  • I thought the gas tax was a fixed number rather than a percentage, wouldn't that mean the revenue would stay the same?

  • It's already fallen pretty drastically these past 6 months or so. It's around $2.89 near me which is a full dollar less than it was over the summer.

  • I really wish it wasn't so bloody effective. I absolutely HATE micro-transaction games. At least for the moment there are still good choices on PC or the consoles where you can just buy a game and play it. Mobile gaming has turned into an absolute cesspool.

  • If we can get one built before the election, we can fire Trump out of it and into the sun.

  • No reason why not. May be a little power-hungry depending on the spec but if you already have it go for it. FreeNAS (now TrueNAS) is the usually suggested OS to run: https://www.truenas.com/freenas/

Since you have 4 HDD slots probably run 4 disks in a RAID 5 so think of how much space you need. RAID 5 is n-1 so if you have 4x 10TB drives you will be left with 30TB of space before formatting. You can calculate here: https://www.raid-calculator.com/

Then either mirror the SSDs for OS and caching or just use one. Depends on your budget really.

  • Of course the can pay their drivers but think of the poor shareholders who may see 0.1% less profit or the CEO who may get only 99% of their usual bonus. Oh the horror!!

  • Be the change you want to see in the world, TacoButtPlug.

  • I don't think the problem is "we" securing things (we being cybersecurity professionals). I think the problem is companies seeing that it's cheaper to take the PR hit, pay the ransom, pay for cybersecurity insurance, etc than it is to pay for a properly secured network.

Cybersecurity is hard (citation needed) and costs a lot of money (citation needed). If a company figures it's cheaper to have a breach and deal with the fallout than it is to properly secure shit I can promise you what will happen.

    As always, follow the $$$.

  • Honestly, this is what scares the fuck out of me. I feel like COVID was just a sample of what's to come. Between anti-vaxxers and climate change we are going to be in for a wild ride.

  • While true, I'm not convinced that fully explains it. Having been in IT nearly 2 decades I feel like the second piece is cybersecurity budgets getting slashed. A lot of them have been super-basic shit like someone clicking on a malicious link.

  • Science: We've eradicated many diseases through vaccines!

    Republicans: Hold my beer!

  • Is it just me or has 2023 been the year of the data breach? Maybe they are just larger or more widely reported. Just seems like there have been a fuck-ton of them this past year.

  • That's the neat part, you don't. That's a feature not a bug.

  • Which smart TV blocklist are you using? Should probably add that into my pihole.

  • Could we somehow capture the steam from all the kettles to turn a turbine? I see zero problems with this plan.
