Scary, since this could essentially establish a precedent that anyone who hosts DNS must concede to these types of demands. That includes Google, Meta, Verizon, CloudFlare, and every ISP on the planet. As well as the root servers.

Or, to put it in a simple one-liner: Instances are servers.

However you would set up any other server, you set up a Lemmy instance. There is no central datacenter as there would be with a corporate-owned site like Reddit.

Think of it like a bunch of little messages board sites and they automatically import posts from other message board sites - because that’s exactly what it is.

While that’s a bit different to navigate than what we are used to, an instance (aka a server) going down or becoming hostile and being defederated only removes that one server from the network.

It’s similar to how IRC networks function; except with those, the server owners decide what servers they link up with. With Lemmy (and other ActivityPub based services), the users decide (by subscribing). Instance admins can block (“defederate”) other instances though.

Honestly? 3 hours a day at any job should be enough for you to afford housing and food for yourself alone.

Also, fuck those hours, what job does UPS have that only requires 3 hours a day? The only reason they do that is because it’s cheaper to pay 2-3 people the part time pay and benefits than it is to take on a single full-time employee. Instead of hiring 2-3 part timers, and then making all those people also have 2-3 jobs, just fucking pay one person full time. Why does the cruelty have to be baked in? They’re not really making THAT much more profit. Fucking greedy and quality suffers for it.

I mean; that’s a sure fire way to have it all backfire isn’t it? When someone else tries to replicate it and it doesn’t work? And they all get called out for it being utter bullshit?

What is this absolute garbage take that scientists just making extraordinary claims for “prestige” or whatever? They’ll be laughed out of the profession if they’re intentionally lying in a paper.

Now, it could be that they think they’re on to something only to have it proven false for one reason or another (flawed experiment, incorrect hypothesis, unaccounted factors etc) but that’s more in line with how peer review works - it’s not the claim that makes you famous it’s the proof.

The amount of people I see on Lemmy saying “Ugh Google is so bad with all their Chrome shenanigans! I install Brave on my own and all my family’s computers!” is honestly heartbreaking 🤦‍♂️

YT algorithm favors videos that are at least 10 minutes (they fit more ads in) so those get recommended more. As a result, runtimes get padded with fluff so you get recommended to more viewers.

Let’s put it this way: if you stepped into a teleporter, the last think you’d ever experience is being disassembled. Doesn’t matter if it hurts or whatever. It just goes black. You die. You, YOU, will never see the other side. You won’t be the one to come out; it’s a clone of you.

Even if it is the very same atoms, the very same dendrites and synapses, reassembled perfectly.

Sure on the other end a replica would come out, presumably with all your memories etc intact, but it would not be you, you would not experience it. It would go on living your life, thinking it was you, everyone around it treating it like it was you, and presumably doing all the same things you would have done.

Except it is not you. Your experience ended at the teleporter. And many fools would never realize this, because the dead aren’t around to tell us.
