  • Where I used to work, we had a massive digital library of android phones with confirmed exploits. They went up to quite recent phones and OS versions. The android team wasn't particularly big because there wasn't a major need for manpower to keep up. The iPhone team was highly specialized and had their work cut out for them. I wasn't on either team (Windows and sort-of OS X) but I fell into their meetings and wikis quite often due to platform overlaps.

And the latest and greatest wasn't necessarily what was getting attention anyway. Plenty of people worldwide use old phones

  • Am I missing something? Where did anyone specifically get accused of being an incel in this thread?

Discussion of influential figures in the broader 3D printing community is as valid as posts, videos, or articles about related tools, products, and news.

  • I concede that that may not be the case outside of the US. In my experience here, though, there's a whole world of apps and ecosystems that schools for children use now that I'd previously never heard of.

  • Yeah but if you don't have brightwheel or seesaw or whatever the fuck, you won't be getting important notifications. They only only call when you're late for pickup or your kid shit so bad you have to take them home. Some of these are tied to billing as well. Don't want to use My School Bucks? No aftercare or cafeteria breakfast/lunch. Sack lunch only.

It's a huge pain but in many cases there's no way around it.

I'm aware the original subject matter of this post is different, but the walled garden apps that you have to use no matter what start as soon as they enter preschool

  • I'm about to bootcamp myself out of my current career and into IT. My related experience is limited and this is a major (and costly) move for me. Cashing out an old 401k to finance it. Otherwise I'd be taking a predatory loan from Sallie Mae...

I'll be starting from scratch, probably doing entry-level work. But I'm ok with that because I'll eventually be able to better provide for my family, and I'm so broke and stressed that my hair is thinning. Check out springboard or thrivedx. My bootcamp is through them (haven't decided between software engineer or cybersecurity) but handled by a local university.

  • Ha I also asked my dad about it maybe 10-15 years ago. He's a huge scifi fan and I tore through his library of asimov, Heinlein, silverberg, Anderson, etc as a teen 10 years before that. He remains convinced that it's a satire from a conservative about dangerous conservatism. Which is funny to write as a lefty

  • I used to listen to JRE when it was just about wacky coast-to-coast-am type stuff, comedians, drugs, and mma. One of the lingering quotes that stick in my mind is Joe talking about how when someone is being an idiot or antagonistic, he imagines them as a little baby. How they used to be a blank slate of potential and now there's a long story leading up to this encounter. It apparently helped him calm down and try to be level headed.

What he was talking about is essentially sonder, "The profound feeling of realizing that everyone, including strangers passing in the street, has a life as complex as one's own, which they are constantly living despite one's personal lack of awareness of it."

Anyway, JRE is total garbage now and has been for years and years

  • To your last point, imo that is the single biggest hurdle. Initial sign up inherently creates what I like to call menu anxiety. The extra steps and the time involved is contrary to all popular practices. You have to start customizing your experience before you even know what you're getting into, which is the inverse of how it is done everywhere else.

And then there's the potential to join an instance that is too small, where existing users haven't yet subbed to communities that may interest new users. They won't know they exist (without searching externally) based on the feed. Changing instances isn't currently intuitive or appealing to regular potential users.

I'm currently okay with how things are. However, mainstream adoption just can't happen until the devs achieve their goals. I'm a huge fan of their work already. We're a long way away from 1.0 but I do believe we'll get there.
