  • Well I'm neither of those. I'm not a tech bro and I don't really understand computers well or what a tick tock does. I'm just an old dude who's been using standard desktop stuff since windows 3.1 and DOS before that.

You should install Linux unless you absolutely need either commercial architecture software or Excel for specific things.

MS is the devil and windows sucks balls. I use windows on a work machine and it is objectively worse than most Linux flavours.

Start on Mint or KDE Neon if you're coming from windows.

As they say, don't knock it till you try it.

  • Its not new, its just a different platform. Pub, forum, market, square, plaza, community hall, water cooler. Humans are fundamentally social animals and there have always been public forums were the community gathers to meet, chat, and share news and gossip. Those physical places have essentially all been wiped out in modern western countries now as it let's all people in an area gather and share ideas. That's really bad for capitalism and for our increasingly fascist governments. So they close the pubs, run roads the the forums and close the markers to build a new Walmart. Social media is there now to provide for the need but to do it in a a way that divides people instead of bringing them together, and controls what they see and hear so they stay compliant.

  • Nah fuck that.

Number 1 - the world exists outside the USA and a lot of those fuckers live there.

And Number 2 - kiddie fiddlers don't get rights and if you can get them through entrapment the its just as good as any other means.

  • I have like 10 tabs open right now reading all through Kagi's offering, search sources, and a bunch of Small Web stuff now. Going to give it a trial run this week and see how it performs, but I'm pretty convinced so far. Haven't used google for a whole now but still, pulling search straight from google or bing via third parties still gives shitty results as the whole ecosystem rapidly decays

  • Editing this reply to say that I was in fact right and I did not have any fundamental misunderstanding of anything. And the database in question here is called LAIOn and contains 6 billions images scraped from the web, including CSAM images.

Thanks for that. As I said, I'm not big into how AI works, so not surprised I got that wrong. The databases of everything that has come across the clear web are still there though and are available for use by people with access.

  • (Apologies if I use the wrong terminology here, I'm not an AI expert, just have a fact to share)

The really fucked part is that at least google has scraped a whole lot of CSAM as well as things like ISIS execution bids etc and they have all this stuff stored and use it to do things like train the algorithms for AIs. They refuse to delete this material as they claim that they just find the stuff and aren't responsible for what it is.

Getting an AI image generator to produce CSAM means it knows what to show. So why is the individual in jail and not the tech bros?

  • Governments. The internet and the knowledge it gives to people is the same public good as roads, water, power, sewerage, etc. All of these in a reasonable modern society need to be owned and maintained by the government through taxation and provided to the public for free.

  • This is no different than every other capitalist enterprise. The whole system works on taking a public resource, claiming private ownership of it, and then selling it back to the public for profit.

First it was farmland, then coal and minerals, oil, seafood, and now ideas. Its how the system works and is the whole reason people have been trying to stop it for the past 150 years.

The people making the laws are there because they and/or their parents and/or grandparents did the exact same thing. As despicable and corrupt as it is you won't change it by complaining and no-one is going to make a law to stop it.

  • What is your issue with installation exactly? I must have done 200+ installs of 2 dozen distros (not you Arch) and its always been smooth and easy. And quick. Like, the whole process only takes 15 minutes for most distros

  • Time to start moving away from google services there mate. This behaviiur is only getting worse with time, and don't get me started on the tracking. There are plenty of FOSS apps to do pretty much anything you need to do on an Android device

Antennapod is a great podcast app. I have behind the bastards on there right now!

  • Ive used Firefox and chrome for a long time side by side and on a daily use basis there is not any discernable difference that's caused by the browser. On Firefox, add the extensions ublock origin, privacy badger, and decrentraleyes to start with, and I'd recommend changing default search to duckduckgo or start page as well. Your entire web experience will be massively improved (Yes ddg and start page look and feel different. Search results are the same but without all the ads and misdirects)

  • Explain how , like with examples. I use both every day plus like 4 other browsers and there is no difference a normal user could possible see between the two. All browser have slightly different layouts and features but all at this point have surface functionality that's essentially the same What the hell are you seeing in Firefox that is "slow and clunky"
