What operating system do you use on your main computer?
What operating system do you use on your main computer?
Windows 11. Don't @ me, I don't have the mental or physical energy to deal with Linux. I've never had a Linux install that's had close to everything working, there's always a device (network, sound, graphics, usb toaster) that doesn't work and attempts to follow people's instructions to fix it either make it worse or just do nothing.
Maybe I'm just useless or unlucky, but I'm due to die in a few decades and I don't have time to deal with that nonsense when Windows does everything I want it to.
theres wayyy more windows 11 users than linux users but this is the one place the "enlightened pc users" cam flex their ability to navigate a command prompt
windows runs fine, plays every game, software is generally made for it, people who dont like it have a very niche issue with it which is fine
but its a good OS if you just want to use your computer like a normal human
Windows has a command prompt, and you can even install a Linux shell on it and use that if you need/want to these days. Windows Subsystem for Linux.
Windows 11 user here too. I just install WSL (Windows Subsystem for Linux) as an alternative as I'm too used to the Windows interface. Maybe one day I'll fully switch.
WSL was cool but couldn't do all the things I need
Recently switched back to Windows. I had Pop OS working pretty well with some workarounds for some of my favorite games, but taking time to get them working was draining.
that's ok we all have our reasons to use whatever we are using. Im using windows but dual boot arch sometimes for coding because I own a 9 year old nvidia card. Fuck you nvidia ! I will switch uninstall windows as soon as I have enough money to upgrade to an amd gpu.
I use windows 10 simply because it just works for my needs. Its just customizable enough for me and I've tried Linux and it's too much effort to get everything I use working on there. I mostly use my PC for gaming anyways and then my laptop for work.
My entire homelab is Linux based. Still use Windows on my desktop.
I totally get that Linux is excellent, but the Linux community can be exhausting sometimes.
"It's so easy to use these days!" is rapidly followed by "You just need to grep the package and recompile it for your kernel."
I heard a saying once, "Linux is for people who don't value their time"
Thought it was pretty funny
TempleOS
Chad OS enjoyer
I had a teacher in tech school that had MenuetOS (assembler) as his main OS.
Chad spoted
Absolute chad
macOS
Arch Linux with Hyprland and no GUI apps except Firefox and Steam, I don't even have a file manager
Are you the guy on the Linux memes made by Windows users?
Damn, I almost have the exact same setup, but I have some GUI apps.
I use Arch btw
i use arch btw
Windows10, cause I'm a basic bitch. I've tried to run Linux a couple times years ago, but games not running properly and me not getting over the learning curve always got in the way.
You should give it another go now then. Gaming on Linux is very good nowadays with many games supporting the OS directly (even more now thanks to SteamDeck) and there are many ways to run even games that don't. Also, there is a lot of Linux distributions that are extremely easy to setup and maintain.
Arch Linux (BTW)
I use Arch Linux. I love it. 😸
Arch btw
Puts chain mail on
Sigh..
Windows. Because gaming.
Windows isn't a bad OS. It's not perfect but neither is Linux. I use Windows because I love .NET and because of gaming.
Arch.
Activate Windows
Go to setting to activate Windows
All of them using KDE.
You can use btrfs on Windows ? How is the performance ?
MacOS
Windows.
Even when I was working ON UNIX (like, with people making the OS), we were all windows+vanDyke+Mozilla, because windows was the most reliable platform for that.
Haven't changed, even if I'm waiting for ReactOS eagerly. It's win10+putty+SeaMonkey until then.
Gentoo with a custom tiling window manager written in x86 assembly in my free time.
Just kidding, I use Windows.
Windows 10. I'm comfortable with it. I'm not sure what I'll do when the times comes to move to 11 because I don't like what I see going on over there. My main excuse was always comfort and gaming but the Steam Deck is showing me that gaming isn't as much of a barrier as it used to be.
For me the only reason I don’t fully switch over is apps like photoshop and illustrator. There’s lots of FOSS that does the exact same function, but I’m very used to the keyboard commands and workflow of adobe so it’s hard for me to fully switch.
That said, I run Ubuntu and Fedora as daily drivers for like 95% of my daily computer needs. Just have to boot into windows every now and then for those things.
Can always run a linux distro with a windows VM in virtualbox to access those softwares when you need them.
I do the exact opposite rn but my plan is to switch them... whenever I get around to it......
Arch linux
I'm also using Arch and nearly ashamed to say it because of all the memes.
Linux Mint for desktops. Debian for servers.
Linux Mint.
Arch Linux + Sway
sobs jealously in Nvidia
Hopefully sway will eventually be able to support your setup!
Arch Linux with KDE
Windows regretfully. Only because of certain games who's anticheat won't work on Linux with proton and such. Waiting for the day I can get rid of it!
In this same spot.
Debian. On every computer with a physical keyboard. And all servers. Mainly because of philosophy, stability, release cycle (2 years for major updates which I find neither too longnkor too short) and having gotten (is that proper english lol) used to it.
I use arch Linux just fyi
Or BTW?
Arch Linux on all computers for the last 10 years or so :)
Same, and although it's treated me well I wouldn't recommend it to everyone. If you're interested in learning more about how the parts of an OS work together it's great and you end up with a system customized to your needs and preferences but it's also a decent number of hours of learning and work to get something comparable to what other Linux distros are out of the box.
My work laptop runs Ubuntu, my home PC runs Windows 10. I used Mac OS in my last job. I'm not really picky about it.
Linux (Pop OS) . It's amazing how seamless gaming has become with Steam and Proton. Never thought I'd use Linux on my main PC but here we are! There are still issues but hopefully it keeps improving
UBUNTU <3
I use Manjaro. I know not everyone likes it but it's an easy way to get into Arch based distros and i really like the rolling updates instead of incremental. I still use Ubuntu for servers at the moment.
What do people have against Manjaro?
Dependency hell.
Windows 10. And seeing the replies of our fellow fediversers, I think I’m not mainstream here 🤣
I spend most of my time in Linux but IMHO I don't think any desktop experience comes close to Windows. WSL2 is a lovely way of bringing the two together.
Nah, most people use windows. It's just that most of them don't care about such things.
macOS on a Hackintosh. It’s stable AF, and I love it. Use it for work and music production. Then I dual boot Windows 10 for games.
What’s your specs? I’m running a pretty old X99 build. The dual boot is my favourite part and when I eventually get a Mac Studio that’s what I am gonna miss the most.
B365 build here (2020 build).
I'm going to miss Hackintoshing and (same as you) dual booting when they go full ARM-only. But I'll probably still rock this build for at least the next 3 years before upgrading to a Mac Studio or a Mac Mini.
I use Windows 11 and honestly am pretty happy with it. My laptop runs on fedora. I would Consider Switching to Linux on my Desktop but i do music production and some of my soft and Hardware (NI maschine mk3 and some VSTs) dont run on Linux. As long as that is the case, Switching doesnt make sense for me.
Edit: if anyone has suggestions how to get maschine, vsts from NI komplete and VSTs in General to run on Linux, i would be super happy. As a second DAW i usw bitwig which supports linux but as all my other stuff is windows Based im pretty much tied to Microsoft
I use Windows 11 -- mildly modified -- StartAllBack for a proper start menu and taskbar experience. I have it pretty much exactly as I want it without any annoyances.
I'm perfectly comfortable with Linux but I feel the same as you about using it on the desktop for all the same reasons.
Same here. Tried so many different versions of Linux and none have been stable so back on Windows 11.
I'm a windows user but recently I've been thinking that I'd like to learn linux - so I rented a cheap docker server - it's still sat there untouched for now! Can I ask you: how did you get into linux, what do you really like about it and do you have any thoughts on if starting with a docker server is a good way forward to learning linux?
TIL that KDE Plasma is probably the most represented DE on Lemmy 😍
Linux Mint. When it first came out, it was the first distro where sound and wifi worked out of the box on fresh installations by shipping with restricted drivers. It made installations so easy that I just stopped trying other distros.
Fedora Linux. I was skeptical at the beginning but I am glad I switched from Windows.
EndeavourOS on my laptop, Pop!_OS on my gaming PC.
Linux Mint. Never needed anything else, and hopefully it'll stay this way..
Pop OS on my System 76 desktop (Thelio Mira). Couldn't be happier with it.
Endeavour OS
Windows 11
Fedora Workstation.
Just installed Fedora Kinoite. I'm running immutably now
Fedora Silverblue. But since Fedora aims to include telemetry (although in a reasonable way) by version 40, I'll switch soon to something else. I feel it might be time to give BSD an honest attempt.
I just hope we get more immutable distros by then.
There already are a few: https://itsfoss.com/immutable-linux-distros/ and Ubuntu seems to work towards an immutable future as well, I think it's where most distros well be in a few years. The transition needs time though.
MacOS for work. OpenSUSE Tumbleweed on my private.
MacOS. Looks like there's tens of us on Lemmy. Tens!
Linux openSUSE
I use arch btw. I am waiting for vanilla os v2 for my laptop though, I think it would be great for a device which I want to "just work". Rn it has Ubuntu with some dell repos which have not been updated since Ubuntu 20.
Linux (Arch with KDE Plasma)
Pop!_OS (Linux)
Pop!_OS for desktop, FreeBSD for server
Heavy gamer here. My main Distro is EndeavourOS, came from Linux Mint months ago. My homelab runs on Ubuntu Server.
Why did you switch from Mint to endeavour?
Yes, about 8 Months ago...
I use Arch btw
Arch Linux
Debian 12
I have win11 and Pop_OS! on separate drives.
Kubuntu on my Laptop, Windows 11/KDE Neon dualboot on my gaming pc.
Ubuntu
I'm not sure which one is my main. I have an old MacBook Air, haven't updated the OS in a long time because I got tired of MacOS becoming merged with iOS. I have a desktop that dual boots between Windows 10 and Ubuntu. I use them all about the same amount. Honestly, I use my phone more than either.
EndeavourOS with GNOME!
Proxmox.
I spin up VM's and pass through my graphics card. If I'm studying I'll but into kbuntu. If I'm playing or streaming video games, windows 10. I also have several VMs for different purposes. A Win10 with quicken for tracking family expenses. A Proxmox backup server to house backup images from my primary Proxmox cluster, using three old PCs. As an example.
Can you say more about this? The video card you're passing through is on the Proxmox server, yes? Then you're booting VMs and connecting via a thin client?
No lag issues? Are you connecting local USB devices to your thin client? What about video conferencing?
"The video card you're passing through is on the Proxmox server, yes?"
Yes, although my gaming PC itself is the Proxmox Server. So I plug the monitor directly into it. I also have some thin clients that can play the game remotely from the host. A Steamlink and a Steamdeck, and as long as they're on the same wifi network it works great!
The benefit for me is I can move between different operating systems like dual booting, but it's way easier to pivot to a whole new OS.
Techno Tim has a YouTube video that I watched a few years ago that sparked the idea. Google Techno Tim Remote Gaming or follow this link if you'd like to watch more.
Windows 10 dual boot with crystalOS for coding
Is this OS actively developed (crystalOS)? Do you have a link to the project page?
kinda, here it is https://getcryst.al/site
For everything but VR, Arch Linux with KDE Plasma. For VR, Windows 10
I've played VR on Linux before with my Vive but it's definitely not feature complete yet. I just got Knuckles for it though so I've been using the Vive with them a lot recently, so I might start trying it more often. The lack of desktop view in SteamVR on Linux is really annoying though (I got it to work once, but that was the only thing that worked at the time lol)
I just switched to Linux with PopOS about a month ago. My aging HDD is about to die because of bad sectors, and I was able to get myself a great deal on a 1 TB Crucial P3. Got it and decided to install Linux instead of cloning my HDD.
There are minor pains of using Linux over Windows and trying to run Windows programs on it, but it is so much better now compared to even just a year or so ago.
I've not really played with Linux Distros much in the past several years due to windows ERP software at work. It's it still Wine or are there better solutions now for those windows only programs?
Wine is fucking fantastic now, and by extension dxvk, vkd3d, proton, etc
Arch with KDE on my desktop where I play games and fuck around, Manjaro KDE on my work laptop, Debian on my servers. Doesn't get much better than that.
Arch on desktop and laptop, debian on server.
Have to use Win 11 on my work laptop though
Debian Bookworm, I like to live on the edge. The extremely stable edge.
Pop OS from the start of the year. The Steam Deck showed be his far Linux gaming has come, no issues running the things I play. Glad to be rid of Windows
Fedora Workstation 38. Dual boot Windows on a separate drive, but this is solely for gaming. I know gaming on Linux has gotten better, but I want the best experience, which is much easier on Windows.
My main system is a Dell Wyse 5070 Extended running Pop-OS, but its main purpose is to be small on my desktop while being just enough computer to run ThinLinc (which is like RDP for Linux). ThinLinc connects to a much more powerful VM in my Proxmox cluster that runs Debian 11, which is my "real" desktop where I spend all of my time.
However, I'm currently working on setting up a new server with a better CPU, more RAM and a Tesla P4, after which my "real" desktop will be a Nobara 38 VM (based on Fedora) with the Tesla card passed through.
I don’t think I understood a single word
EndeavourOS
That's what I run too. It's a dead easy distro to get along with.
Dual boot Windows 11 and EndeavourOS on KDE
Ubuntu :)
MacOS Ventura
Linux
Opensuse Tumbleweed
Runit Artix
Windows on PC for gaming, Linux on work laptop for development
Windows 11 on my gaming rig, macOS for all other computing tasks. If I could reliably game on a Mac with good quality, I would. I did some Linux gaming for awhile and was really glad that it had come a long way, but I like not having to think about any kind of technical troubleshooting (usually) when gaming on Windows. And the overall usability of a unix OS is hard to beat.
Windows 11 is my newest "main" computer. I also just got a nice Win 11 laptop for my new business.
Though my "working" IT laptop boots with both Windows 10 and Ubuntu.
Debian
As a Linux user since 1996 or thereabouts I've tried most distributions. I've been a hardcore Gentoo ricer and "I'm using Arch btw..". But these days stability is my main requirement and Debian fills that need perfect.
Debian 12 with GNOME. I'm boring and just want something that works. :)
NetBSD :)
OpenSUSE Tumbleweed
Btw I use arch. Actually Void Linux with bspwm, but I wanted too say it one time. And windows on the gaming machine.
Fedora Workstation. Used to dual boot with Win11 to solely play Genshin Impact, but it randomly became compatible on Linux so I have no reason to go back. Looking at either Fedora Silverblue, or might mess around with NixOS tomorrow.
Desktop: Windows 10
Laptop: MacOS
Mobile: iOS
And I use an iPad for DND character sheets/notes and generally running sessions for my players.
Switched to Linux - Fedora, PopOs, Mint 5-6 years ago, never looked back. But there is 3 months gap, when I built my PC I installed windows on it and used for some time. The worst computing experience I had in last 5 years.
I use ArseLinux btw.
macOS
I'm using Fedora KDE at the moment.
Excellent choice 👌🏻
The same as all my other computers: NixOS.
I am lazy and this way they all run exactly the same config.
I use TUXEDO OS 2 on my new Tuxedo Infinitybook S15. I can tell it's quite good!
Windows. It is the only machine that uses this operating system.
Fedora kinoite/silverblue
Linux - from 2009 (laptop Arch + Sway / PC Endeavour OS and dual boot Kde and Gnome and rooted phone from 2010, from 2022 grapheneos. Privacy, security and freedom is most important for me.
Linux Mint
I use Unraid as my host OS with a Windows 11 gaming vm. If you say at my computer you would never know it's not native. I can shutdown/reboot windows and it doesn't affect any of my home server applications, including a mastodon instance.
This sounds pretty rad. Can you point me to some docs for getting started with this myself?
Edit: I looked up Unraid. It looks like it is a commercial product. Do you pay for it?
If you're interested in the virtualization angle, I can't recommend ProxMox highly enough. It's insanely slick and powerful, and totally open source. It doesn't handle file sharing well natively, but you can easily spin up a file server VM. It can also do GPU passthrough, though it does require a little bit of fanangling in the terminal.
Linux Mint Cinnamon, it just works without any extra faffing about. Been using it for my course for nearly 2 years without any problems!
NixOS ftw! xD
Debian 12 with KDE Plasma, works perfectly on every system I have thrown at it.
Heh, same.
I use Debian 12 on my main pc, and on my laptop I use a OS that is based on Debian
Using Fedora Workstation 38 KDE Spin on both my personal desktop and work laptop, with the ocasional Windows 10 VM for some shenanigans! Has been working great for me!
Arch Linux.
most recently I use Windows 10 in my main desktop
I use older windows as well various Linux for my Virtual Machines guestOS, latter is also for my Steam Deck
macOS for both work and personal use
Has anyone been living on https://vanillaos.org? If so, what's it been like for you? The upcoming 2.0 built on Debian looks very interesting :)
PopOS
I've got 3 main computers because I'm a tech hoarder. Ubuntu MATE, Linux Mint, and Pop!_OS with XFCE. I've also got a little craptop for distro hopping, currently it's got Debian 12. My work provided a Windows laptop but I only have to bring it to meetings.
Mint Cinnamon On my gaming PC windows 10 on my decal printer/cutter machine and Zorin Lite on my old laptop
Gentoo
Windows.. for gaming on my desktop and Photoshop on my laptop.. I know there's alternatives, but not without compromise
Gentoo
Windows 11 on my desktop to game on and Ubuntu (Prefer Linux Mint though) on my laptop as a self-hosted server.
Arch Linux. I also dual boot Windows 10 but 99% of my uptime is on Arch.
Opensuse Leap. No worries.
How do you handle python. The default is 3.6 if I remember correctly, but if you upgrade to 3.11 your firewall breaks.
Main desktop is Windows 10, Asus ROG Ally is Windows 11, and my phone is a Google Pixel 7 Pro, so Android. But I've definitely gone through tinkering around with different Linux distro phases over the last 20+ years!
macOS HighSierra
I have always been an avid Mac user, so currently Ventura. That said, I did build a frankenbox when I wasn’t sure what would happen with gaming on my Mac (I don’t have major requirements, quite content with my little corner of MMORPG and the occasion Steam games), and that has Windows 11.
I have worked cross-platform for many years, and frankly I liked the version of Windows where the window art was translucent? Was that Windows 7? I liked that. I really did not like when Microsoft made their OS look like their phone (and yes I am cranky Apple made their desktop OS look similar to their phone).
I have not dabbled in Linux, but that is mostly because I am that most dangerous of users: the one who has partial knowledge and too much curiosity. I’m the person who thought you could upgrade Windows by simply replacing the io subsystem on a desktop with the one from more recent version on a laptop (back in that day, you could take the new system folder off a Mac and put it on a Mac with an oiler version and it would upgrade). It took 2 weeks to rebuild that PC, the entire machine needed to be wiped clean, we had to dig up the install floppies to get the CD to work to be able to use the system CDs to install a fresh copy of the OS. I am a menace to technology. ;-)
Windows 11 on my main Desktop, mainly because anti cheat. Debian on my Raspberry Pi. And SteamOS obviously on my Steam Deck.
Windows 10 unfortunately. Will go back to Linux some day but I can't be bothered at the moment.
OpenSuse Tumbleweed
EndeavourOS, it's based on Arch Linux.
Alpine Linux on most of my servers, if want something else for some reason Ubuntu.
I used to have strong opinions about operating systems. Installed various Linux builds and boot loaders to run different OS's. Etc
Now I use windows. I can't even tell you what version without looking. 10 I guess? Windows finally "just works" and I haven't had a BSOD in forever so I really don't care.
macOS.
MacOS.
Prefer Linux but I like the Apple hardware so I’m giving it a try.
On my Laptop, Arch Linux On my desktop, FreeBSD
Linux mint
Linux. Got fed up with the Windows 11 release.
Windows 10, even despite me being a software developer. It's just more convenient than to bother with Linux, and Android Studio works on Windows just fine
Plus you've got WSL2 if you need Linux. Much more convenient than dual-booting.
I feel like I'm commenting about WSL2 a lot in this thread. I'ma stop now.
Windows and WSL with Ubuntu.
Windows 10
Debian
Linux Mint with KDE Plasma.
Manjaro Linux, also for my gaming. Booted up my secondary Windows drive yesterday on my main computer, just to update it.
Windows 11. I don't especially like Windows 11 but dev and gaming is pretty great on Windows. Visual Studio is pretty important for me too.
Linux Mint 21.2. it's a solid OS and supports all the games I like to play. I started and ran a business on it as well, so I have no neee for windows anymore besides proprietary software and hardware. I just dual boot in those cases.
Windows 10 + linux mint dual booted on my desktop which is my current main, but I have windows 11 on my laptop that will become my main computer because college. Unfortunately windows 11 is required, i dont even know if stuff like solidworks that i will have to use would run on linux. I am also just more used to windows in general
I've been using windows for years now and I don't think I'll ever switch to another OS, Linux or otherwise.
NixOS (Linux)
As a dev, the nix-shell environments are very useful as I don't have to fully install every package to use it. My system configuration is also represented in a single, declarative file which is a dream. I can copy the config to a new system, run nixos-rebuild and my entire system configuration is on the new system.
Xubuntu on the desktop, Fedora on the laptop
I use a heavily stripped down version of Windows 10. I plan to move to FedoraKDE when 10 is sunsetted though
my work computer is a mac, my desktop runs arch linux (btw). It dual boots windows 10 but I haven’t used it in months, even then it was just because I had a thought I hadn’t updated it in a while. I can boot the windows partition in virtualbox in linux if needed.
Dual boot NixOS for productivity and Windows for games. I do also have a macbook that I rarely use.
Nobara linux on my media center/gaming PC. The same on my laptop currently, but I'm a habitual distro-hopper, so I may be on NixOS or Vanilla or maybe Void next week. Whichever I happen to be on, there's a 90% chance I'll be using the Gnome DE.
I just squeezed a bit more performance out of my old gaming laptop by installing Nobara!
Then I liked it and the performance so much I put it on this older 2014 laptop I snagged out of a recycle pile, it's good as new and capable of gaming older titles from the turn of the millennium which I have a lot of.
So far I'm really happy with Nobara.
fedora
Windows 10 primarily due to work requirements. I have a laptop with Xubuntu for personal use.
NixOS!
Windows on pc, macos on mac. But some period in the every year i have to install bunch of linux as a distrohopper.
FreeBSD 13 and Fedora KDE spin.
xubuntu cuz im too lazy rn to configure anything else than vim
Debian 12 with Gnome desktop
Windows 11 on the main desktop for gaming reasons. Currently Pop_OS on the laptop, considering moving to Arch. My servers all run Debian or Ubuntu.
Debian 12
Artix Linux btw^2
Popos on my personal laptop and Debian on my workstation at the office.
Whenever someone types PopOS as Popos, I can't help but read it as Poopoos
Linux, baby!
Been using Garuda Libux (Kde plasma)distro based on arch family and have loved it so far. Also has some cool gaming emulators, compatibility layers options too
Windows 10 but I use WSL for VS code and docker.
I love Linux, 20+ years I’d use, but the desktop experience is inferior to Win/Mac in my opinion. I do hope that changes though.
Windows 10, but I use Arch on my laptop. I'll be switching the desktop over to linux when Win10 stops getting updated.
Windows, until a week ago. Now switched to Mac os (I despised apple for 20 years)
Microsoft hijacking my chrome tabs and opening them in edge on reboot was the last straw. Also, I bought an Xbox series x, and cloud play to my Xbox won't work on their own os. So selling my Xbox too and switched to ps5.
Used to use Linux, but I feel for the tasks I do, Mac os is more maintainable long term
Microsoft hijacking my chrome tabs and opening them in edge on reboot was the last straw
Lol what the hell? That's insane. Never had this happen to me on Windows 10, is this a Windows 11 thing?
Yep.. recently.. I thought it's because I had sync turned on, but, not too sure.. Edge always started with the computer on reboot, and always it hijacked my Chrome sessions. Also, Chrome was definitely my default.
Microsoft had my business, all they had to do was keep edge in the background (I was paying for Xbox Ultimate, etc). But, they got greedy.
One thing that also put me off Linux as a choice as well, is that Apple have better integration of IOS Apps, and windows now has good integration of Android Apps. Even ChromeOS has support for Android Apps. But out of the box, distro's like ubuntu don't seem to yet
Fedora Silverblue
Windows 10 (updates off) Torrent PC is Linux mint Media device is Linux Ubuntu I run on Bugles
I spend most browsing time on my ipad, but my main computer is a mac, where i do serious stuff like emacs and factorio. Work stuff not mentioned.
Dual/Triple boot with Fedora/Windows 10
Arch Linux (no meme)
I use Arch BTW (w KDE Plasma)
Ubuntu, it has a great community and works well. I don't need more
EndeavourOS with KDE Plasma. Plus Tiny11 in a WM whem I need to run some Windows programs that don't work with Wine.
Pop! OS
arch Linux obviously because I'm a fucking genius ass hipster underwear fruitcake
I use Arch with XFCE. I also have a dual boot Manjaro as backup. Also XFCE.
Mxlinux
Fedora 38 and Windows 10 on dual boot, though I mostly just use Fedora.
Arch/KDE on my laptop which is the tinkering machine, Pop!OS and Windows on the desktop that other people use and I'm not allowed to break.
Pop OS for about 5 years. Very, very satisfied with the experience.
macOS for both work and personal (Personal M1 Mini, Work issued MBP).
Windows 11 Pro with WSL2 Ubuntu
PowerShell is my preferred terminal shell on any OS and I've never found a Linux desktop I get along with (don't get me started on the bloated Fisher Price playcenter that is MacOS), so Windows 11 with Ubuntu in WSL is perfect for me.
I am ChromeOS user with Debian linux in terminal.
The funny thing is I am beginning to struggle using the chromebook (Acer 714) for actual work, because of increasing hardware requirements of my everyday software.
I know it is an everlasting road to disappointment, but needed to take it out of my chest.
Gentoo
Kubuntu
Windows 10 - for gaming have tried Linux before but some games I can't play with my buddies so stayed on windows .
MacOs for work.
Home: Windows 11, work OSX. I moved my personal computer to Linux a couple years ago (I've been using Linux since the mid 90s), but game support was an issue. I'll try again soon. Windows is a necessary evil that I'd like not to be necessary.
MacOS - I've got a Macbook Pro that I do all my work and personal stuff on and then I have my Windows 10 PC that I use almost exclusively for gaming.
It's just practically easier for me to work with MacOS.
I do graphical design work.
Debian and FreeBSD
MacOS. Used Archlinux for many years, but nowadays my pc is being used solely for sim racing.
Arch on my laptop and nixos on my server.
Fedora 38
Server has Linux with a Linux VM and a Windows VM. Gaming/WFH workstation has Windows.
Personal: Linux via EndeavourOS 95% of the time. I have Windows installed on a separate drive so that I can play some games that don't do well on Linux.
Professional: MacOS because that's what the company prefers and has built specific tools for.
Windows 10, but I've been considering switching to Linux Manjaro as that's the Linux OS I was recommended. The main things that are stopping me though is that I'm lazy about backing up all my files, and I don't want to redownload a million different things.
I stuck with Windows 7 far longer than I should've. Windows 10 just rubbed me wrong with all the unrequested changes every feature update and privacy issues.
Then I found Windows 10 LTSC and I'm not going back.
Same! Finally wiped it and installed arch only like 6 months ago.. yikes.
Gentoo on my desktop, and Fedora on my laptop.
How is battery life with fedora?
I don't really have anything to compare it with since I have solely used Linux for years now. I guess I get maybe 4-5 hours on it during light web reading usage. Diablo 2 remastered brings it down to about 2 hours. In just doing the defaults, no tweaking of any power settings.
I used manjaro for quite some time but the aur packages being out of date caused some major issues so I switched to archlinux. I've been happy with it and have been using it for about a year now.
Somewhat long form of "I use arch, BTW"
Solus Linux with the Budgie Desktop
How is it? I've wanted to give it a try.
It’s fantastic! It’s worth it for Budgie alone. There are some minor comforts I miss from large distros like Debian, but very rarely does it ever prove to be a problem I can’t get around.
I’ve had a few applications I wanted to use where it was only distributed for Ubuntu and/or Fedora, so I’m stuck either compiling from source or figuring out an alternative, but it’s only happened a few times. Everything else about it is very straightforward and I’d compare the ease of use to a very small step above Ubuntu.
Budgie isn’t a fraction as customizable as KDE is, but out of the box it’s very visually appealing so as long as you like the way it looks in screenshots it shouldn’t bother you.
Windows 10. No idea why anyone is using Win11.
I've tried Linux every few years for the last few decades and it's never been at a point where I can switch. I am in the process of trying again, however.
Started today trying to dual boot it on a Windows laptop that has a boot SSD and data HDD. Tried resizing the HDD and installing Nobara and can't get the machine to boot into Grub (the suggested fix on their site didn't work, possibly because of the two physical drives). Searching for a solution was fruitless and I'm honestly over it already. I want an OS, not a hobby.
The very definition of insanity right here. There is ALWAYS something that doesn't work and I'm not a fucking idiot but I'm not a developer either. Linux fans act like people on Windows have no excuse not to switch but I've been trying since the 90s and Linux just does everything it can to frustrate me. God knows how someone who's not tech savvy is supposed to figure anything out. /rant
Never heard of the distro you mentioned. Most people just beginning with Linux are recommended to start on Linux mint or pop_OS. If you want to be able to experience Linux for the average user I would recommend one of these.
I’ve used Debian Linux as my primary home desktop since 2005 and at work since 2008. I’ve never had a job that required a Windows machine and at this point it’s a deal breaker for me.
I specifically use Debian stable. In my first decade of using Linux I wanted the bleeding edge, cool stuff, but for me nothing interesting has happened to my machine since 2015.
Debian is rock solid. Turning it to be the best laptop-server I've run so far.
I still use Windows 11 for gaming though :(. Just can't be bothered with the minor annoyances Linux can often cause. I'm glad it's getting better though
Fedora Workstation. Everything just works out of the box, even AAC codec with Bose headphone.
Unfortunately Windows. I want to switch to Linux, I really want it, but it's my first PC game since like 20 years and even if the latest progress are great It's not there yet for me.
Win 10 but I'm craving to install mint/endeavour.
Linux Mint
I daily drove Linux for 15 years. OSX for about five, and now windows since WSL.
It's easier to get the Linux stuff I like in Windows than it is to get the window stuff I like in Linux. WSL provides me all the tools I need to manage my Linux servers in a reasonably performant package.
Wsl is awesome. I love it in on my work windows computer
Windows 11 and iOS. I could probably figure out what I’m doing on Linux but don’t have the energy to bother. I have used a bunch of the debloter scripts to get rid of Microsoft’s garbage.
Linux Mint with Cinnamon and XFCE. I also own a Mac (actually its my company computer), but i keep it for Power Point and Microsoft Office. My company is ok for me to work with my personal Linux computer, as long as i show them proof it's encrypted. Nice guys.
Windows 10 IoT LTSC, without Windows Store and other WPA bloat.
Strange that nobody else commented this
NixOS. I distrohopped for years but now I've landed and it has been several years since I felt any urge to explore alternatives (maybe with the exception of Guix, which is basically the same idea but everything is in Guile Scheme (Lisp)).
I'm never going back to a mutable OS if I can help it.
I envy you, I've tried to use NixOS but it's genuinely hard, especially the configuration language
It is! I'm very glad I stuck with it though. It really pays off.
Win10 so I can play heavily modded skyrim
Fedora Workstation
Your mom's.
Peppermint OS , perfect for just working , and customise. But with the rise of asahi Linux my next computer will be a Mac. I also have a Windows AME install I'm not using just in case I need it. For phones , graphene OS . The best there is.
