Welcome to the Melbourne Community Daily Discussion Thread.
My lovely daughter comes home yesterday all excited because she spotted all these white butterflies around on her way home. She even took photos. She was so happy. Now as a mother it's my job to tell her the truth. I crushed that little girl's heart with a "no sweetie. They are cabbage moths. They're a pest. They eat hard working Australians crops". Not to be out done she replied with "They're still pretty". Bless her little cotton socks.
She's right, they are pretty. 😊
Lol TIL too! I thought they were butterflies too hahaha
So this is the second week I've had my period, and last time this kind of stuff happened I never talked to the doctor about it (medical trauma and obviously cptsd from SA) but it's happening again... So I have to go see my GP, tho I may request a lady doctor to hopefully ease my worries.
Low-key hoping that my uterus is damaged beyond repair and has to be removed. #goals
This organ is nothing but pain and annoyance and though it's doesn't make much sense, whenever I think of it being removed I think of Mike Wazowski: "Put that thing back where came from, or so help me, so help me, so help me, and cut!"
Yeet the thing if you can! Wish the wretched organ came with an on/off switch. Yes, I’m sure I don’t want to use this right now, hibernate mode GO! (I got mine disconnected, but unfortunately it still works)
You poor thing! 🫂
so many gentle hugs
+1 on a woman doctor for anything uterus related. I always ask.
Weird how I have the whole cinema to myself at 10am on a school/work day 😎
I thought that was a keyboard.
7 people here with me but ticket is $10
edit: the number has tripled
1 more person came to my session lol
Go go Docklands! Sadly no $10 ticket though.
KITTENS!!
I don't have anything important to say but I'm becoming really good at getting wasps out of the house. Give them a little hand gesture and they know where the window is. They are more aware than we think.. They know things.
Come back when you have learned the way of the mosquito and you will never worry for fame or money ever again.
One of your mates got in my car the other day. It got in. I got out. It got very close to buckling up in the backseat before I open the door and nicely asked it to "Get out".
How are they getting in though? That’s worrying me.
Wasps are not real. They're drones who are spying on you for big everything.
I don't know if it is emotions getting blunted or just that having had a much wider range of experiences the extremes needed to trigger strong emotions are much rarer. When you have little experience of food every meal has a high chance of being the best thing you have ever tasted by a strong margin (or the worst!). But eventually you get to the stage where you have tried so many things that the chances of any one thing being the best are slim, and if it is, it is not generally by a wide margin. I imagine that if you could recreate something as dramatically different as your first taste of sugar your emotions would be just as strong.
I believe the tendency to become less adventurous as we age is down to the same thing. The chances of a new recipe being better than the best recipe we have discovered so far gets lower and lower as we go along, until we get to the point that trying new things becomes more likely to be a negative than a positive. But doing this creates even less likelihood of having an experience that triggers strong emotions - which is why some people go to the opposite extreme of chasing adventure and looking for dramatically new experiences.
Same here, my emotions aren't as extreme as when I was younger. Something I experienced when I was younger that would be very keenly felt is now more of a "meh" for me. However I still get angry the same, I still get cross at everything! I suffered from an anxiety disorder and had PTSD from around 2006 for about years, so everything feels less anxious compared to then lol.
Yeah but I think there's different reasons for everybody. For me I've never really been a stressy person but when I had a child even less stressy because I didn't want her to pick up on it.
I can relate to that.. I think having a child really helped me too, for the same reason.
Same as you I don't get excited much any more (late 40's here), but I am -definitely- much grumpier now than I used to be. Nothing used to worry me back in the day, but now I'm constantly having to catch myself and shut my mouth before I grumpily complain about so many things.
It's a trait I don't like and do my best to suppress, but sometimes it slips through. My internal dialogue is just constant grumpiness these days and I hate it!
No, I am just as intense and wild as ever.
I do try my best to appear calm and i do hold my tongue
Is frustration an emotion? I don't really get angry or excited that much, but holy shit do I get frustrated at little things (90% of the time it's people doing stupid little things). The frustration leaves quickly, but it's pretty intense when it hits.
Overall though, yeah. Way less emotional swings.
incoherent noises
Th garden is growing so well in this weather. 😊
I told myself I was going to get some work done today (and got up at 8:30am so not bad...) But it's not happening yet. I am frozen and somehow crave interaction to kick start my brain. I do have a few hours I have to spend in a library between appointments later today though, so that might generate some action, being away from home with my laptop.
Graffiti and vandalism annoys me so much. It makes me really really angry. Why can't people just not fucking destroy things that benefit everyone?
I keep seeing anti-Semitic and nazi graffiti around carlton 😔 tagging is shit but at least it isn't evil
this week is sucking the will to live out of me. I dont know why, but it is just exhausting. Felt like we faced 2 Mondays in a row.
TIL the container deposit scheme won't take crushed cans.
gotta be able to read the barcode.
Depending on where you are, there may be an app that lets you check eligibility on the fly
My local recycling joint (in WA) takes them crushed. The technology exists. Are the recyclers in Victoria privately operated like the ones here are?
I expect that it needs to read a barcode or some other ID to recognise if the container is eligible for refund? Just my guess. This is the kind of info government should explain, so people understand the reasons and don’t waste their time crushing cans.
I had just bought a soft drink can crusher THEN heard how the container deposit scheme wants them uncrushed for the barcode to be read.
Oh well. I still have a crusher..
Ok so don't nap when you had a poor nights sleep the night before. Or set an alarm or something. 2 and a half hours GONE and I don't love my chances of sleeping well tonight!
@CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone Sorry but those little white butterflies are just so cute
Try growing some veggies and I guarantee you your tune will change...
Hahaha. Well those insects are invading little dog's yard and he don't like it.
Cabbage moths. All through my street today. Cabbage moths
My new job is a finished by midmorning/midday unless something trickles in sort of job, and the feeling is so weird. Like technically I'm done for the day, but now I have to sit there and click about my screen or make small talk with my neighbour. After my last job I'm totally not complaining, but damn!
That can get old very quickly. Being paid to be bored isn’t all it might seem at first.
Oh totally! Although it's a bit easier to stomach at home though because you can get things done, which will come in handy when I go back to school next year.
The Marvels - my quick mostly spoiler-free review but read at your peril: ::: spoiler spoiler That was GREAT! I had a really good time watching it. Even though sometimes it was a little predictable, that didn't take away the joy of the film and it still managed to surprise me a few times. Kamala is an absolute delight throughout. The scenes on Aladna and the space station exit (as vague as I can think to refer to it) were huge standouts and I found myself grinning like an idiot through them. Definitely a return to form for the MCU in my opinion. I did spot a tiny plot hole at the end which wasn't really addressed but I expect they'll explain in a future project. Also the switching when using powers seemed to be a bit random to me but when they got good at doing it and put it into practice, that scene was BADASS.
Also the mid-credits scene.. OH HELL YEAH GET HYPE! :::
I'm planning on seeing it tomorrow! So excited!
Have definitely got the CBFs today. And Sammi is very snuggly.
I had vague plans of tackling the bags in Mum's old room that I shoved things in to clear up for the inspections, but Zooks has nominated Mum's bed as one of her nap spots and is doing just that. Couldn't possibly disturb her. 😉
My recycle bin is the clinkiest in the street. By far.
My recycling bin is mostly cat food tins
Hahaha. Mine is mostly boxes but that doesn't dampen the sound of clink clink clink. I wanted to yell "It was a special weekend alright".
I can report that there are flowers, AND 3 tiny green berries on the tomato plants. Woohoo now I just have to patiently watch them grow.
There are 3 different custards in my fridge. I think there might be a custard-off tonight.
Three custards enter.
One custard leaves.
A WINNER.
(They all get a participation badge though)
How did you end up with three distinct custards?
Good question. I went to Aldi yesterday and I saw it there and went "yep I need that for my pudding". Then last night I read something about Golden Gaytime Toffee custard so I decided I needed that. While I was there I spotted Farmhouse custard which is a good custard that I cannot refuse.
Ok try 2 at my little DIWHY home repair. Figured out the paint colour. Its a Dulux natural white aquanamel satin finish (so go to Bunnings and ask them to tint it is what the Dulux guy told me). Then, ask for a small piece of timber or something I can stick at the back with some glue for stability and then rinse and repeat the putty process. Also get a 4mm mini roller kit for the painting. Got it. Peanut brain hard at work.
I'm thinking a couple of icypole sticks would probably work well for the wood support. You may need to eat a couple of icecreams to get them, a very worthwhile sacrifice.
i volunteer as tribute
Oh great idea! I'll try Bunnings and see if I can snag a freebie but if not will get the icypole. Probably will need 3 or 4 but not a problem!
Where are the Optus whistleblowers to leak what happened? Must be pretty embarrassing or Optus would have said by now.
Robbo kicked the plug out of the socket, Bruce wasn't around to fix it and Keith chucked a sickie.
And Gladys stood around setting fires rather than help.
This may not be that far from the truth. Given that it happened at a time where planned outages are generally scheduled, it's probably from rolling out some sort of intentional change. Whether that's a configuration change, or a firmware update of some sort, it was likely done on purpose at 3am.
Then when it inevitably broke everything as it took effect, the rollback plan failed. And yeah - it's 4am and neither Bruce or Keith are in the office to fix it. The hilarious part is both Bruce and Keith almost definitely have Optus for all their contact details (Internet, mobile, landline) and the poor person managing the change couldn't wake them up.
I suspect they will announce the cause at some point. Something this big would have trouble staying internal with an organisation with that many employees.

Very humid on my run this morning. Doggo will get a hair cut tomorrow which will help him out a bit.
Mold on the tent
Canvas or acrylic?
Cat has fleas. House is probably infested.
I'm a law clerk. It's suits every day. My suits are dry-clean only, and there's a very real risk that they could be infested too.
What the fuck do I do here? They're new suits. I can't afford new clothes right now, and we need to start flea treating everything, and apparently it can take a year to deal with the problem.
Very stuck. Thoughts guys?
I believe the trick is to interrupt breeding for each generation of fleas - that is, kill everything that's currently active so they can't continue to lay eggs, then kill the next generation before it's old enough to lay more eggs.
The exact timing depends on the species of flea/tick/mange mite. There are several different kinds, all with different timings. And a few days makes a huge difference.
Maybe consult a vet for the latest information on what to do, when to do it, and what to use.
This field is constantly evolving, as pest resistance evolves, so what worked 5 years ago may not be effective now. For example, back in my youth you could just wash everything with gamma wash. That's almost wholly ineffective now.
Generation interruption is the key. Send everything vital to the laundry. Pill bomb or neck drop cat. Cat to a friend or board for the day. Fume bomb house. Vac like a lunatic.
Fleas aren’t as bad as bedbugs. You can kill them.
Do NOT give a cat flea kill pills for dogs, you will have no cat.
You’ll be okay. At least it isn’t bedbugs.
Give the cat a monthly spot on like Advocate or Advantage and wash all the pet bedding and your casual clothes on the hottest cycle they can stand. Tumble dry if possible. (Ikea sell space saver bags cheap if you want to use them for storage.)
Sometimes you can put delicate clothes in the dryer to kill eggs without damaging the clothes as long as the items are clean and dry. Long gentle toast. Otherwise vacuum or dry clean the suits and hang them up in suit bags.
Vacuum daily and thoroughly, focusing especially on crevices, furniture and anywhere the cat has been. Empty the vacuum right after each time into a bag, tie it and discard in the outside bin.
Putting an encasement on your mattress is a good move.
If it turns out to be a stubborn infestation there are absolutely more options.
Just the 2 of us tonight for dinner. Had 2 chicken thighs in the freezer. Diced chicken and dusted in plain flour and flavours (S&P, garlic & onion powders). Once all cooked tossed in the pan with some teriyaki sauce.
Should've used cornflour. Coating on chicken went a bit puffy. Great for soaking saucy flavour but not quite that great takeaway chicken texture I was hoping for.
Served with mixed veg & ramen noodles with a bit of chicken stock for taste.
No photos (quickly devoured) but all eaten by my fussy 8yo boy so a MASSIVE win!
Pretty happy considering I hate cooking and was in no mood for it tonight.
Sounds divine! Breast enjoyers can get out. Thighs are where it's at
Thighs are impeckable
Seeing all the camping/hiking stuff out has me HYPEDDDDDDD!!!!!!
So, on the other site I came across the term "terminal uniqueness" in relation to a discussion about diagnoses of neurodivergence and whether people are quick to jump on labels to explain why they feel they struggle with life and to try and feel special and exempt rather than working productively with the diagnosis.
It's a fascinating phrase that has its roots in addiction recovery and is also known more simply as "personal exceptionalism". But honestly I think the concept can be applied much more broadly to many aspects of modern life and mediated discussions of mental health. and I'm embarrassed to admit I definitely felt that way about myself when I was younger. Maybe sometimes I still do.
Damn straight it's a fascinating phrase. Haven't heard it before, but I've seen the phenomenon many many times in various ways. I think part of it stems from simple lack of a large enough database of experience. And it's so so tempting to slap on a label, pop the fashionable pill and stop thinking and receiving information and examining alternatives. Have you read Temple Grandin's marvellous book An Anthropologist on Mars? Or any of Oliver Sachs' works?
The Oliver Sacks books are fascinating. I must put Temples book on the to read list.
I've long been recommended to read Oliver Sacks books - for years. I confess my reading has been in the drain for a while now due to too much phone use. Definitely worth reading now that I have the time. Same with Temple Grandin, I did watch the movie about her life years ago ...
Thanks for sharing, I have definitely noticed this but never had a word for it. With the eagerness for labels, I think there’s something else going on too. Labels can give people a sense of belonging. So it’s an overlap of feeling special individually plus feeling part of a tribe. Not saying neurodivergence doesn’t exist, but I do sometimes get unsettled when people label human experience that I consider to be just normal, to be something clinical. No, sometimes lost keys and procrastinating over doing the dishes are just lost keys and dishes. Can we just be allowed to be human.
I read through that article. I definitely think people use different diagnoses to excuse their behaviour and choices, rather than taking that information and using it to their advantage.
Oh Temu. You impress me with your shit. I don't need a dumpling maker.............or do I?
The goddess Anoia will be pleased to accept the dumpling maker as another item to be stuck in drawers. Along with all those silly little corn cob holders shaped like ears of corn and the spare lemon squeezer and of course the spare ladle.
Bunnings guy suggested I use expanding foam instead - so that's what I have gone for. It's gross ew. Last try, if this doesn't work then I will get it done by some dude on airtasker. Gah why couldn't this have been on a wall instead would've been much easier
You can do the thing! (I am so invested in this bloody door saga btw...)
Thanks for the vote of confidence 🥲🥲
Plant package #2 arrived today. I planted one of the four plants, and mulched and watered the ones I planted yesterday. The beans I planted a while ago have now sprouted too. I was a bit worried about them as they were taking a while, so I'm happy to see them up.
