on outdoor kitchen. But I have a nice grill and a huge smoker, and I’ll be here every weekend wondering how to find people who want to share 15# of pulled pork or something.

I’ve actually gone overboard with cooking in general. Replaced teflon with cast iron and stainless steel, and a griddle top , and learned how to cook so many different foods from so many cuisines.

  • What about the stereotype of buying a flashy car? Arguably that’s the one I fell into: spending far more on a car than I ever have to get something flashy and different, and purely thinking of me for what felt like the first time in my life.

  • Just because it doesn’t solve the whole problem, doesn’t mean it’s not a good step forward.

I’m really encouraged that except for regressives in the us, the world seems to finally be turning toward renewable energy, EVs, high speed rail. Even in the US, cities are starting to build transit! There’s a couple more big steps. If we keep taking steps it will turn into moving forward!

  • Sure, as long as you’re not inflicting it on people trying to get in and out of the building.

Be aware that smoking has a very strong smell that you may not be entirely aware of since you’re around it all the time, plus you’re (hopefully) not asthmatic. You may be surprised how far away that should be

  • Nice. I think our only real outdoor restriction is “within 20’ of an entrance”. But it’s not enough.

That reminds me I need to complain to one of my favorite restaurants. They have an ash tray outside so people are less likely to litter and it is more than 20’ from the entrance. However it’s too close. When the patio is open, the smokers are just across the sidewalk and it ruins the meal
