Porteus is a very specific distribution made to be run on a usb stick and not as an everyday system.

the slowness you find in ubuntu is mainly cause by the desktop environent it uses, namely gnome, try something with another desktop environement like xubuntu or the xfce variant of linux mint.

I have no intention to push you towards another distro since you will get more out of fixing issues on the one you have than just hopping, but what made you get nobara instead of a more tried and trusted distribution like base fedora, mint or arch derivatives ?

his interest toward cybersecurity means he probably is going to have to at least connect and reconnect to different networks, which will be a pain when not required to be wifi

You seem to have run in a few issues right off the gate, usually, one would just install steam through the distro's repositories, then let steam itself install whichever proton version they need need and run re game without any problems

You might get more success trying to fix the first installation process of steam failing than messing around with flat-packs and such.

whatever you get, don't sleep on the ethernet port, very few cheap laptops come with it nowadays, and that ill greatly reduce your selection

NixOS will make you cofee every morning, fix your car, make your waifu real and establish a long lasting commune system in your country of residence.

garuda, it's just a fancy arch install with the ugliest, bloatiest, default theming you can imagine, but once you get rid of it it's pretty solid.

This article reminded me of how I haven't run in a single dependency version conflict for years, I'm starting to get what debian users feel like seeing all this new distros fixing problems they never had in the first place

I wish there was a better way to judge the lightness of full desktop environements than just ram consumption, because speed and smoothness can vary greatly regardless of ram, so we know whether of not it runs well on shitty laptop, lxqt being no faster than xfce in my experience is pretty telling of that

I doesn't deserve the hate it gets, it's not that big of a project but it's being treated like it pushed kids to kill themselves, the devs fucked up a few times and made some questionable decision (freeoffice...) but they put upe a nice working distro and aren't completely insane like the gnome/ubuntu devs
